They were never squids or cats. I think we all got a bit too literal with the comparisons. They just have features that reminded people of those things, and they still do. Especially Jaal

I hadn't properly looked at the females before (too focused on Jaal)... and I do not like their look. They actually kinda remind me of those weirdly deformed fish from Shark Tale.

Golly. Cats, squids, snakes and rabbits. These guys are seriously all over the place. I personally see more snake/squid; those tentacles look more like a cobra's cowl to me, and really just the general head shape, but I do do see feline-like features in the face itself. Seems to be a pretty popular design choice since turians are kinda kitty-faced as well.

I am a smidge worried that the writers/designers are trying to call back to Garrus with Jaal. Hopefully his characterisation will lay my concerns to rest.

Well they were partially inspired by avian features when designing the turians, and bats features were the launching off point for the krogan, so feline features could easily have been what they were inspired by, and went in a more different and creative direction, with the resemblance of a feline (the eyes) still there for the angara.

We know next to nothing about Jaal anyway, so its all harmless speculation and pining at this point. 

Everyone looks dull there compared to Jaal.  Was that on purpose to highlight him or is he special somehow so is colored different?

Maybe the males are like the peacocks of this species...
