I looked but couldn't find a poll already and I want to see what the results are.
They each have their good and bad things, epic moments and dumb plotholes, but we still love them despite the flaws.
What's your favourite and why? Is it the story? The characters? The gameplay?

I'm certain that there is a previous poll... unless it got deleted (the mods do have to pare down the size of the site now and then).
I'm not going to vote, because my bottom line is that I like them all equally for different reasons. I really like the each game is different enough from the other two to avoid my feeling that I'm playing the same game 3 times over just to complete the main story line.

ME2 even though I have more ME3 playthroughs than ME2
Why? Harbinger. He has one of the best scenes in the trilogy in Arrival and my Shepard enjoys hearing him talk smack. He's also one of the best characters in the trilogy

I'm always about to pick 2 but to be honest as standalone games 1 is by far the best and most replay-worthy. If I play 2 I HAVE to play 3 too I feel and I also have to play 1 first.
1 I can just play and pretend it's a standalone story because it is. The Reaper threat is out there in some sequel that never got made, I can pretend because it's largely irrelevant to what the point of Mass Effect 1 was.

ME3. I thought that perhaps ME2 is he better game in terms of structure and gameplay and introduced some great characters, the plot and the emotion of ME3 get me every time, it's the atmosphere. I think the improved character interaction helps a lot.
The perfect game for me would have ME1's RPG flavour, with the skill tree and upgraded weapons and armour for all and planetary exploration, ME2's side missions because i like the variety and ME3's feels and character interactions. I think I probably like the controls best in ME3. Here's hoping for Andromeda.

ME1, by far.
- It has the best atmosphere and tone imo; Ilos felt really ancient-- and, the intrigue at Noveria felt very authentic - It had the the most compelling villains-- find me a reaper cooler than Sovereign or a more compelling villain than Saren, you wont. - it didn't have a stupid protection block for biotics. - It had the most skill versatility; lots of skills and bonus talents. - It had the best morality system, you could talk renegade if you wanted but still not be a douche-- unlike ME2. - It had the best renegade lines. Openly talking shit about the counci, Asari Commandos or the big stupid jellyfish-- bludgeoning his way trough bureaucracy. - it had Wrex and Benezia.
Controversially, ME2 is my least favorite. ME2 had boring gameplay for power users; which gives it a disadvantage compared to ME3 and ME1. I love the ending in ME3 just as much as the Suicide Mission, so it doesn't affect anything. And, it doesn't have too much Jacob or Jack-- which gives it a leg up next to ME2.

The first one, because it captured the wonder of star trek, but had a lived in feel like Babylon 5. Plus I love the mako to bits.

Mass Effect 2
Best all around. Really the only thing that gets me now is that it tries a little too hard to punish the player for being out of cover, which was something that wasn't much of an issue until I played so much ME3 and got used to nearly never using it. Has the best base game balance, even if some of the DLC stuff was a bit overpowered. Classes were probably also the most unique and relatively balanced, despite the fact that there was still a hierarchy to an extent. Thought the power system also encouraged a greater variety of builds than you get in ME1 or ME3.

I love them all dearly, but I voted ME3. I love it to bits. For me it has the best squad (ME2 had too many for my liking ), the best story, best side missions, best combat and best banter. Plus there's so much activity going on on the Normandy and everyone has interesting things to say about missions instead of endless calibrating It was also the game that completely sucked me into the MEverse. I thought I'd play the trilogy once and be over with it because I was never a sci-fi fan, but by the end of 3 and seeing all the big choices play out I was amazed by it and restarted right away. And keep playing ever since.

Mass Effect 2 because it has my favorite cast of squadmates. They are all amazing, and I love their recruitment and loyalty missions. I also loved how we got to experience working for the 'bad guys' and we saw a seedier side of the galaxy in places like Omega, etc.

ME1 is my favourite, even though it is the most "boring". It has loads of things that annoy me:
Sluggish movement that gets you killed a lot (in or out of the Mako)
The inventory system completely collapses after level 20 or so with too many of the same items.
The game seems too "static" after you leave the Citadel for the first time, as cinematic cutscenes and unique squadmate lines stop happening so often - it almost seems to me as though Bioware's money run out and they had to thin out the content a bit.
However, despite all this stuff I prefer it. There's something in the atmosphere of 1 that I only really feel again when playing though N7 missions and a few of the loyalty missions in 2.
Another thing is that I felt 2 and 3 went off in the wrong direction in terms of story. Working for Cerberus felt completely wrong to me, and the fact that most of 3 was dominated by Cerberus turning up for no reason put me off. Cerberus to me were a really bland part of the universe compared to things like the Rachni.

I wasn't sure how many votes ME1 would get, but so far it seems to be doing well even if it is in third place.
My favourite is ME2, with ME3 very close behind. They really expanded the galaxy so much, giving it a better and darker feel, exploring and fleshing out the lore. More hubs to visit and better level design. Loveable/hateable and memorable characters with amazing loyalty missions. Really fun interactions with NPCs and interrupts. Everything feels so alive.
The main plot wasn't that great though, it was more like a really large DLC, and working for Cerberus was dumb. But everything else more than makes up for that.

ME2 had more enjoyable moments than the other two for me. It was a game that I recall being excited for since getting hooked on the first where things like an enemy's combat barks were no longer eye-rolling and new characters were introduced. Any flaws were outweighed by the strengths and it's one I still enjoy playing.
The first game is a second favorite for the environments, the unplanned encounters with enemies like thresher maws, the exploitation of physics and the wider range of outcomes for certain worlds.
The third game is unmatched when it comes to combat fun but the unskippable cutscenes, the railroad script, the lack of choice in who gets to be on the team and ghastly character creation without mods makes it the least enjoyable.

It's a close tie between ME2 and ME3, but I voted for ME2. I enjoyed the loyalty missions of ME2 a lot.

ME 2 is my favorite, and for several reasons. First is the gameplay. The combat is not quite as faceroll-easy as ME 3, Insanity was actually a challenge (for me) and neither is it as tedious as ME 1 with all it's Immunity spamming enemies. Different weapons had uses and there were more good choices than bad. I eventually grew to enjoy the protection system even though I wasn't too sure about it at first. Likewise, the class balance is the best of the trilogy. All classes are fairly close in power, the hybrids don't completely overshadow the base classes for once. The individual missions are great, I enjoy all the recruiting and loyalty missions and most of the smaller side stuff as well. I like that they even broke things up with a few non-combat missions thrown in there. Coming in a close second to the gameplay are the characters. With the exception of Jacob, this is by far my favorite squad line-up of all three games. I like that the main emphasis of the game is recruiting and getting to know all these wonderful characters, and I think my biggest regret of the whole trilogy is that they have so little screen time in ME 3. Last but not least is the Suicide Mission itself. It was a great payoff for all the recruitment efforts and I loved having control of who lives and who dies like that. In my canon Shep playthrough I put a lot of thought into who I could kill and how, without making Shepard look like an incompetent. I was very pleased with the result. I don't think I've played a stage in any other game like the Suicide Mission and it's my favorite mission of the trilogy by a big margin. .

Marginally ME2 over ME1. Still loved ME3 after they did the extended endings. ME2 for the mechanics, story, and mostly because of the characters. If it had leaned a little more towards an improved version of ME's exploration on planets, it would have been close to perfect.
ME1 will forever have the best soundtrack

The second, but it's hard for me to separate 2nd and 3rd. I pick second because it's where the game makes a huge leap forward towards all things I want to see in the games, and it left in the game a lot of things that would have been cut in the later games. It's charming that way, imperfect, offering more to the heart.
