So we know know from the last Andromeda Initiative briefing that Cora Harper is and was Alec Ryder's second in command and was slated to become the new Pathfinder if anything were to happen to Alec.
So why then would one of the very young and untested Ryder twins be placed in the shoes of their father? Is it simply going to have to do with SAM? The briefing says all members of the Pathfinder team have a direct link to SAM. But will being the biological children of Alec give them a stronger link? Or will it be some other reason altogether?
I'd love to hear some speculation.

I would prefer it wasn't through a genetic link although that is entirely possible (Avatar did that ok). We already have the player is inherently special vibe coming through in DAI (where only the player can close the rifts) and many other games. I would simply prefer the players character is thrust into a dangerous situation and then earns the rank on merit.

I'm hoping that at the start some shit will happen and we will step up and be all heroic maybe we will save our sibling,Cora,Liam & our father but he will either get injured or he just steps down and names our Ryder to replace him as Pathfinder and he will stay aboard the Nexus.

I'm assuming Daddy will get other responsibilities given the mutiny that happened while they were dealing with issues and Ryder gets promoted after showing a knack for leading. Could be Cora does lead for a short time but gets them into trouble and Ryder gets them out of it.

Or simply because Bioware kinda wrote themselves in a corner when they had to NOT make The Ryders N7 soldiers to distance themselves from Shepard and whatnot so they came up with this?

Maybe I'm just projecting here but here you go:
**The crew disembarks on the first class M planet they find** DadRyder: This is great, guys. Ha! We're finally in the open, breathing real air and enj...**one of the rock-dinosaur type creatures shows up out of nowhere and bites him in half** Cora **slowly walking backwards into the Nomad**: You'll need massive amount of moral support from the Nexus, young pathfinder. I know it's a terribly demanding job, therefore I nominate myself.
The End

In the beginning Cassandra and the advisers Cullen, Josephine, and Leliana were. After a certain point in the game however we proved ourselves and they make us the Inquisitor. I can see the first arc of the game doing that with Cora being in charge, and then we officially become the Pathfinder.

I can see the first arc of the game doing that with Cora technically in charge, and then we officially become the Pathfinder. I do like this idea. Dad and Cora are in charge. Then Dad goes off and leaves for whatever reason, voluntarily or not. Cora and maybe even some other experienced crew members are running things partly by committee, but Cora is the nominal head. But maybe Cora has her own reasons for not wanting to step up and once she feels the crew would be totally behind Ryder, she puts them forward as the official Pathfinder.

Maybe there is some kind of improvisation in the middle of the Dad crisis. Maybe Cora is not around and we are forced to use our Dad's implant in order to survive the first mission, and then... well, you are technically the Pathfinder because the installation of the SAM implant has been completed.

It could even be a point of contention between Ryder and Cora initially. Something that needs to be worked out. Especially if you decide to romance her you'd need to have to address that scenario at some point.

I think it's probably gonna be one of those things where... for whatever reason, your Ryder gets thrust into the leadership role for a mission and, of course, your Ryder does an amazing job and now everyone is all, "ohhh you so good, you be leader now k?"
lol

I think the most likely reasons will be: a) We prove ourselves in a spectacular fashion at the start. We gain an ability that makes us even more special (akin to anchor hand, prothean vision, etc). c) We have a deeper connection with SAM than the others and that is the key to something Dad left out for us. I do hope is A.

I could be wrong but judging from the trailers and the last briefing, I'd say that Cora and Alec won't be with our Ryder at the start of the game. Something will happen to the Hyperion once in Andromeda and Alec's team (with Cora) will be somewhere else fighting their way against whatever enemy is attacking us. From there, we will lose every contact with them. It could be Alec's team in the first trailer:
This is when our Ryder could be assigned as Pathfinder. We know that the others inside of our Ark will still be asleep, so Ryder is their only option if Cora and Alec are "gone". I guess we will find Cora somewhere in some planet but Alec won't be with her.

We know that the others inside of our Ark will still be asleep, so Ryder is their only option if Cora and Alec are "gone". I guess we will find Cora somewhere in some planet but Alec won't be with her. Yes, I would like that to be true, it'd make more sense. But this raises more questions: Why would Drack already be with Alec? The pathfinder team in the briefing was only human material. (It's not impossible, but unlikely, since we are generally the ones who attract aliens/other species to our teams.) Why would he go to another planet if we all would be investigating Habitat 7? My guess is that this announcement trailer is not meant to be taken into account story-wise. I believe the story trailer released on N7 day is more credible: You see Scott behind Dad Ryder when they are investigating possible Remnant technology, you also see Kett on the planet when he activates an explosive, and when he is about to touch alien technology. So, assuming I can conjecture a plausible beginning of the game based on what was revealed, I would guess (possible spoilers): Arriving in Habitat 7 with the Hyperion Pods malfunction, Cora and our sibling don't accompany us in the first mission. Maybe she (already awake, from the trailer) stays behind to watch over them.
Dad, Liam and you take a shuttle to the surface. Shuttle gets hit, malfunctions, or whatever else that can go wrong and all three get separated. You get up and have to find Dad and Liam. You find Liam first and you both try to find Dad. At this point you're already aware this planet is nothing like what you imagined. It's not habitable.
You find Dad Ryder (or he finds you) and warns you there's some heavily armed aliens on the planet (the Kett with the Archon). They are searching for something.
You battle them and discover you are at a Remnant world and the Kett are after their technology.
You enter one of the vaults and Dad Ryder activates something.
Archon arrives, captures you, Liam and Dad (maybe kills Alec or kidnaps him).
Then something happens (intervention from something or your own badassery at work) and you and Liam get away, get in contact with the ark and return. Then you go to the Nexus to get the Tempest and the story goes on from there.
And maybe because you had firsthand experience with the natives, you are put in charge, not Cora.

Maybe that krogan isn't Drack? The krogan in the first trailer have a different armor. Our first mission is to investigate Habitat 7 but it seems that something goes wrong once we arrive in Andromeda and our Ryder is alone. Maybe all goes wrong once we approach Habitat 7. Alec's team could have landed there and fought against the enemies and for some reason Alec goes idk where to do idk what. But with his team gone, this would explain why we're assigned as Pathfinder. Our Ryder will try to figure out what happened on Habitat 7 and this is where we could find Cora. Alec and the Krogan will be gone and one of our missions could be "Find out what happened to your father". Some of the scenes from the N7 day trailer could be of something later in the game. Once we have already rescued/found Ryder's father. Edit: I didn't see the spoiler tag Your story makes sense but here's hoping that they don't kill Alec so soon.

If new trailer is to believed it is possible that Alec is captured by enemy at start and muddles his brain into goo or at the least drives him insane. While SAM can communicate with all team members via implants... He is connected to Alec Ryder by other means maybe through a second implant or a part of the same implant that is not in the others implants... Otherwise then everyone could do the detecting and problem solving they say in the trailer is unique to Ryder alone.
Another possibility: Cora steps up and says she will take the mantle after whatever happens to A.R. SAM however doesn't care for her and prefers to be joined with one of Ryder twins.

I firmly believe Alec Ryder is not dead from the outset like many are predicting: there's too much proof given from the trailers to support otherwise. Cora being next in line is the cool speculative angle, I'm thinking she's with Alec for the time that a new Pathfinder has to be assigned, missing out on the field appointment: not sure why she wouldn't assume authority once back though....exciting to theorycraft on for sure. Then there's this: Which looks like Alec carrying out guerilla style warfare on The Kett, and this type of offensive tactic suggests to me that's he's angry as hell, something has gone down bigtime and now he's on a rampage - perhaps Cora didn't agree with his tactics and made her way back to the Tempest somehow? Extremely hard to say till we see more (so much fun to think about though!!). Then there's this Remnant Vault access scene, where Alec appears to be with Scott or Liam, but begs the question: when in the story is this? Either way, I'm confident in my own speculative guessing (lol) that Alec survives at least most of the game, and the tired RPG trope of dad dying in the first area is gonski. Rest in peace Teyrn Cousland et al. There is the off chance that the N7 in these clips is actually Scott and that throws all the aforementioned theories out the window...(fucking lol if that's the case), then yeah...out out of ideas brothers n sisters haha. God damn I'm thirsty for more info, can someone generate a mass effect stasis pod for me for 2 months pls? thanks

Actual reason: Because playing as someone in their 50s is still unpalatable to most players.
Game reason: Something bad happens with father + that AI implant plays some role in Pathfinder selection.
