What is the thing in the middle of the starmap?

My first thought also was that it is a black hole. However, I think Minius might actually have had this theory in one of his videos, but it makes sense that it might be a Remnant artificial construct! They obviously do something with gravity manipulation (the gravity-well scene in one of the trailers, falling down the vault gravity-elevator in the new "Exploration" video, etc) so it makes sense that it could have something to do with the Remnant, as well as potentially explaining why they aren't around anymore and why the species in the Helius (sp?) Cluster are not millions of years more advanced than the MW aliens (although there are other viable explanations as well). Could that also be why the habitable worlds we are looking for are oddly less than inhabitable?

Maybe the Remnant found a gateway to a parallel universe; and that's where the next installment in the series will be set: You thought a new galaxy was too radical! How about new Universe! And then in the following game, we'll move on to the universe in which our original universe and the new universe were mere simulations. We'll hop out of the simulation and become real, like Moriarty breaking free from the Holodeck.

We already know that the final mission will involve that, right?

Helios Cluster is starting to look to me like a dwarf galaxy that was captured by Andromeda's gravity.

It's hard to say without any grasp of the relative size of Helios. Star cluster are considered dwarf galaxies when they amass over 100 million stars orbiting their cores. It's big but i'm not sure it's quite that big. Every star cluster and galaxy gets eaten up by larger ones eventually, even pairs of regular-sized galaxies supposedly crash and merge together all the time according to Galactic waltz theories which try to explain some of the larger ones.

It's no coincidence that a 600-year journey to another galaxy ends up right at that thing's doorstep!

It's where the Kett Base is. We'll have to travel there on a suicide mission through the Remnant-built Alpha-4 Translocation Array
