Is it confirmed that all we have seen so far (Cora, Peebee, Drak, Liam, Vetra, Jaal) are all the squad mates we'll be getting or could we get some surprises? I don't want to be too whiny about it but with the exception of Jaal the line up is a bit boring. Obviously I don't know the Characters all that well and they could all end up being very different from what we have seen before. However I already have them catorgerized in my head. Cora = Ashley, carreer military women. Drak = uh...Krogan that does Krogan things, Liam = Jacob, Vetra from the clips a bit of quotes from her dialogue looks to be cross between Garrus and Jack. Jaal...well I don't actually have a clue on him. Peebee seems like a cross between Tali and Liara. In essence it all seems been there romanced that. Hell I am a bit salty that the Quarians (as far as we know) didn't make it in. Tali is love, Tali is life. I hope I am wrong and everyone comes out with a nice unique personality make up that is distinct from previous games. What does everyone think? Can we expect some surprises or should we/I just temper my expectations? Honestly, almost all of that is just negative speculation on your part as we don't know anywhere near enough to come to any kind of judgement. Nothing wrong with being a pessimist but for the most part your complaint is a bit baseless. Bare in mind Bioware have stated that a 7th character was cut from the game because he was too similar to a previous character. That should be a pretty clear indication that they are doing their best to make our new squad mates 'new' and not just rehashes. You aren't wrong. Hell I would go even further and say it doesn't even have enough basis to be speculation. It's just me voicing my own concerns over something that is a potential, albeit highly unlikely, outcome. You do bring up a good point when referring to the 7th squad mate. I hope I have made it clear, if not with the OP but with my subsequent posts that I haven't "judged" anything yet. Just that I am voicing my trepidation of the squad outcome.

I hope I am wrong and everyone comes out with a nice unique personality make up that is distinct from previous games. What does everyone think? Can we expect some surprises or should we/I just temper my expectations? Partly, I hope they are off the stereotypes asigned to them! Maybe Drak is some kind of Okeer (as in: More than a Krogan who just shoots stuff) or at least like Wrex (as much as I liked Grunt - loved his loyalty and his trust "Shepard is my battlemaster, he/she has no equal!" - but in the end? He might have been the perfect Krogan (I disagree on that, I think Wrex is more perfect - why? Biotics! Grunt doesn't have any), but in the end he's just a Tank who shoots stuff and doesn't have any lofty goals or visions for the future of his race! Hell, his name alone shows that, he chose it because it's simple, uninspired etc.) Peebee at least seems closer to Matriarch Aethyta ("Let's make our own Mass Relays, lets explore new technologies etc. etc." - Unlike most stuffy Asari, especially the Matrons and Matriarchs, who all play "The long Game"...is it any wounder I prefer Asari Maidens like Liara (who still has dreams etc.)) than most other Asari, so I will probably like her (hope she makes me laugh a lot - as long as she can be serious when needed!) Liam? Hope he isn't Kaidan/Jacob/James 2.0 (his choice of weapon etc. seems uninspired...I kind of miss having some sniper companion or a crafty engineer like Tali ) Cora kind of reminds me of Miranda (which is not a bad thing, hell I would have no problem if she was artificially created (tailor made) like Miranda, as long as she's not suffering from "perfection syndrome" like Miranda, who's deeply insecure despite having tons of advantages compared to other humans! It would also explain why her biotics are on Jack's level or better (she can keep up with Asari Huntresses after all! Not something most humans can brag about!)), I kind of like her (ok: Her haircut could be nicer, but otherwise? Damned, I think she's hot!) Vetra hopefully is something new (sadly: Not a biotic, would have loved to see someone similar to Nyreen - especially as a permanent squadmate!), not the stereotypical Turian soldier who loves their military etc. (That's one of the reasons I liked Garrus, because he was not a stereotypical Turian! In fact he hated their mindless acceptance of the rules etc.) As for Jaal? Well, let's wait and see (we don't really know all that much about him, sadly!) greetings LAX ps: I agree with you OP that we could have had some more inspired squadmates...I'd have liked an other Ardat Yakshi (one that doesn't like killing, but doesn't want to be locked up either!) for example...maybe someone like Aethyta (an Asari who sees her species's flaws and wants to address them!) and I'd have loved a Salarian (female!) who isn't into politics and being the power behind the scenes ...hell, someone like Aria T'Loak would be fun, too
Do you not see the irony in stating that you feel like we could have had more inspired squad mates and then proceeding to state that characters that are the same as previous ones would be fun?

At least design-wise. Three fingers, backward broken legs, it's Javik all over again (ugly yet interesting bald squid things turned into a regular MW race, yay retcons!). I bet they'll use the same biotic and tech animations too. I know, cheaper this way, but this is a new galaxy, these aliens should feel truly alien.

I bet they'll use the same biotic and tech animations too. I know, cheaper this way, but this is a new galaxy, these aliens should feel truly alien. The physical design isn't that exciting I'll agree, though I am less interesting in their physiology rather than their culture. Part of what I loved about ME was all the different cultures and more over how those different cultures spawned prejudices, assumptions and bias. While I don't generally celebrate these things it did lend the IP a fascinating sense of realism and pushed players to form their own opinions on the different races. They were all distinct, unique and got nice glimpses into each character from learning about their culture. It was all the more rewarding when such a eclectic group of people were able to find common ground and fought to use that as a unifying force against the Reapers. Part of my complaint is that a portion of the reason I loved the characters from the past ME series was because these were new alien species and their cultures gave unique insight into each of their personalities. In ME:A we are in an entirely new galaxy and are squad mates so far, with the exception of Jaal, are Races we have already seen before. That sense of discovery and drawing these previously unknown lines may not be there in abundance of it we got from previous games.

For me it seems like they just copied what they did with ME1 and instead of a quarian we get an angaran. Ashley = Cora Kaidan = Liam Garrus = Vetra Liara = PeeBee Wrex = Drack Obviously the personalities won't be the same but still. They could've given us another salarian or even a batarian instead of another asari or krogan. They can't be like ME1. ME1 could allow one of those to die. Bioware has already said none of them can be killed. As to similarities most would probably disagree or be disgusted by my interpretation so far: Drack reminds me of a cross between Okeer and Ashley who have lived long and seen many battles...war stories abound. Cora -No offense but she reminds me more of a Jacob, Kasumi and Miranda crossover... take that as you will. Liam reminds me the most of a cross between Thane and Joker... fresh out of the boat with views were they are devoted to cause but still open to new thoughts. PB reminds me of a cross between Jack and Zaheed... rebel to society. Vetra -She reminds me of a cross between EDI, Tali and Mordin... scientist who does not care for the codes established by their people. Jaal -All I can say about him is he gives me the vibes of a Garrus-esk character combined with a little bit of Javik... that would be ...disturbing. 7000% off base I know. My main disappointment is over the tiny size of the squad rather than the confirmed individuals themselves. I'm hoping there is a 7th squad mate; also from a new alien race. I mean, they couldn't have just created the Kett and Angara, right? Still may get such. Welcome to the world of DLC.

Nonsense. Of course the squadmates are inspired. They're inspired... by previous Mass Effect Games. Possibly other BioWare games as well. Seriously, there's gonna be some recognizable tropes and archetypes, with hopefully enough remixing or new flavor to make it fresh. And I'm getting Javik vibes from Jaal. Anyone who sports a monocle unironically has to be way into themselves

I see 6 party members as a good thing. Less is more. This way writers aren't spread thin on the amount of characters they have to write. They can spend more time on these guys, fleshing out their characters and arc as much as possible.

A recent article said the actual reason the Salarian was cut was because the game became too big, so 6 is the chosen number unless he was a cut 8th and we still have a secret 7th.

Honestly, there's not much to say that hasn't already been said. I would equate Liam to Kaiden before Jacob though. Even if they are both similar in the sense that they're human males who lack a personality. /savage

Too early to say regarding their characters, but the squad composition is definitely as safe as it can get. Jaal swaps for Tali (with the design that could actually pass for unmasked Quarians lol) and the rest 5/6 is same as ME1 squad. Humans are a must we all know that, so they could at least mix it up with other races. But we get a turian for the 4th time, Krogan 3rd, Asari 4th.

I don't mind getting mostly returning species. I always wanted this game to have new Turian and Quarian squadmates because although I really liked Garrus and Tali I feel that there are a lot of sides to those species we missed due to mostly seeing them through just two characters. I certainly don't feel that Vetra is a Garrus clone, what with her unscrupulous backstory, and I'm looking forward to interacting with her. Jaal looks interesting too, and I like his design.
But I'm not particularly impressed by Peebee so far, and Drack is a major disappointment. They say that she's an atypical Asari, which gives me some hope, but the whole 100-year old lone wolf adventurer thing sounds really similar to Liara. And Drack sounds like pretty much every other Krogan we've met. They both feel a bit same-ey and rehashed.
It's difficult to judge Liam and Cora, because the human squaddies have always been less interesting in comparison to the exotic aliens. I'll have to wait until I play the game to really judge them, but they don't particularly interest me just yet.

we don't know them yet i find all of them interesting, specially PB and Vetra, female turian, just awesome a powerful krogan must be in the squad, a biotic, in this case, asari Jaal, fantastic that there is a squadmate from a new species Cora, military and vanguard at the same time, that's new, she seems effective maybe ther will be some new squedmates through dlc, who knows what "inspired" squadmates did you expect? what is "more inspired" ? I doubt there will be squadmate DLC. They were also including a salarian in the squad but he got cut because the game was becoming too large.

Do you not see the irony in stating that you feel like we could have had more inspired squad mates and then proceeding to state that characters that are the same as previous ones would be fun? Well, some new stuff would be nice, but some types are great (I love humans who have problems most of us would want to have (like say having the "burden" of perfection - Miranda's problem)) So no, not irony man (if I like a certain type of character I don't have a problem if they bring it back (or a new version of said character)) greetings LAX

It is too early to say, but I agree that the companions seem kind of stock at the moment. None of them feel like they're exploring anything new, except I guess Jaal to the extent that we'll presumably learn about his people.
Though I'm wondering if they may be intending for the characters to be deliberately similar to the ME1 crew, but also inversions in key areas. Like, Ashley and Cora are your by the book soldier types, but Ashley was kinda xenophobic so Cora served with Asari Commandos. Peebee's an unorthdox young Asari Academic just like Liara, but the developers seem to like to position her as the anti-Liara with her personality. Vetra seems in attitude fairly similar to Garrus but where he was a cop, she seems to have been on the other side of the law.

I think they're sticking with well known species for most of the squad because they're trying to 1. have a soft reboot for the series and win back fans that were mad at the ME3 ending and 2. make the game accessible for the new fans they want to draw in.
I've liked most of the characters in Bioware games and the ones I didn't I thought were at least tolerable so I'm not really worried for the characters in Andromeda. As long as the characters aren't boring I'll be cool. At least if I hate them I'm feeling something towards them.

1. have a soft reboot for the series and win back fans that were mad at the ME3 ending BioWare doesn't give a crap about the handful of people who threw a fit about the endings, and no one in their right mind would try to appeal to people who harass and threaten creators who don't do exactly what those people want.

It was way more than a handful, hence why they made the extended cut. I personally don't hate the endings, but I played after the extended cut was made.
