This may come off weird considering I barely even played ME1. But Kaidan came off as a boy scout. And apparently Cerberus was pretty gross in ME1.

Then Shepherd dies. It's tragic. Kaidan seems to have been hit hardest by the loss considering Shepherd saved him and humanity from a great threat. I got the feeling that e really admired Shepherd in a way that is like... Hero, 100%. He and Joker are the last to see her.

So then she shows up and she's working for Cerberus. He can't believe it. His hero, working for trash. Someone he deeply cared about, that should be dead, reappearing all of a sudden is a complete shock that causes turmoil. For all he knows, she's not even real, just some look alike. The only thing he can fall back on is his morals to guide him in tht heated moment.

Frankly, I found his reaction to be the MOST real out of everyone's I've "re encountered" thus far. Some of this acceptance from team mates is mostly based on that character s moral ambiguity and greyness. Perhaps even their lack of humanity. But it had a twinge of "we need you to have team mates and we want certain characters to come back so here you go, they just accept Shepherd is alive and are okay with working for Cerberus."

I've heard people that said Kaidan's cameos were bad in ME2 but they were spot on with my impression of him. It was great.

The dialogue went from verbal worship- a litany of her grand accomplishments and his image of her on a pedestal in this warm voice of remembered reverence... followed by her sins. I could see the pedestal come crashing down... He felt betrayed. I totally get it.

We'll make up in 3. Just wonder who's arms Shepherd will shelter in till then.
