I'm currently trying to get away from suing the Arc Pistol so much, for a while I was putting it on nearly every kit. While the charge mechanic balances it somewhat, it can out-DPS a Black Widow.
So what's your crutch history? What did you rely on and when?
First months from release: Carnifex + stagger power/overload - Human Engineer, Asari Adept and Turian Sentinel
After a year or so: Infiltrators, specifically Claymore Infiltrators - this ran on for far too long Hurricane+Acolyte
When I thought I was good: GI+Talon HSol+Claymore (still good to use though) Grenade Spam + Harrier MQE in general
Present (knows I scrub): Arc Pistol While I still use some of my old crutchess, I'm still aiming for more varied play. I can proudly say that I've never used the reegar, flamer or snap cheese for any real duration. My AIU used a Claymore and I did use the TGI+Harrier a bit, but they both got tired quick.

Stage 1. When in Doubt, Play a Vanguard. Stage 2. When in Grave Doubt, Play a Batarian Vanguard. Stage 3. When Out of Incendiary Ammo, Weep Bitter Tears and Play a Turian Sentinel
that's as far as I got.

Personally I don't mind if someone is using so called "crutch" characters or weapons. It's all about having fun you know, for me at least. If someone uses TGI with Harrier and knows what to do with it why should I complain? I might be the last in the scoreboard but if we all had fun, what's the matter?
Honestly, I used probably all crutch kits back when I started my MP adventure. Now I try to use more different builds and weapons. For example I've had a LOT of fun with Drell Assassin and Raptor recently.
You know, it's about understanding and in what mood you currently are.

Fat Turians aren't necessarily a gameplay crutch for me because I might be technically capable of playing other kits, but they're more like a psychological crutch. If I go too long without playing them I go into Turian Withdrawal, which manifests as acute psychosis.

When I started playing: AIU because I started playing after all DLCs released and I got it from the DLC starter package.
When I moved from silver to gold difficulty: AIU + Claymore, TGI + Harrier (I feel so ashamed) and always full points in fitness for extra health
When I felt comfortable in gold PUG lobbies: Incendiary Rounds, Geth Scanner, Acolyte, Arc Pistol and Venom Shotgun
Nowadays: Still Incendiary Rounds and Acolyte. I almost always carry an Acolyte with me when I don't have another stagger weapon, just because I still can't deal with multiple Phantoms on higher waves.

I use that kind of set. You have to make it work. Do you think that a random pug can put a Claymore on AIU and destroy everything in sight? I don't think so.

I didn't mean to say that AIU + Claymore doesn't require skill. You have to be good at reload cancelling to make this build work. To me a crutch is not something that requires no skill it is something that is very strong the way I used it and that has gotten me into difficulties that I wouldn't have been able to manage without it. The AIU has fantastic survivability with Repair Matrix, Snap Cheese is a strong power and Tactical Cloak even gives you additional shotgun damage on top of the usual damage boost. When used correctly, this build is way stronger than most other builds in the game.

My original gold crutch was the krogan sentinel weapons platform. I played that kit so much when I moved up due to the high health/shields and the damage of lift grenades. Following that, the GI w/ whatever.

OG crutch, same as OPs... Human Engineer with Carnifex. God I sucked.
My first decently leveled UR was the Saber, and my AJA became my crutch, and I wasn't terrible. Skipped pull, she was a biotic soldier with a defensive buff (Offensive bubble was a preposterous idea)
Crimson Vanguard explained the Falcon to me one day. It changed the entire game for me, I kinda got gud overnight, and I Falcon'd all the things. Still Falcon a fair bit, fucking hilarious gun.
Salarian Infiltrator is not my crutch. He is just the best, most complete, kit in the game, and would be the last man standing. This is not being said at gunpoint from SMR.

I looked at the offensive bubble evo the first time and thought it was a ridiculous concept - scrubville, population 1 I'm still amazed at how little discussion the SI gets for being as good as he is, especially against Geth. TC then ED, plus PM for bosses make him virtually indestructible vs Gold competition. This is one of the easiest Gold solos in the game.

Crutches? Nice another internet hero 1337 thread. A hero is nice. But a grill signing I need a hero is nicer. ... Then you show up at her doorstep with a loud ass flame thrower yelling "Big Machine!" But flamer is not that broken alone, so meh. It's just sometimes very loud.

TSent, Falcon, Incendiary ammo and Chain overload. He puts the troll in "crowd control."
My other crutch is MQI with Carrier and Incendiary Ammo. Also Human Adept with Acolyte or TSol with Piranha/Eagle.
Also, what TTT said.

When I first started getting into gold, my only real hope was the Vorcha Soldier. I don't remember what weapon I used on him though. Other than that, I was pretty much just equally bad with everything. Now I can play gold with pretty much anything (if occasionally unsuccessfully), so I guess I've improved. I don't think I've used him now for ages now outside of the odd time when using a randomizer.
