Ok, @lee80 , aside from you being an alien lover, it does seem like you're right. Reyes? Criminal scum. Gil? Comes with Jill. Jaal seems free of attachment and those love scenes I've never seen look very nice. I am Angara trash, but honestly, I wasn't all that into any of the aliens in the Original trilogy aside from the Drell. Yeah. Jaal is the only reason I can enjoy Andromeda. Before him it felt like my options were bad or worse. Kaidan was so far away, and there's no way Reyes or Gil were taking his spot. Oh lord, this! I've noticed that there's an obnoxious lack of content with romance options. The pacing is so odd that I'm left having to carefully script which scenes to save and what dialogue to pick. Gil doesn't have enough to make up for him not being a combat squadmate and Reyes has a very short amount of interaction. Jaal definitely should have stayed bi after all that. Maybe it's just me. The original trilogy wasn't as detailed as some of the cutscenes we see here. And yet, I feel starved for more conversations with the crew regardless if I'm romancing them.

After playing Red Dead Redemption 2 I found that the bonding scenes are something BW could take note of for future ME games. Romances and friendships always feel sort of rushed or awkward, but in RDR2 I felt like I was actually bonding with everyone in a natural way. I think games need to stop being rushed out to meet deadlines because what makes games great to us fans are usually the things that get cut for time, and added back after outrage or we pay for DLC to give us what we should have had from the start.

Andromeda is the same, giving off a very rushed feel with the glitches and bugs and it makes me more than a little salty that it looks like it got thrown under the bus for Anthem. Maybe that's just me. But the RPG world Bioware excelled at was losing ground and it makes me sad to think a time may come when I may have to look elsewhere for games that focus on character development but also player customization.

Yeah I've started to fee that way with both BW games and Bethesda games. The new Dragon Age game will give me an idea of where BW might head with a future ME game, but after the MEA fiasco, I would hope BW understands that we would wait 8 years if it meant getting an amazing, deeply emotional game with compelling characters and an incredible story. I know MEA could have been something special if they had more time. I still want to play as Ryder and still continue solving the secrets of Heleus, because they came up with some pretty amazing things with the Angara, and Jaal could play an even bigger role in the next one too. There's a lot of mystery surrounding him. At least I got those vibes in certain cutscenes on occasion.

There was a knot of worry when finding out that the angara might be programmed as sleeper agents . If that's the case, tension between Ryder and Jaal may come up. On a side thought: I really, really liked that Jaal would not let Ryder off the hook if they did something that angered him. He'd get past it eventually, but it was nice to see that if you didn't pay attention to his wishes, he wasn't going to just up and forget about it. It reminded me of how heated things could get when I played a Shepard who romanced Garrus but disagreed with him on methods.

I don't like it when I can control and change a companion's feelings by using words or doing them a favor and then walk all over them and they still follow me loyally. With Jaal you have 2 chances to blow it and if you do, you get the forced friendship scene instead of the romance, even if you flirt with him. I also liked that Drack never lets you forget if you don't save his people. Thane was my first romance, but when I romanced Garrus, I remember when I kept telling him to not kill Sidonis, he put up a fight with me about it instead of letting me easily talk him down. I had to trust he would not blow my head off by choosing to shield the turian. I'd like more moments like that in the next game. Having a tough choice with Jaal and his family or people would really make things interesting!

Having a tough choice with Jaal and his family or people would really make things interesting! To be fair, the other Andromeda companions are fairly independent as well so I won't say that you can't anger them as well. Another thing that reminds me a bit of the Garrus romance was how Jaal cannot be flirted with right away and that a friendship has to be built first. It doesn't take an entire game, but it does require a bond which appeals to the demisexual in me. That's pretty neat to hear that angering Jaal twice can ruin any chances of a romance. I like that. It really forces the player to pay attention in that case and it's not arbitrary. By the way, have you noticed how nearly every romance in the original trilogy involved a male LI talking about a past lady they cared about? Think about it: Kaidan: Rana, Garrus: turian scout, Thane: Irikah, Jacob: Miranda, Jaal: Anallia, Reyes: mercenary ex you actually shoot. Only Liam doesn't have any past flames or flings to talk about!

Yeah if you don't save the Angara and you shoot Akksul, you are forced into the friendship scene. Also if you romance anyone else and lock them in, you also force the friendship scene. So many people locked in Reyes because he wasn't a fling like they thought and then Jaal never made a move. I have noticed. I mean seriously? Let's come up with a new story! Bethesda even did it with MacCready in Fallout 4, who is a LI to the Sole Survivor. Liam is too precious! He's more like a brother to me, but he has a sweet romance that makes me smile! Jaal not only has a former LI, but he also liked Avela and Garrus liked Tali. I think only Kaidan and Thane never had eyes for anyone else but Shepard.

I think only Kaidan and Thane never had eyes for anyone else but Shepard. Ha! Drack, I get why he'd be angry. I'm amazed he got over that at all. It was something I kept expecting to have a further discussion about but then Drack reminds me he's lived beyond the rise and fall of the Roman empire, countless wars, and who knows how many governments enacted to be just too tired to grudge over something he's seen time and time again. I have to admit; Reyes has a surprising amount of versatility with different personalities of Ryder. There was a push/pull chemistry between him and I can see how people got stuck as it almost happened with one of my Ryders. She was a professional type who wasn't much charmed by the flirting but did surprise him by defending him as a good guy. 2 flirts. That's all it took for the story to tag it as a potential romance. And those "flirts" weren't even hitting on him. They genuinely fit her better in telling him that there's better things to worry about than money and that he's a better person than his ex said he was. In a way though, it added flavor to the whole thing in how Kadara ended and her ensuing disappointment before she fell for Jaal. Still, would have been interesting to see LIs call you out for being too "friendly" with others and being wary of being messed with emotionally. The casual sex aspect with Peebee was a nice touch, but I'd like to see the other end too with certain characters. Oi. As for the original trilogy, got to admit I was starting to wonder if Femshep was so unattractive if it felt like she had to drag guys into a relationship with her. Thane's had a dignity to it and Kaidan had a natural attraction that worked for story flow.

He made things dramatic and I always headcanon Jaal disliking being on Kadara because of Reyes hitting on Ryder all the time! That's actually a pretty common fanfic I see too. Jaal and Ryder can't admit their feelings, Ryder goes to Kadara and meets Reyes who charms them, and then the romantic drama with Ryder, Jaal and Reyes happens with Jaal usually winning! I kind of wish that could have been a slight thing in the game too, with a Jaal we flirt with but don't actually commit to yet, who gets jealous around Reyes who knows how he feels and makes it worse intentionally, but means no real harm. Actually if you flirt with Liam and then romance Jaal, Liam mentions it if I recall correctly. You can also tell Peebee to leave Jaal alone. Oh yeah! Those two love to flirt and seem to have a thing too. I bet if we didn't romance Jaal, he and PeeBee might have had a thing by the next game. Jacob comes to mind. Oh my God if my Ryder had done that against my wishes, I would have forced her to jump off the Tempest!

Do you think Jaal would have had a difficult time admitting romantic feelings for Sara? He never struck me as having a hard time declaring that out loud though I always do like references to one's decisions. Makes me wish the wiki had kept up with the squad banter too because I'd have loved to see all the possible outcomes. And yes, I will admit to being slightly jealous that Peebee and Cora got Jaal's admiration and interest so quickly. It's not like he was in a relationship though. But still...it's the same sort of irksomeness as when Ryder never gets any mention of having biotic ability. Now I wonder if romancing Jaal would be harder if we had to flirt with him like Shepard did with Jacob.

Probably why if you lock in a romance with another, you never know of his feelings. I think there was more planned, but a lot got cut out. It could depend on his relationship with Ryder. I couldn't see him accepting advances if Ryder was disrespecting his people.

There are basically 3 complete romances in the game: Peebee, Jaal, and Cora. Everyone else is mini-romances. it's really uneven. I hope we don't see that again. If they don't have the budget (either time, money, workers, whatever) they should cut back on the number of options (2 for every origination configuration perhaps) instead of bragging about having 10 options ( most of the options for straight men). As for Jaal though yeah, I think he is their best attempt so far at a realistic feeling relationship. You have to earn his trust, then you become friends, and then the flirting-it all flows so well!

Probably why if you lock in a romance with another, you never know of his feelings. I think there was more planned, but a lot got cut out. It could depend on his relationship with Ryder. I couldn't see him accepting advances if Ryder was disrespecting his people. *Sigh* Do you think they'll someday come back to Andromeda or is it dead for good? Seems a waste to go back now.

I'm curious, do you pick all the friendship and flirt options or just select a few choice ones according to your Ryder's personality? I take all the flirts. I find them all fairly entertaining and sweet.

I think they will. Bioware can address the issues people had with the game without abandoning the setting or even the characters. It's really their only option since the Milky Way is in a far worse state when it comes to continuing the franchise.

What I'm not sure is if they see it as a profitable niche to maintain as an RPG. I hope they don't. What they did well, they do very well.

I don't think Bioware will ever stop making RPGs in the foreseeable future. Every RPG they have made, even those that received backlash, have made a profit. Also, Bioware is pretty much EA's only RPG developer as far as I know so they would support them for those two reasons among others.

There were many who wanted a DLC and they know they owe that to the fans, but since we won't likely get one, a continuation in Andromeda with Ryder would likely be the next best way to fix things.

Jaal is definitely a breath of fresh air and someone I plan to revisit after I face the one I "dread"

I'm romancing Tekehu right now (OMGEE DUDE NO KIDDING I DIDNT NOTICE?! xD) and I find a lot of Jaal in him in the sense that he's open about his romantic feelings. Teke fits the trope promiscuous bisexual not gonna lie there but after of all that -2 meters- wall of blue scales there is a man with a lot of insecurities, he seems to shield himself with this conceited personality to be strong, it's the man behind the facade who reminds to Jaal.
what has this to do with anything? well I guess I miss this stupid cute catman from outer space. I wish I could have more time to do a Jaalmancer run again but I gotta do a lot of gaming x-x so so slow
