This is a question i've asked on several media platforms including reddit, some local fan forums and now here. So far, this question raises my eyebrows the most when I begin thinking about it; Why are the krogan in Andromeda?
It's a simple question that nobody has a great answer on.
We know that only Citadel Council races have an Ark, Humans, Turians, Salarians and Asari. So why are the Krogan with them? The logical explanation would be that they came with the Nexus as part of security. Which is also, the logical explanation and is probably true. But here's this, with the Arks and Nexus, being send out prior to the Genophage cure, how are the krogan supposed to survive in Andromeda when "1 out of 1000 female krogan are fertile"? What motivations would any krogan have of traveling 600 year without the assurance of his people to survive in the long run?
So far i've heard these common answers: They do it for the money/love for fight - So spending 600 years in hibernation just to fight in a different star system is rewarding when they can't really build up a society because it'll fade away in a few thousand years in Andromeda? If Krogan want to fight or have money, they'd have done the same in the Milky Way no problem.
The Salarians will cure it in Andromeda - The Salarians did their outmost best to prevent a genophage cure prior to ME 3 and during ME 3. The Salarians and Turians both agreed that the krogan would be too dangerous if left unchecked. So why would they allow the very race that in general hates the Salarians and Turians for their contribution to the doom of their entire species in the second most expensive and long stretched project and risk jeopardizing it by curing the genophage in Andromeda? Besides, it took 2 scientists that helped improve the genophage to cure it. I doubt they'd send anybody with the arks that was involved with that project out of safety.
The Krogans trade security for a new home - One person went out of his way by saying that the Council brokered a deal with the krogan that they would help with security onboard the nexus and colonies so that in time, a cure would be given or that the krogan cannot exceed a certain population number. And in my opinion makes no sense because no way would a krogan culture start killing their offspring because it would otherwise "exceed the numbers" or limit the amount of children. And this deal would still involve the cure to the genophage, which is something I still think of as stupid and rash and insane in the minds of the council.
So what do you guys think? I honestly don't know why the krogans are in Andromeda specifically, what they were promised and if or the genophage has been cured for them.
Please, help me out on this.

SuperIntended of the Nexus (Nakmor Kesh) is a female krogan, so no. Maybe they bribed her? Also don't estimate the force of nepotism in Krogan culture.

Probably a relatively small contingent of Krogans is the only thing that makes sense. How about: some of the clans simply sold a number of willing mercenaries for a large sum. Or perhaps some of them are just curious.
They wouldn't survive in the long run.

The Genophage doesn't need to be cured for the Krogan to be viable, the lore has been as far as I recall fairly consistent on that. On a peaceful, non-apocalyptic wasteland world they'd grow at a decent rate.
Krogan would also generally have considerably less to lose - most of the citadel races enjoy a notably high standard of living, but the Krogan don't.
I don't find the Krogan being willing to take part particularly surprising or needing explanation. The decision to take them along is more suprising perhaps, given prejudice against the Krogan. Though if the project is mostly human (or Asari) led that might help, since they're generally not as hostile.

So what do you guys think? I honestly don't know why the krogans are in Andromeda specifically, what they were promised and if or the genophage has been cured for them. Please, help me out on this. I think you're woefully underestimating individual motivations on the part of members of those races. Lumping every Krogan or Salarian under a single behavioral umbrella for their species. Krogan coming to Andromeda for the sake of personal adventure seems perfectly plausible to me. The Andromeda Initiative leaves the Milky Way before the events of ME3, before they could see the cure of the genophage. It was already revealed from Wrex that many Krogan had given up on their species and just live lives of mercenary work or adventure. Sure some choose to stay in TMW for that, but why not go to Andromeda? Who knows what's out there to fight? Maybe they just want to do something no other Krogan has ever done. We know from ME3 that they're not as simplistic as we were initially led to believe. They were once capable of great art and culture. They may have the same itch humans do. To just do something because it's there. That would seem to make sense for Drack. He is supposed to be really old. Maybe he is in Andromeda because he wants one last grand adventure. Also, for the Salarians, Mordin and his apprentice's storyline proves that not all Salarians are of the same mind on the entire genophage issue. As for the cure... I mean BioWare could just pull some other way of curing the genophage out of their ass. Maybe some new tech in Andromeda makes it easier? Maybe we don't need anyone who originally worked on it to be involved. Anyway, point is I don't think there is any ONE reason for why the Krogan will be there. They'll all have their own stories. Some want adventure. Some just want the challenge. Some want to kill strange aliens. Some hope they'll find the cure for the genophage. Some just... have no other purpose or direction in life.

I just assumed they recruited the best and brightest, obviously the majority are council species but there must be other species to just because we haven’t seen any drell or quarians it doesn’t mean they are not there. Going back to the reddit leak Drack's loyalty mission is to help him recover a lost Krogan colony ship so maybe a few clans decided to make a go of it in Andromeda perhaps they were clans not aligned with clan urdnot or were exiled by them.

Their numbers were dropping more because they kept on fighting (either each other or as mercs) than Tuchanka being a radioactive hellhole

There are seven Habitat planets as shown in the latest trailer but only four Ark ships. Since it seems that each Ark is assigned to one planet I guess there are three other species travelling on the Nexus (the Krogan being one of them) which are going to be colonizing some of these habitats too.

In ME2, Mordin explains his involvement in the genophage modification project. The krogan were adapting to the genophage, so they needed to modify it to keep it effective. It's possible, too, that conditions on Tuchanka were such that they would naturally evolve toward lesser birthrates, given the harsh conditions on Tuchanka. Fewer individuals would give a greater chance that each of them could survive the harsh conditions.
If those two evolutionary trends were combined, the krogan could end up in a state where all (or most) individuals are fertile, but have much fewer offspring.

I think the answer is: because COOL. I think this, and fan popularity, are the only reasons why the Krogan are going. It makes no in-game sense to take the generally blood thirsty, and grudge-bearing species on a confined trip to a new galaxy with no established supply lines or infrastructure. Say what you will about individual Krogan, it still does't change the fact that even "refined" people like Wrex tend to be psychotically violent to those they disagree with, especially when it comes to the Genophage and the future of the species. Why bring them and not a species like the Quarians, who are perfectly suited for operating out of space craft with limited to no supplies on hand? If you're looking for combat troops, then the other Initiative species are just as capable and far more likely to work together in an organized fashion. Heck, the Rachni, even the "mindless" ones fought on Noveria, would be a better choice for combat forces seeing as how they are fully self sufficient and can survive on a wide variety of planets with no outside help. Plus they would be make for great cannon-fodder, just send them down to a planet, have them disrupt and/or wipe out the locals, and then move in when the sterile drones and soldiers have worn themselves out and have no means of replenishing their numbers. Zero expenditure of resources needed for supplying troops with food and equipment, and no need to have to worry about providing for them afterwards. Win-win.

The chief engineer of the Nexus is a female Krogan. Enough with the lazy stereotypes, people. The kinds of krogan shepard encountered were mostly of the mercenary thugs hired to kill you variety and not the kinds of poetry reading engineers and mechanics, etc. you'll find aboard the Nexus.
Nobody needs a fresh start more than them. If I were Krogan i'd want to get the hell away from all the sterilising, judgemental, ungrateful hypocrites and vengeful, power-hungry warmongers within my own kind as soon as possible. Krogan settlers looking for a better future should be regarded no differently to any other civilian group aboard the Nexus.

I always wondered why they didn't just weaken the genophage to it being far far weaker. Maybe that was the plan. It's an entirely different galaxy so they must figure there will be plenty of resources but there might also be lots and lots of problems with the local population and thus krogans would be needed. Krogan are also extremly resistant to stuff like toxins so could make very good explorer's. And if that isn't a good enough reason I imagine some krogan would want to do it for the excitment

Yes Tuchanka is a mess full of tribal conflict but so is the middle east. Are we banning Muslims from the A.I now because of the odd violent one? Are we making Andromeda Great Again.

But here's this, with the Arks and Nexus, being send out prior to the Genophage cure, how are the krogan supposed to survive in Andromeda when " 1 out of 1000 female krogan are fertile"? What motivations would any krogan have of traveling 600 year without the assurance of his people to survive in the long run? Translation: There are no "fertile" females. Every single one of them is infected (except for Eve due to Maelon's experiments). And the Genophage adjusts their birthrates to pre-industrial levels according to Mordin. So overall, they still have high enough birthrates to maintain stable population size, but due to their violence and lack of breeding they are going extinct. Keep in mind that Krogans can live from anywhere of 1000 to 2000 years. Solution: Stop them from killing each other (and don't raise them on Tuchanka) and enforce a strict breeding program and you can create a stable Krogan population even with the Genophage active. Provided that they brought enough Krogan to build a viable population in the first place. The interesting thing is that the Salarians are the same as the Krogans. If they were to breed like them, their population growth would be astronomical (one female lays dozens of eggs and any number of those could be fertilized to produce females). So they have rules that prevent all but a fraction of eggs from being fertilized and complicated breeding contracts. As a result, 90% of their species is male. But since the Krogans were uplifted, they were never able to develop the necessary responsibility and maturity to limit their own birth rates. That's why the Salarians did it for them with a little help from the Turians.

I don't need an army, I have a Krogan. This line from the last trailer pretty much explains everything anyone need to know about the Krogans. I got that reference when I watched it. When the director from Guardians of the Galaxy said he was greatly inspired by Mass Effect and Aaryn Flynn greeted him because of it, I was like: " Is that it? No there's gotta be something else... ", and I was right. AVENGERS REFERENCE IN YOUR FACE SCRUBS.
