Is it confirmed that all we have seen so far (Cora, Peebee, Drak, Liam, Vetra, Jaal) are all the squad mates we'll be getting or could we get some surprises? I don't want to be too whiny about it but with the exception of Jaal the line up is a bit boring. Obviously I don't know the Characters all that well and they could all end up being very different from what we have seen before. However I already have them catorgerized in my head. Cora = Ashley, carreer military women. Drak = uh...Krogan that does Krogan things, Liam = Jacob, Vetra from the clips a bit of quotes from her dialogue looks to be cross between Garrus and Jack. Jaal...well I don't actually have a clue on him. Peebee seems like a cross between Tali and Liara. In essence it all seems been there romanced that. Hell I am a bit salty that the Quarians (as far as we know) didn't make it in. Tali is love, Tali is life.
I hope I am wrong and everyone comes out with a nice unique personality make up that is distinct from previous games. What does everyone think? Can we expect some surprises or should we/I just temper my expectations?

I know that when I heard the game went to a new galaxy with all new aliens I said to myself, "Sounds boring, I hope I get a bunch of humans and alien races I already know in my team." /s
I was hoping that we'd get a whole team of new aliens. But it seems we get one, and from the trailers we've seen, we're fighting and conflicting with other humans for large parts :/

I think you're jumping the gun here. We only have a couple lines of dialogue and a quote to go by for all squad mates except for Jaal. Relax and wait for the game to come out to make any judgements about characters. I think this is fair honestly. I know I should wait, I also know my brain won't do that. These aren't hard and fast judgments, just cursory observations. But tell me I am wrong, what little we know of our crew does it not seem, with our imperfect knowledge, to be a bit derivative?

Man, if there ever was an inspired squad mate, it was the guy on the right: They don't make them like they used to.

That's always a smart thing to do. Judge characters based on their race and roll.
Cora is in the military, and a woman. She's like Ashley! Liam is black. So he's Jacob!
Why are these characters so uninspired?

Why are these characters so uninspired? I think you misunderstand my concern. I am mostly worried that THAT is how Bioware has written these characters. I'll be quite happy if that is not the case.

Does it? What does it say? I have mostly based it off his Squad profile. His job seemed similar to what Jacob did and his quote in the character page honestly sounds like something Jacob would say. Form the little information I have his temperament seems similar. I don't have a lot of info to go on so when I see and read this I worry that Bioware has written him to be too much like Jacob. I am not saying he IS like Jacob, rather I am worried that he is.

Just because two characters share a military background doesn't necessarily mean they'll have the same personality. Why would Cora share a personality with Ashley? Does everyone in your workplace have the same personality?

we don't know them yet
i find all of them interesting, specially PB and Vetra, female turian, just awesome a powerful krogan must be in the squad, a biotic, in this case, asari Jaal, fantastic that there is a squadmate from a new species Cora, military and vanguard at the same time, that's new, she seems effective
maybe ther will be some new squedmates through dlc, who knows
what "inspired" squadmates did you expect? what is "more inspired" ?

For me it seems like they just copied what they did with ME1 and instead of a quarian we get an angaran.
Ashley = Cora Kaidan = Liam Garrus = Vetra Liara = PeeBee Wrex = Drack
Obviously the personalities won't be the same but still. They could've given us another salarian or even a batarian instead of another asari or krogan.

Does everyone in your workplace have the same personality? /sigh, okay let me explain AGAIN. I know it doesn't necessarily mean they'll have the same personality. I have stated multiple times that I don't know for certain. Only that from the little I have heard/read from the characters in questions that I am afraid it's possible that Bioware will write them similarly. This thread is to discuss whether or not anyone else sees them similarities (I assume you don't and that is a good thing) and whether or not we can expect surprise beyond what we have seen so far.

I used a fair number in me2. Also a tiny squad heightens the chances you are going to have an even smaller pool of characters you like to rotate between.

I don't agree that these characters are a complete rehashing of previous ones.
Liam sounds far different from Jacob. He is young and enthusiastic, optimistic and apparently he's got a bit of a temper, and doesn't seem at all the type of hardcore, follow-the-rules man that Jacob was.
Peebee sounds nothing like Liara, who was a bit prim and proper or Tali, who was pretty much a person who also followed the rules and cared what others think of her. Neither Tali nor Liara came across as the free-wheeling Indiana Jones of the asari. Not to me, at least. And that's how I'm seeing Peebee. With a twist.
Cora. So she's military. She was also with a squad of asari commandos. Ash never did anything like that. She's also younger and second in command, unlike Ashley. There's some conjecture about her ties with TIM, though there's no confirmation. But her past will most likely be quite different from Ashley's as well, thus shaping them into different people.
Drack, well yeah. All krogan share certain characteristics, but Wrex still had a different personality than Grunt, so I expect the same from Drack.
Jaal. None of us know anything about him.
Truthfully, we don't know anything about any of them and won't until we get into the game. And I wish it would just get here already.

I dunno, I'd rather have a smaller cast of interesting characters than the squad bloat in ME2. How many did you actually regularly use there? I can get behind this. Very much for it actually. It's part of the reason I am afraid that the characters could turn out too similar from previous installments. The bit that I have seen so far nudges my suspicion in that direction. As far as the ME2 Bloat went, I didn't really feel it that much. I always picked the same two for the most part depending on what I was playing, well for combat anyway. I would then replay the game as someone different so I could get different combinations of squadmates together so I could hear their banter. Something I feel there was too large a lack of. In reality most of my interaction and came from just talking to them on the Ship. All we had were little snippets of banter when you brought them along and that wasn't enough to make me feel like I was missing out too much.

And here I thought a squad member was cut because they were too similar to a previous character. Thanks for setting me straight OP.

Honestly, almost all of that is just negative speculation on your part as we don't know anywhere near enough to come to any kind of judgement. Nothing wrong with being a pessimist but for the most part your complaint is a bit baseless. Bare in mind Bioware have stated that a 7th character was cut from the game because he was too similar to a previous character. That should be a pretty clear indication that they are doing their best to make our new squad mates 'new' and not just rehashes.

It's unfair to say that when we've yet to spend any time with them in-game. Nothing wrong with having reservations based on what you've seen, but let's not go so far as to call them out before we've played the game.

Well, you only need two squadmates to play the game, and I picked my two from the list so far. But with BiOWARE you could really be surprised by how charming or interesting a character can be compared to its summary file.

I hope I am wrong and everyone comes out with a nice unique personality make up that is distinct from previous games. What does everyone think? Can we expect some surprises or should we/I just temper my expectations? Partly, I hope they are off the stereotypes asigned to them! Maybe Drak is some kind of Okeer (as in: More than a Krogan who just shoots stuff) or at least like Wrex (as much as I liked Grunt - loved his loyalty and his trust "Shepard is my battlemaster, he/she has no equal!" - but in the end? He might have been the perfect Krogan (I disagree on that, I think Wrex is more perfect - why? Biotics! Grunt doesn't have any), but in the end he's just a Tank who shoots stuff and doesn't have any lofty goals or visions for the future of his race! Hell, his name alone shows that, he chose it because it's simple, uninspired etc.) Peebee at least seems closer to Matriarch Aethyta ("Let's make our own Mass Relays, lets explore new technologies etc. etc." - Unlike most stuffy Asari, especially the Matrons and Matriarchs, who all play "The long Game"...is it any wounder I prefer Asari Maidens like Liara (who still has dreams etc.)) than most other Asari, so I will probably like her (hope she makes me laugh a lot - as long as she can be serious when needed!) Liam? Hope he isn't Kaidan/Jacob/James 2.0 (his choice of weapon etc. seems uninspired...I kind of miss having some sniper companion or a crafty engineer like Tali ) Cora kind of reminds me of Miranda (which is not a bad thing, hell I would have no problem if she was artificially created (tailor made) like Miranda, as long as she's not suffering from "perfection syndrome" like Miranda, who's deeply insecure despite having tons of advantages compared to other humans! It would also explain why her biotics are on Jack's level or better (she can keep up with Asari Huntresses after all! Not something most humans can brag about!)), I kind of like her (ok: Her haircut could be nicer, but otherwise? Damned, I think she's hot!) Vetra hopefully is something new (sadly: Not a biotic, would have loved to see someone similar to Nyreen - especially as a permanent squadmate!), not the stereotypical Turian soldier who loves their military etc. (That's one of the reasons I liked Garrus, because he was not a stereotypical Turian! In fact he hated their mindless acceptance of the rules etc.) As for Jaal? Well, let's wait and see (we don't really know all that much about him, sadly!) greetings LAX ps: I agree with you OP that we could have had some more inspired squadmates...I'd have liked an other Ardat Yakshi (one that doesn't like killing, but doesn't want to be locked up either!) for example...maybe someone like Aethyta (an Asari who sees her species's flaws and wants to address them!) and I'd have loved a Salarian (female!) who isn't into politics and being the power behind the scenes ...hell, someone like Aria T'Loak would be fun, too

Liam is still pretty much an unknown, though his quote on the Mass Effect Character page sounds like something Jacob would say so I am basing my incredibly uninformed opinion off that and more to the point the similarities I see from others. Liara was prim and proper but more to the point you first meet her while she is literally doing Indiana Jones things. The free spirit sort of vibe is something I got from Tali. Cora seems like a career military person with a no nonsense sort of attitude. She may be very different, I honestly hope she is. Just from the snippets that we have she reminds me just a tad bit of Ashely. Again, we know so little that my worries could be waaaay off base. I am not honestly saying they ARE like some of the squad mates from previous games, just that I worry that they are and that what little I have seen leads me to believe that it's at least possible.
