You get to go on a date with any character from classic cinema. Who do you pick? I'm thinking stick to grounded fiction, real world, no sci-fi/fantasy/horror and modern era setting, by which I mean post 1920s. I'll probably go with Simon Dermott from How to Steal a Million. Sophia Loren of course. Also - no date but I'd love to hang out with Steve McQueen, I've always liked him a ton.

Drat, there goes my chance to go on a date with Jessica Rabbit.
Come to think of it, it's actually really hard to think of female characters from classic films, that aren't sci-fi/fantasy/horror, are set in the "modern" era and that I've actually seen? Most of the classic movies I can think of only have male characters in them.
On a non-date, I'd probably want to hang out with Charlie Croker from the Italian Job, because Michael Caine was a legend in that movie. Or maybe Hilts from the Great Escape, because who wouldn't want to ride motorbikes with Steve McQueen while evading Nazis?

I would've thought you'd be an Audrey Hepburn guy.

(A slightly stupid question, since you'd not have recommended it otherwise)

Captain Wentworth (Ciaran Hinds) from 'Persuasion'. If I can manage to divert him from Anne Elliott, of course.

Well, that's just unfortunate. No SF/Fantasy and a post-1920 setting, you've limited this question to exactly the type of movie I do not, as a rule, watch
mousestalker : I like "Captain Blood" (read the book recently after re-watching the movie), but it isn't exactly a post-1920 setting

If I opened it up to cinema of any setting, I bet nearly everyone picks a pirate or smuggler of some kind. Half of everyone will probably pick Han Solo.

I'd recommend The Mark of Zorro for Power and The Scarlet Pimpernel for Howard (although Howard has been part of many other amazing films like Gone with the Wind).

Gotcha. edit: I've just gone on a bit of a journey thinking maybe that I had seen The Scarlet Pimpernel, but then thinking that it had Christopher Lee and that time frame didn't match up at all, and then remembering that it was Ian McKellan who I confused in my memory with Christopher Lee for embarassing reasons, and realizing that this still definitely doesn't match up and that I've only seen the 1980s verson of The Scarlet Pimpernel. So that is my story for today.
