the entire citadel dlc is optional, meeting miranda and ashley at the bar is optional, you can meet ashley and not drink right? you can have a quiet not crazy party.. I'm not buying this forced to drink alcohol thing.

I feel like those scenes in the citadel dlc were probably optional. Not unless you skip the entire DLC. What he's prolly referring to is like the Ashley scene where you meet her at the bar, and the two of you are sitting there downing shots. But all of those shots are paragon interrupts (I believe) and they are not forcing any of them on you. Nope, wasn't referring to that one since you can abstain from Ashley's challenge by not taking the Renegade interrupts. Now Kaidan's scene has you drink. I feel like those scenes in the citadel dlc were probably optional. The only one I can think of is the meet up with Miranda, but who's to say Shep fixed herself an alcoholic drink? During the party it's mentioned by multiple people that Shepard ISN'T drinking. The time you interact with Miranda at the casino has you both drink what is explicitly stated to be wine.

Well, and the waking scene. Of course, it's kind'a ambiguous who left all of those beer bottles at your bedside. Your lover or you. Or both. Unless you don't have a lover or if you couldn't invite them to the party.

Your first point here is simply not true... you can skip individual meetups and still invite those characters to your party. I've done it that way many, many times.

you can skip the individual meetings..optional.
Kaidan can be dead... optional.
you can choose to have a lover... optional.
Shepard takes the glass of what is stated to be wine from the waiter but if we're gonna be pedantic (and we are being pedantic) the drinking is inferred not actually physically shown. besides.. optional meeting. in an optional dlc.

The empty bottles are there, but the connection to your Shepard actually taking those drinks is still something your applying mentally to the situation.

You know I never thought that all those 'beer bottles/ cans' actually belonged to my Shepard. It was a...maybe...raucuous party. Someone else drunk in the bedroom, which was not closed off up until you went to sleep with your sig other...and even then considering Javick got in. Heck we are not even sure those 'beer bottles' are even alcholic. They could be rootbeer or lemonade.

... and the game is rated in a manner that accounts for the language and alcohol use... so, anyone who truly objects to it completely can avoid purchasing the game. That's why the rating system exists. So because the game has that kind of stuff, players should just accept that being forced on their characters? Kind of defeats the purpose of a role-playing game if you can't, you know, role-play how you want.

we see Tali drunk on the other bed in the apartment at one point during the Crazy party afaik. some of the other partygoers also get pretty wasted. who knows who crashed where and when tbh. wasn't Grunt squatting on the floor of the shower at one point crying or something? lmao
the thing is Hanako, it evidently isn't forced on you, because we've outlined how all those instances seem to be optional or avoidable no? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If you want to be absolutely free of adult references in an RPG, buy only RPGs that are rated "for Everyone" The rating system basically says you are going to be exposed to those things IF you buy that game. Doesn't matter if it's an RPG or a Shooter.

That's why the rating system exists. So because the game has that kind of stuff, players should just accept that being forced on their characters? Kind of defeats the purpose of a role-playing game if you can't, you know, role-play how you want. I was actually listening to a fascinating interview by Patrick Weekes...yesterday...and I am glad I got a chance to use it today. But, during it, he was talking about writing the Tali scene where you invite her up to the cabin verses any of the stuff which happens on Rannoch. Wheras he wrote that Shepard and Tali had to have a friendly conversation more or less because you invited her up to your cabin. Thus you would have to care about the person in question. You would have to be friendly with her to ask her up. If you did not care about her, at least in some way, or weren't somewhat of a friend with her, you would not invite her up. Whereas the Tali scenes in Rannoch, since you had to take her along...to advance the plot in the game...he wrote those scenes differently and with a mind where someone might have Tali on the squad who did not care about her or even like her. As far as the Role Playing is concerned it is relatively easy to role play around this sort of thing. Head canon your Shepard does not actually drink. Head Canon it is a non alcholic beverage. If its that big of a deal to you in some of these scenes that are being discussed work arounds are possible, and without doing huge mental gymanstics.

Doesn't matter if it's an RPG or a Shooter. Being exposed to things in game =/= your character doing those things in game. There is no special distinction in the system for an RPG. The ratings board considers a shooter to be as "interactive" a media as an "RPG." If it's "M" that means your character may be doing "M" things as listed on the box. Should you expect to be able to role play Shepard as a pacifist and just not have to shoot anyone in the game? No... violence is listed on the box, so you should expect that your character may engage in violence during the game. ETA: You just don't expect to be able to have your character totaly abstain from the violence just because it's an RPG... so why should you expect to be able to have your PC totally abstain from the other warnings listed on the box... just because it's an RPG? That they made it such that you can optionally get around most of the drinking references and a lot of the swearing is to Bioware's credit. It's certainly not an obligation for them to do so.

The only time Shepard is forced to drink in the Citadel dlc is with Joker at the beginning. Shepard takes 2 sips of whatever drink. The rest is optional. Most of the time when I play the dlc, I stop after the gameplay part, ignore the party and meetups to finish my playthrough.

Wow, not liking to swear and drink makes you a child apparently. Harvest Moon is a fun franchise though, so thanks for the memories.
