dragontartare I finally asked my roommate to come look. Turns out I was in the Documents Mass Effect Two but not the actual Install Directory. But I messed too much stuff up. Just did a repair and restarted my computer. let's see how it goes. Gah. Sorry, should have thought to ask when you mentioned save games I hope it starts up this time around.

The helper guy didn't do the careful backup folder thing and just threw it in there. It only mentioned changing 5 files instead of the 25 you mentioned, but it was too late. All it did was crash after that. Had to uninstall. Downloading it agian now. Says 65 minutes.

dragontartareSo, I left while it was downloading to talk to people and figured it'd be done by the time I got back. Uh, no. Computer had randomly turned itself off. So, ME2 is back to DLing now, and I downloaded AVG and Spybot while I was at it to check my computer for viruses etc. Thought I'd be two or so hours in at this point. :/

Now it won't launch at all after a fresh download. Says it syncing the cloud, thinks, then does nothing.
This problem isn't even mod related now. I downloaded, messed with ME2 documents that I wasn't supposed to, crashed it 8 times, found the right file folder, dropped the mod in. Crashed a few times. Did a repair. It still crashed. So I uninstalled, then re downloaded. Now it doesn't launch and it totally was launching just fine all the other times. ME3 is launching fine still.
I've kinda reached my limit on this. If I were at home, I'd ask either computer inclined husband to troubleshoot some more but they're states away.
I work tomorrow. I'm willing to try one more thing, but if it's not the correct thing, I'll just move on to 3.

phoray If it's a completely fresh download (did you delete your install directory before downloading?) and the game still crashes, try to delete its document folder where it keeps all its configurations. It will re-create the folder when you start the game again and set everything to default. If it still crashes then, we can try something else. EDIT: you also said that your computer shuts down randomly. It may sound like a stupid question, but does it do that while you're actively using it or only when you have been away from it for some time? In the latter case it might just be some energy saving plan switching it to hibernate mode after a certain time of user inactivity. Just saying.

When I go to tell it uninstall, it says, "All add ons, files, and game add ons will be deleted from the install directory..." Nonetheless, I have now removed everything that says mass effect 2- the install directory as well as the document section I was fiddling with as well as the mod. It has nothing to do with the sleep instructions. For example, I was actively using it for a whole 5 minutes just a bit ago when it froze the screen and restarted itself. It's also done it twice in a row, where I've had maybe two minutes after just putting in my password and it restarts. Improperly, I would assume, because it doesn't ask to shut down any of my running programs. I went in just now and told all the power settings to NEVER turn the computer off. AVG says I have no Viruses and Spybot indicates no malware.

Improperly, I would assume, because it doesn't ask to shut down any of my running programs. AVG says I have no Viruses Uninstall can leave files behind that were not part of the original installation, i.e. any mod files you might have copied into the game folder might still be around. They may be completely harmless, since a newly downloaded game would have no reference to them unless there's some automatism like an override folder or some such, but better safe than sorry. It just does a restart without any error messages or prompts? Hmm. You could try to check the computer's event log to see if there's anything helpful in there. If no viruses were found, try check your Windows system files by opening a command prompt with administrator rights (if your user does not have administrator rights, right click the command prompt icon and choose "run as administrator" from the context menu) and type the following line sfc /scannow It will check your Windows system files for integrity and redownload any that are damaged. Might be worth a shot.

Gileadan I have now removed everything that says mass effect 2- the install directory, via the uninstall, as well as the document section I was fiddling with as well as the mod. Nothing comes up under a search for Mass Effect 2 on my computer now. I went in and told all the power settings to NEVER turn the computer off. The Admin command prompt is scanning now.---- it had not found any integrity violations, it says. I found the event logs, although I don't know how to check anything there. I looked under "System" as a first guess and found: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.Which is not very helpful. I know that. I checked the power cords and that all looks good. I've now told ME2 to download a third time. Have to be at work in an hour, so hopefully it'll finish downloading before I get home tonight, if the power settings and restarts will combine in a good way. Edit add: A friend has suggested Dusting the machine and checking the Temperature of it while trying to play a game. Although I haven't actually had these problems during playing of a game, I've never gotten past the boot up screen to actually play. I will have to save that for later after work. I don't have any canned air either.

phorayI just remembered one more thing - are you playing ME2 from the Origin client and have Origin enabled in game? I recall having a ton of trouble with that option turned on - it slowed the game to crawl in the menu on a rig way above recommended stats, and made actual gameplay impossible.

Maybe I should do some crash course Mass Effect while I'm at work today. Oh, the classes. The basic classes in MET verse are Adept (wizard), Engineer (summoner), Sentinel (Jack of all trades), soldier (weapon based warrior), Vanguard (magic based melee warrior) and Infiltrator (rogue with a sniper rifle). The enemies have shields, barriers and armor, that has to be stripped by specific powers, so you need a good combo with your two companions. Because I want to bring my love interest everywhere, and because I have already played with a Soldier and Sentinel, I want to combo my Vanguard (biotic/wizard/warrior) with Garrus (who has Iverload that works against shields) and an even stronger biotic/wizard class with a distinctively Engineer/tech Tali. Heh, unfortunately, I am too old to learn to use the sniper rifle with the damnable scope, so I prefer easy guns, and powers.

I recall having a ton of trouble with that option turned on - it slowed the game to crawl in the menu on a rig way above recommended stats, and made actual gameplay impossible. Origin is on, I am unaware if I had it enabled in game. Yesterday, I only got as far as the import save screen to test whether the Mass Effect Save website save file would work. Then I immediately exited out. Then I was dealing with all the crashes where I never even got the start screen to come up. Then after the 2nd DL, Origin would say it was cloud synching, reach 100% in a split second, then do nothing. No crash, no start screen, just nothing. So, hopefully the cleanse and re download of today will at least get me back to the start screen situation. @domi I prefer Dual Weilding Rogue in every DA game, although I've explored being a mage in all three now as well. But from what I recall of Mass Effect 1, I had no idea how to use any of the powers, pretty much, and was just shooting even though I was some hybrid thing like Kaidan. So, I'm going to go with just shooting things for now. I plan to date Jacob in ME2 and Kaidan in ME3, so how does that effect team balance? then again, I'm just going to play on casual mode, so perhaps it doesn't matter.

GileadanComputer friend suggested I use Prime95 to stress test the computer. It passed all the tests. This is the computer I bought last March My Computer So I'm not too surprised it passed Stress tests. I don't know why it would be an over heating problem. The power box is completely separate from the rest of the heat sensitive hardware. Okay. The computer hasn't restarted itself for an hour. ME2 still has 40 minutes till it's done downloading and I gotta run to work. ^^ Let's hope tonight bodes well.

In the first game the companions will just clear everything for you while you try to shoot at random targets. You don't really play as a melee in MET, save for a Vanguard, and I have not played it in a SP yet. In ME2, with powers, the aim assist is great, so you almost always hit, unless you obviously mistarget or try to shoot through a wall, heh. Always put piercing mods on your guns... ah, just ask if you go along. It takes a bit of adjustment, but the second game is way easier to learn than the first. In ME2, I would actually recommend a Sentinel as an easy intro class. Use Overload on everything that has red and blue bars, then shoot a pistol, Submachine gun or assault rifle, whatever you like the most till Overload is back. If the bar is yellow, then do the same with Warp. Easy. Whoever you bring along will work well with you. Same with a soldier, but you will have to pace yourself on those grenades.... I don't remember what Jacob had, since I only use him for his loyalty mission, but i think he was fine, and so is Kaiden, iirc, very similar to a sentinel or something like that. Again, never really used him in ME3, because of my negative reaction to him in ME2. Plus, the moment I saw Thane, all other companions ceased to exist as potential romances.

phoray The classes are a bit hard to understand until you've played a bit, I think. Heck, when I started my ME2 thread, I thought I had picked a different class than I actually had *eyeroll* I played on casual, too. It's super easy and you can experiment safely. Just stay near cover so you can duck behind it if your health starts to drop, and you'll be fine. There are a few bosses that require some actual use of tactics, but not many. And of course, don't forget that you can use your squad mates' powers as well. As for Jacob, I thought the same thing at first. He seems the obvious romance choice for femShep. I'm interested in seeing if you end up having the same reservations about his romance as I did. It's no one but Garrus for me now

I think Jacob is bad for F!Shepard self esteem, tbh, and I'd rather play a spinster Shepard than Jacob... ...seeing you take another woman's cast out (and an oh soooo speeeecialll one at that) and you are not good enough for him to stay true to... why he is such a chick magnet for exceptional women, I can't fathom. Neither the looks, nor the smarts, nor the loyalty, nor a sense of humour... he's really... nothing in a game full of larger than life, extraordinary men.

In ME, the soldier is your weapons-based class. A lot of people use soldier for their first playthrough. A lot of people also play on casual difficulty. One thing I wish ME1 and 2 had was an abilty to change class part way through the game (I know it's lore breaking... but sometimes I think it's OK to allow for player conveniences... especiallly when there's no multplayer involved.) Jacob is a biotic soldier and is actually pretty weak as a squad mate in general. On casual difficulty, it won't matter. I won't comment on the romance with him since I just don't tend to play as FemShep. Kaidan in ME3 is an awesome squad mate on all difficulties.

I won't comment on the romance with him since I just don't tend to play as FemShep. Kaidan in ME3 is an awesome squad mate on all difficulties. I think ME also allows you to improve very fast. My first play through I started ME1 with a Sentinel, could barely made it past the first few meters, then just died in the first Geth battle still in the Intro on Casual. Switched to a Soldier, still could not go past the first battle with Geth, so had my husband to fight it for me, but was able to finish it after that on Casual. Second time, on Normal, I did not even notice that battle that made me cry first time round on Normal on a Sentinel. Once you get the cover, aim, combos and shield/armor stripping, which is something you do not do in the other Bio games, and learn to pause a lot, you can cruise (with rare exceptions, like Grissholm). DA2 was much harder, because there are battles there I could not have done on Normal, no matter what. My next playthrough for ME2/3, I am either going Hardmode, or playing without pausing if I can't do Hardmode. Fighting is actually quite fun once you understand the basics. Heh, that's if I can fit it before Andromeda. So, phoray, ask for tips if you are having a hard time, if someone as bad as I am can play it fine, you can certainly pick it up!

Wow, this sounds like it might be tough to get the game running. I hope it will work out.
As Gileadan said, definitely turn of the Origin in-game overlay in the Origin Settings. While you are at it - and if you still plan to use the controller mod - also turn off the function "Automatically keep my games up to date" in the Origin settings. This Origin Auto-updater can mess with mods and that can lead to all sorts of trouble.
But yea, if you do a fresh install, first try to run the game without mods. If that works, make a backup of your game files (so you don't have to re-download if something goes wrong), then try to install mods.
Good luck!

My problem with it personally was that the game seems to want to force the romance with Jacob, all while Jacob is reluctant to start anything. It felt so awkward talking to him when everything Shepard says comes across as a flirt because of how she says it. I didn't like my Shepard throwing herself at him and getting nothing in return. Plus, any personality he had in the tutorial mission disappears once they settle into the Normandy. Garrus, on the other hand, wants it as much as Shepard does And he's awesome to boot.

dragontartare yes, what you have mentioned contributed as well to my discounting Jacobs as an LI. I think a lot of players had exactly the same reaction to Hale's performance there.

Yeah, it's a really odd directing decision to allow one actor to sound so seductive and the other so dry in the same conversation. I like Hale otherwise.

So, phoray , ask for tips if you are having a hard time, if someone as bad as I am can play it fine, you can certainly pick it up! On the Xbox, ME1 and ME2 will not open up Insanity until after you've beaten the game once; so my first playthrough on each of them was on Normal (which is normal for me with new games anyways). My first playthrough on ME1 Insanity was an NG+ game; and although it was long and tediuous, I didn't die much at all because my Shep already had the best weapons and some pretty decent armor. Then I moved onto ME2 Insanity using an NG+ game there as well... and it was, well, Insane; particularly in the first half of the game... sure, you have all your talents, but all your weapons are back to square 1 with no upgrades. Also, you don't get the ME1 import P/R bonus and the ME2 to ME2 credit import bonus is quite a bit less so you can't buy as many upgrades early on as you can with a ME1 to ME2 import. Still, I got through it without breaking my Xbox (but it was close at times). I still die, but not nearly as much as I did that first time through. By comparison, ME3 is almost a cake walk on all difficulties with pretty much any class. My eyesight though is starting to really give me some grief... I'm missing a lot of shots I used to make. Hopefully, ME:A will come out before I'm simply not able to see the screen anymore.
