In my experience, a Windows installation that has been around for a while can foul itself up through incomplete uninstallations, a clogged up registry and, if you have really old PC games installed from a disk, through DRM running amok on your operating system. One prime offender was the original disk version of Mass Effect 1, which installed a faulty version of the SecuROM DRM that was applied to all my files, not just Mass Effect. I bungled around for days until I figured out that I had to update the SecuROM drivers manually.

I keep my own self-built rig healthy by manually checking whether the folders of uninstalled software are gone, completely cleaning out old video drivers when I upate them, and occasionally cleaning out the registry and old temporary files. My best result so far is a seven year long Windows installation running without a hitch. Something you don't have to bother with when you play on consoles, so I see the appeal. To me, it has become a two decades old routine.

You haven't missed it... hacking or bypassing does not yield renegade poiints.  You do get the same sort of notice box... but it's adding credits to your inventory in that case, not P/R points.

What's GiB? It gave me 100,000 credits since the import I got had a million credits or something. (Market must have crashed ) And picked up about 4k doing puzzles.

So, Jacob described Cerberus as a pro human group. So that means, what, they're species-ist? Does that make Miranda and Jacob Species-ist?

Cerberus - That's a pretty major plot point... you sure you want that answered outright?

The upgrades you buy are pretty expensive and "researching" (i.e. implementing) the other upgrades you find on missions takes a pretty vast amount of mineral resources (which you get by scanning planets... which numerous people find rather tedious).  Personally, I don't mind scanning... I find it a nice quiet break from fighting and making conversation choices... but that's just me.  One way around it, is to use the gibbed editor to give yourself a bunch more of these things right off the bat.  I'll leave it up to you... it's your game.

Jacob acted like I was supposed to know who Cerberus was. Told me I'd destroyed some of their labs back in ME1. So I must not like them. But all I was asking is if they were species-ist as a main component of their Mission Statement.

How do I check how much stuff I have? All these codexes and pile of money and renegade points just flash across my screen as I did the beginning of the game.

I'm definitely not a collector of all the things. In DAI, I have never completed a mosaic, never intentionally got any beer bottles and mugs, and have only dabbled in potions. Pushed for bees and wasps though. Oh, have done all the WT quests. I will see how I feel about scanning when I get there.

I worked yesterday, did one hour of gaming (after fiddling with a mod ad re downloading a zip opened etc(, and have worked today, 11 hour shifts. I can do my usual GULP of gaming tomorrow and you shall see all my comments.

I need to get FRAPs again. Weird what Windows reinstall took and didn't take.

If you had done ME1, there are a couple of missions where you do destroy some of their labs.  I tend to consider them more "human supremacist" in ME2 rather than just straight racist (or species-ist)... but their ideology also gets warped further in ME3 due to events that don't get revealed until very near the end of ME3.  Here's a quote from the Wiki (I don't think it's too spoilery, but use your descretion:

Yes, a lot of ME2's good moments are actually building on the player's attachment to the first game, and that includes the Normandy.

But there will be a lot of new faces too that you can enjoy just as much as a player of ME1! This game has the biggest crew of the trilogy.

Did some scanning- wasted some probes before I figured out what I was supposed to be doing. What are the ratings? Rich, moderate and poor?

I'm finding the style of dialogue odd. There seems to be "nice","neutral", and "rude." Where is flirt? Sarcastic Hawke?

But also, so far the recruitment of companions doesn't seem to be optional. I'm bothered that the bounty hunter seemingly beating on that alien for funsies didn't have a "never mind" option. I guess this is where the Bioware branches differ.

Aria seemed to be trying to hard to be interesting. And she says information isn't free but gave me free information anyway.
