Wow, not liking to swear and drink makes you a child apparently. Harvest Moon is a fun franchise though, so thanks for the memories.
I don't think it's that....it's just when a game has a rating of M or similar, and tells you upfront "strong language" is included, it's a pretty good bet the main character is going to be one of the ones using such language. It's a bit disingenuous to expect otherwise.

Come on, guys. Let's not fight over things you never had any sort of control over it. It's time to celebrate the arrival of space nipples, butts and whatnot.
Bioware pls.

In genres other than RPGs, sure. Though even then there are plenty of games rated for things like that where the protagonist doesn't, for example the Halo franchise is rated for language yet John never swears. In RPGs, our character should be our character, including whether they participate or abstain from the behaviors the game is rated for.

man I love Harvest Moon. I have friends of mineral town, animal parade, island of happiness, tale of two towns.. it's a cute, nice, swear-free franchise where you can RP in safe-for-all-ages serenity. maybe you should pick it up again.

Wow, not liking to swear and drink makes you a child apparently. Harvest Moon is a fun franchise though, so thanks for the memories. No... it doesn't. The ratings system, however, is a warning to you of the content in the game. The video game ratings are issued to all video games equally. They don't consider an RPG to be any different than the shooter in that regard... so, if the warning is on the box, you should absolutely expect your PC to be doing those things. All this said, though, I will say now I think the ESRB missed something when rating the Mass Effect games. There are indeed no mentions of "Use of Alcohol" in the ratings label on the box. What you're crying about is the same old "player agency' gripe that people keep putting up here. Player's are always going to be somewhat limited in a cinematic, voice acted game. If you want to play total player agency RPGs, you'll have to resort to playing only ones that are not cinematic and are not voice acted. Otherwise, read the labels and be forewarned.

that is a limitation of the medium. Might have to deal with it... No it isn't, considering RPGs have allowed you to do that before. but you will never be able to say EXACTLY what you want and/or do what you want thus de facto limiting your control on the character. This is an M rated game and that will reflect to various degrees on Sarah and Scott. It is going to happen and you might have to deal with it. Failing that play a tabletop game and make a character that is basically from Pleasantville

Nah... romances will be another Cassandra whitewash one. The nudity there wasn't worth my time. Neither will the ME:A. Now, a rating of MA 18+.../ there I'd be loking for the meat. I wonder if any romanceable char goes for poetry?

They forced Shepard to drink alcohol What scene was that? I can only think of romance scenes, both with Kaidan (at Apollo's and in Shepard's cabin). And probably the Citadel DLC. Other than that, I think it's all optional and there's no requirement to play a DLC or romance Kaidan.

I really wouldn't expect anything more severe than DA:I. They found a good balance there, in my opinion. Only difference may be the volume.

What's the big deal about this though? people tend to swear and many people drink. If they forced shepard to do red sand then I would have been irked Many people do sure, but I don't. And I'd like my characters to be able to abstain as well. Many people have differences of opinions. Also I don't drink due to an event that happened when I was quite young and lets just say makes me rather get sick to remember. I will put the event below if you want to know. Fair warning though you may want to not read if you get sick to your stomach easy: When I was about 6 years of age my family went to visit an uncle who drank heavily when depressed. Bad thing is he just got even more depressed when he drank by a factor of 10. Doctors told him not to drink but he did anyways. Anyway we came for a visit and unbeknownst to us his life had basically fallen apart that very day: Wife filed for divorce, lost his job, house reprocessed, his car towed-away and some other things I will not say. Anyway this all happened to him one right after another the last being the car all culminating about an hour before our arrival. When we got there we could tell something was wrong. We tried to cheer him up but to no avail. He then excused himself and said he had to go do something. ******************************************************** There is not history of what happened next anywhere in my family-line. ******************************************************** And while my family was distracted by the arrival of a van/truck/semi. I surmised when it arrived that it was some sort of moving van/truck/semi -that I now surmise was sent to take the house hold belongings. As my family was distracted and conversing with the people from the truck and the two cars that had just pulled up afterward. I noticed my uncle was not there. So me being six and thinking he should know about his visitors. I went looking for him. Found him in the back bedroom hunched forward as if he were praying. I approached the bed and I remember saying and I quote: "Uncle why is there a moving truck outside?" I was no more than an arms length from him at the time. He said: "It no longer matters." Only then did I see the gun which went quickly in front of his face and out of my line of sight. As I tried to move opening my mouth to say stop. It fired. I put my right hand up to my face... Blood and bits of matter that are supposed to be kept inside the head was there...in my mouth and on my face.
Spent the next 4 years coming to grips with this and finding out that my uncles' blood alcohol level been 10x the legal limit in our state at the time. This event set me against ever drinking even a single drop of alcohol and also pretty much destroyed any sort of emotional spectrum I had. I vowed I would never get scared like I was in that instant and decieded right then and there to never laugh, smile, or have emotion PERIOD. I see someone crying now; all I want to do is slap them and tell them to shut the water works it is only delaying their actual work from getting done. YET thankfully due to social training I can stop myself ahead of time and ask what is wrong first before I judge and respond so harshly.
As to not using ...colorful language. You are not the only one who abstains. What follows may anger those who do use rather... fruitful language. So reading caution is ADVISED: As I previously stated I hate such colored language since it is so POINTLESS, INEFFICIENT and UN-CHALLENGING in society as a whole.
Is it not simpler to just say what you have to say and not be so long winded putting vulgarities in at every turn? Why speak with language that if too much is said the conversation may actually cause the original sentence to loose all meaning? Or in a job could get you fired if you spoke one to a client or even to your boss or maybe dangerous if said to a member of the clergy or church? To me such language is just too inefficient, too unchecked, too dangerous and can loose the meaning the original sentence had to be used effectively.
Example: *Expletive* *Expletive* *Expletive* *Expletive* *Expletive* Good *Expletive* *Expletive* *Expletive* *Expletive* Morning *Expletive* *Expletive*
Instead of: Good Morning.
I mean SERIOUSLY? Only 2/13th's of that sentence is really needed. YES. I KNOW SOMEONE WHO SAYS THAT EVERY SINGLE DAY.
Now I understand people use it for such reasons as anger, emotion, pain, or maybe even sometimes to fit in. Nevertheless since I have a very high tolerance to physical pain, never get truly angry, could care less about fitting in and don't really see the need for nor have much emotion (read spoiler -if don't understand) I see no point in said language. Furthermore if I was in A LOT of pain I am sure a hit to the back of the head or whiff of chloroform would work just as well.
Also I do like challenges and while some may say it is stupid -I like the challenge of slamming my hand in a door and only saying: "Ouch" instead of some long contrived ill used paragraph of a sentences full of expletives. Furthermore colorful language to me is pointless when I can get the same effect being naturally as harsh as I am (for the sake of the forums I will abstain how harsh I could go). Have you never sworn or cursed when you have stubbed your toe or suffered from a great amount of physica/ mental anguish? No, I have not. Furthermore, that is not a good comparison since that's not the only times Shepard does it. No. Never Swore myself. Actually that is one time I laughed.
Very true.

By the way, speaking of 'adult' themes, is there anything in game 'romances' that explores themes beyond adolescent flirtation with softcore dressing? I have in mind simple themes like unrequited love, people using one another, abusive relationships, etc.

I just went to the Australian Classification Board's official website to check out all this fuzz(I'm not Australian by the way so it actually have me interested). The board's consumer advises and ratings are seriously all over the places. Let use a few examples of 'equivalent caliber' to get things in perspective: -Witcher 1 Rated: MA15+, CA: Strong violence, sex scene and drug references(it's blurred and a card pops up instead, does that count as a scene?) -Witcher 2 Rated: MA15+, CA: Strong violence, sex scenes, nudity and coarse language(that's fair) -Witcher 3 Rated: R18+, CA: High impact violence and sex(nudity is not mentioned at all? WTF?! Ok fine it's in the table if you click the specific page) -DAI Rated: MA15+, CA: Strong fantasy violence and sexual references, Online interactivity(again no nudity is mentioned) -Gods of War 3 Rated: MA15+, CA: Strong violence, sexual references and nudity(this one is being honest at least) -Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy Rated: MA15+, CA: Strong violence, Strong sex scene(no mention of nudity once more, what a surprise) -Heavy Rain Rated: MA15+, CA: Strong violence, themes and sex scene(nudity...hmm...) -MGS5: The Phantom Pain Rated: R18+, CA: High impact themes and violence, online interactivity(basically one over revealing outfit, but loads of shooting/stabbing and explosions) Ok, so I'm not too sure why there isn't a breakdown table for every game, having the two R18+ rated games I listed have them yet somehow MEA got its own one. Anyway, from what I've gathered outta this is that the rating MA15+ leaves quite a lot of discretion to the consumers themselves. So yea I expect things to be DAI level at most and certainly not Witcher 2/3 tier of craziness.

Well, and the waking scene. Of course, it's kind'a ambiguous who left all of those beer bottles at your bedside. Your lover or you. Or both. Or it was the people who watched... There I said it. But wouldn't that actually make the game rated more mature? Better stick to "lover or both". In my first Citadel DLC run my Shep woke up with Jack, so I thought the bottles are because of her and felt its a nice touch. Later I figured the bottles are there regardless who is the LI. Would have been fun for example if instead of bottles you see emergency induction ports with Tali.

What do you mean? Force to have sex? Or do you mean having nudity being thrown in your face? I cannot recall anything like that happening before. I was referring more to the other things, like language, drugs, and nudity. I know the sex scenes are optional. Ah, I bet you just loved Jack. The swearing machine who basically walked around half nude.
