Yeah I'm not too fired up by an engineer, but if he can work my heavy machinery, ooh la la.

There was so much I wanted to reply to but it took a while for the account to go through and those are now ancient comments. So I'll throw my hat in as another person anxiously awaiting some m/m goodness. I'm a Kaidan romancer who used the console command trick in ME1 so I get a longer love story and it does make me happy. Just hoping for someone I can fall in love with again. Shame Scott Ryder is the protag model, he's hot. If it's something you really want to say or reply to, go ahead What's the worst that can happen

Yeah, better then dead husband-is not a hard goal to meet usually. However, like some others it still makes me a bit worried as to what this purpose is. Personally, I think Cortez was given a husband so gamers would know right away that he was gay. It was meant to make them (slightly homophobic straight male gamers) feel comfortable and in control of the situation. "Oh, this guy is gay. I'm cool with gays. I'll like be nice to him and stuff and help him get over his husband." That way no "OOPS I ACCIDENTALY SLEPT WITH THE GAY GUY!" situation. (And yet some people still got ninjamanced by Kaidan; in their defense, I wouldn't have known giving him a bottle of whiskey was a romantic gesture unless I'd read about it first lmao) Same with Traynor. What is the first thing we learn about her when we meet her? She has a crush on EDI's voice. A GIRL VOICE. OH NO LESBIAN ALERT. Slightly homophobic straight gamer: "Oh, she must be a lesbian. I guess I can't get with her. Not a big deal I guess since she's not even on my squad. She seems cool though." So that was 2012. Here's hoping that things have progressed slightly in 2017. Gil Brodie's "purpose" hopefully won't have anything to do with his sexuality, and by that I meant, his purpose/quest/whatever won't just be there to "warn" straight gamers away from him. I think the problem with gay and lesbian romances is going to be always that, they are not target for LG gamers or at least the characters are less important and there is little care. So it goes from really awkward to really strange fast. I still do not get what happened with the Traynor bath scene, that one had some weird vibes.

Here's hoping gay and lesbian romances are better on that department, especially gay romances since they are lacking on the fanservice, since ever.

I play as a gay Shepard and yet the game still throws in lines in like that bath scene where Traynor implies you're looking at her boobs and EDI implies you're staring at her too. I love my extended mShenko story but it feels like a bit of afterthought in the larger context of the game with very little reference to it from NPCs. Characters that comment on romances don't have much to say about it. I think #Javik's line is for both Virmire Survivors. Edit: Nice Maggie avatar. So the game still assumes you're straight as you're actively playing a gay man through game mechanics? I must have mentally blocked that out. Stay classy, Bioware.

While I do agree that the game assuming an orientation and having the NPC characters treat you accordingly is annoying, I can understand why it happens. At least a little bit.
I mean, how is the game supposed to know what exact orientation your PC is supposed to be without some weird and awkward dialogue near the beginning of the game that has you specify, "I'm straight", "I'm gay", or "I'm bi" or some type of option during character creation where you specify it there?
None of the ways that I can think of to implement that type of check for player orientation would be good. Maybe someone else can do better, but I don't know.
I think the best course of action would be for Bioware to just make sure that whenever there is a situation involving some type of sexual attraction or sexual observation, that it comes as a result of player decisions and player agency rather than something like autodialogue.

Well, yeah. Gay players have been saying this for years now. And it's just good form from a roleplay perspective in general. If there's no strong plot reason to force a trait onto an RPG protagonist, don't do it. Idiotic.

The game is "supposed" to know by not having those kind of stupid things in there in the first place. But, assuming that would be "impossible" *flop* (that was the sound of my eyes rolling out of my skull), a super easy way to let the player self identify and adjust such minor* reactions in the game, would be to have a sort of history in the character creator that let's you pick some easy meaningless bits of info that would add rp flavor and this but not impact anything else for those who don't care about the rp part. As an example think of something similar to how you choose your psychological profile and background in the ME trilogy. It might even branch out of the background option (space, earthborn and colonist) and be "Past relationships of note: A. Male soldier in your first squad; B. Female soldier in your first squad" for spaceborn (or male/female worker for a colonist, etc etc). There's plenty of easy alternatives to the crass way Bioware ME team chose to do it in each of the trilogy games. But meh. Whatevs.

There are some occasions when it didn't really bother me honestly. Like in EDI's case, when she accuses you of staring I just kinda think of course I'm staring you're suddenly in a robot body. Then in Cerberus HQ where Shep comments on her voice that one just came of as a joke to me, with the line being the same for both Sheps.
Of course I doubt my perceptions are how it was intended to be perceived. Cuz sexy robot is sexy.

But meh. Whatevs. The game does have relationship flags for save file imports so it does "know" who you are and who your romances were with. Hell, they even wrote in a line of dialogue for a male Shepard that can only be accessed if importing a save where he romanced Kaidan in ME1. As to why they didn't have lines of dialogue to correspond to different combinations of gender and relationship flags...I guess they didn't realise? Probably. Though it's sad no one there was capable of pointing it out. Or some people pointed it out and no one else cared. Either way, it doesn't look good.

It's not even just an issue for gay characters. What if you're playing an asexual Shepard? Or a Shepard who's been true to Liara for three games and wouldn't be ogling someone else's tits? Or just a Shepard who's respectable and has some self control? It's very tasteless.
Though it is clearly a longstanding issue with gay players. Vampire: Bloodlines immediately makes the overt implication that you were turned during a sexual encounter with a woman. If you choose Dragon faction in Secret World you willingly get some kind of mystical blowjob from a hawt Asian chick in the tutorial. Fallout 3 assumes you're straight by omission of gay versions of sexuality related speech perks. I could go on. I'm really not militant about gay politics but don't invalidate my fucking roleplay, y'all.

Maybe, just maybe, EDI is joking about Shepard staring? Probably not but the option is possibly there. Vega thinking a lesbian Shepard is flirting with him makes sense because he's got an ego the size of his muscles, his big bulging muscles (I wish I could romance Vega) but the Traynor line is the odd one, it's not delivered jokingly and she's not that egotistical. Ditto on romancing Vega. I remember in the run-up to ME3's release, I saw Vega and heard FPJ was voicing him and naturally assumed he would be a romance option. I never once thought he would be bi or gay, but I was more than willing to role a FemShep to experience the story play out. And then he dares to work out and grunt in front of me and then not offer up the goods?! As Javik would say, "toss him out the airlock." But seriously, I quite enjoyed Vega's personality. It's similar to what I want in a m/m romance in Andromeda; someone competent and put-together, but who still knows how to have fun. Sarcastic. Cocky, but in a charming way. Very loyal and protective of those he cares about. And a nice bod and sexy accent helps too .

The Vega romance in the Citadel DLC is the most uncomfortable thing I've ever watched, really shows the danger of letting your Shepard get thirsty.

Admittedly we know very little about Reyes, but I'm very meh about him because the last m/m option they gave us with a Spanish accent was stereotypically 'spicy' and flamboyant. The cheesy 'colour of your eyes' line doesn't help. Give me masculine, with a strong side serving of goofy and bashful and I'm down. We'll see.

I dislike the whole assuming the player is hetero too, I hate talking with Jacob in ME2 for that reason alone. When there is suppose to be romances that gives maybe hints you are at least not straight? I well I hope ME:A fairs better but my hopes are not great in this department. Also thank you I actually made the avatar. Yeah as I said the game does "know" these things, but there just aren't dialogue triggers for these specific flags. The closest there is for a gay Shepard is if you use the console command to access m/m romance with Kaidan there is a recording line where Shepard says "I'm only interested in men" they acknowledge the romance in one line of dialogue on Mars but that's it. The femshep/ashley romance from ME1 using the same trick just ceases to exist in 3 and I guess asari don't count as women enough for it to count? You'd think if a woman romancing an asari didn't make her a lesbian or bisexual they would have made the asari more androgynous in appearance but hey. That's cool. I really like the Maggie/Alex stuff this season, it feels very genuine and heartwarming. That is why I think they have the resources to do it but they just did not follow through with it, for some reason and oh yes, the famous justification they gave of asari not counting for a lesbian Shepard was wild. Idk, this is why I am skeptical when it comes to Mass Effect and LIs. Oh man this season is being great! Maggie/Alex all the way!

I prefer to pretend that doesn't exist haha. Some... interesting choices made with that one
