So since I'm in need of cheering up since my Jaalmancer got the letter from Gil inviting him to meet the hellbeast... What would YOU have given Gil as a story instead? I mentioned some pages ago, I would have focused on how he runs himself ragged on the Tempest as a psychological justification for coming to Andromeda - since he's a 'live in the moment, go with his gut' type of person, he's having second thoughts about having joined the Initiative, but that's a decision he can't undo, so he throws himself into working on and upgrading the Tempest, so that it can do things that no one ever anticipated or expected it to, be of greater use to the Pathfinder, and just basically provide something that only he, Gil Brodie, could have done - basically provide his arc as a mirror of Kallo's. Ultimately leading to Ryder telling him that all he needs is Gil, specifically.
Doesn't he say at one point he likes to keep himself busy so he doesn't have to think about "real" stuff too much? Or....something like that.

Yup. I think he feels if he stops for any serious amount of time, it's going to come crashing down on him. He's afraid, very afraid, which we can imply from his workaholic attitude and his need to feel safe as seen in his sex scene. I think there's also an element of not wanting to be a burden on others, which is why he fudges reports and busts ass to complete work so he can at least give the image to the others that things are fine (with everything not just himself). Yet he also takes on waaayyy too much burden (again working hours). |

The gil face was remade already with great accuracy. I recorded the Jaal lake scene with him for science. It was pretty odd seeing Gil hooking up with Jaal, and even odder with Scott's voice coming out of Gil's body.

So, I completed the Jaal romance (and got my platinum trophy by doing so), and while I think it was generally well done, I've decided to stick with Gil as my canon. I got attached to him when it was just Gil vs Reyes. Plus I prefer to stick with humans anyway.
That is why I think I can say that, even though I've decided to stick with Gil, I still think making Jaal an option was the smarter use of resources, simply because of the issues that existed outside the question of which specific options we prefer.

I'm not surprised in the least that this happened when they decided to make Jaal bi, but I was foolishly hoping it wouldn't, and so am disappointed and will continue to be. Jaal should have been bi from the start, on that I fully agree, but it doesn't change any of Gil's problems. |

I think one of the biggest complains is about the lack of gay squadmate and people consistently bringing up the trophy issue where they require 3 romances. It's less resource intensive to get 2 actors instead of 3 actors back and less scenes having to be redone. Fixing Gil and Reyes also still wouldn't give Scott a unique face or a squadmate. Plus, Jaal is arguably more popular than the other two looking at related number of posts, how big his following is, as well as the big twitter tag. Changing Gil may even require them to bring back contest winner to re-record Jill. It's more of an easy way out as well as satisfy the most number of people by making Jaal bi. This whole game, no, this whole series has been a big mess when it comes to gay characters. All the way from ME1 to MEA. I still can't believe how they honestly think it's acceptable to not give us a squadmate and half ass contents like that after only doing a half ass contents with ME3. If they make another ME game, I really wonder if they really learn their lesson after 4 games or pull this crap once again. The whole controversy really killed a lot of my interests in this game. |

I mean, I've tweeted to the developers countless times now and haven't heard a word about ANYTHING in relation to Gil, so it's obvious what they're concerned about. And yeah, I know that I'm one person and they get dozens of tweets every single day directed at them, but since the movement focused on Jaal, they did what they needed to there, so now the crowd has died off, and they can dismiss anyone addressing anything else so casually. And it sucks because as evidenced here... Gil's got a popular following. This is the largest character thread following Jaal's. And while a bunch of that is us bitching back and forth on the subject, this still counts, because we're passionate about him. But instead, he's going to be left with this homophobic mess that those of us who love him and want to romance him absolutely HATE. And instead of even remotely listening when we say 'this is messed up, this needs to be fixed,' they're not going any further than 'hey, according to the metrics, people are romancing him, he must be just fine.' When they don't listen that we're romancing him IN SPITE of his story, not because of it. |

Wow, I left for a couple weeks and this thread is almost at 500 posts. Amusing.
I still haven't forged the will to replay this game, because I initially wanted to replay as Sara and romance Vetra.. but knowing Gil's situation I find myself uncomfortable when not romancing him which is a strange turn for me. I had similar feelings about Inquisition, but in a different sense.
In Inquisition I started out as an Elven Female Mage, and of course I couldn't resist the call of our beautiful Cullen. And after that I found that it felt strange not to play an Elven mage, or even an elf in general. Mainly due to the heavy amount of elf related content thrown at you, especially when I replayed as the same character for the Solas romance.
So I feel like starting out on his romance, much like playing an elf mage in DA:I, I sort of stole away part of the experience and internally limited myself. Knowing the situation I was stuck in this metagaming mindset of knowing exactly what will happen to him if I don't romance him, and how his whole "BFF" situation is set up.. I couldn't bring myself to replay the game. I'm aware that it's a strange hang up, but it's how I feel.
