MomRyder divorces her stupid husband after learning he signed up to go to Andromeda. She wasn't happy to hear that her kids were going as well, but realized they were old enough to make their own decisions. She is currently in Hawaii on the beach drinking Pina Colada's being obliterated by the reapers beside her new boy-toy Carlos the Husk.ftfy

My theory. MomRyder died in a way not connected to the trilogy in any way. I think one dev mentioned a mystery behind it, probably a nice little short mission.

SAM = Ellen Ryder. That was kept a secret. Ellen Ryder didn't just help develop SAM, she is SAM. Aided by the illusive man and project overlord technology. She could have been dying from a degenerative condition. SAM also stands for Scott/Saras Actual Mother. Meanwhile, in another universe; Ellen Ryder is Caroline, Alec Ryder is Cave Johnson, SAM is GLaDOS and Sara Ryder is Chell.

My crazy theory is that Ellen Ryder had a terminal illness, and the Ryder family joined the AI partially because it was agreed that Ellen could stay in stasis. The family hopes that amongst the flora and fauna, a cure for her rare condition may be found.
Doubt it will turn out to be true, but it would be WAY cooler than her just being arbitrarily dead. Great sidequest fodder.

I want mom to be estranged from her family. I want her to have protest the idea of building an AI and going to another galaxy (plus some other horrible thing dad did). It would cause so much drama for the twins if they were kept out of the loop and only learned about it after their Dad's death So they went on thinking and believing in a series of events that weren't true.

The sample of the Nexus Uprising book gives some info regarding Ellen's fate. The prologue and first 2 chapters are here, there are spoilers on the launch of the Initiative. Regarding Ellen: "By all accounts, Ryder had been a damn good asset before he'd lost his wife, leaving him on his own to raise two kids and whatever demons he carried over it."
"Lost his wife" seems to indicate that she died, presumably when the twins were pretty young since Alec had to raise them on his own.

The family hopes that amongst the flora and fauna, a cure for her rare condition may be found. Doubt it will turn out to be true, but it would be WAY cooler than her just being arbitrarily dead. Great sidequest fodder. Sort of the ME equivalent of Nora Fries, the wife of Mr Freeze? Perhaps that's why Ellen and Alec began illegally researching AI, as a means to try to find a cure for her condition. An AI after all would be far easily able to process medical data and run simulations far faster than any human doctor could Her health could have taken a turn for the worse, before they were able to get SAM fully operational, forcing her to enter into stasis. Alec responded by throwing himself into his work, which raised suspicion in the Alliance and lead him to get caught.

Ellen is a doctor, from what we saw in the one hour release (you see it on the codex entry).
My guess: Experiment gone wrong.
