anyone play me3mp volus? why couldnt he have all the protection of someone in actual cover?
i dont like the 'slamming my back against a wall' animation, a slide-in animation would be more fluid and probably faster.
ME1 had the ability to crouch and walk at will.
edit: dont want the one-button-does-all but PC players should have an option to key it to whatever they want with the automatic on a separate on/off toggle... there's really no reason not to.

I love it when someone tries to troll, only to find out that people actually agree with their post as if it was serious.
I'm fucking thrilled that cover is automatic. I play with a controller so the alternatives are to waste a button on cover when they are already struggling to map every function, or cram it onto a button that is already used for something else (a la ME3). Neither option is particularly appealing IMO.

Definitely better than the cover being mapped to the same key as about 20 other mechanics. Yes, mapping control of the action to no button is infinitely better.

Automatic cover is ridiculous. I wanted the button that has like 5 functions tied to it so that when you push it, you never know what you're going to do. Whatever you do though, it's guaranteed to be something awesome.

If I remember correctly, Mass Effect (the first, the one without a number) had automatic cover. I never had to press the super-hyper-ultra-multifunction button (a.k.a. "almighty" space bar) to get cover; I only had to dash against a wall, rock or whatever.

Using one for taking cover might be a bit awkward, but it was a bit unecessary using both sticks for the same function.

I just hope there's enough cover to be able to use the mechanic. Thanks goodness chest-high walls actually spawn prior to combat in the gameplay videos. Without that, how would I know when to fight?
....
Omni-button cover wasn't so bad, you just had to make sure you were looking at the right thing prior to using, which discourages button mashing. The auto-cover system will have it's pros and cons as well. The pessimist in me says more cons but we'll see once people start playing.

I'm looking forward to trying it out. I can see it's advantages and disadvantages, however with more powers and abilities being mapped to the controller I see the necessity for this kind of change.
And it will probably be better than those "shit shit shit shit shit" moments of ME3MP when you are trying to take cover and instead vault into a phantom, or are trying to get out of cover and instead get glued to a wall next to a Banshee, or go to revive and instead somersault into a Brute.
Good times...

this is a great design decision for the game. it makes sense not to have any control over this feature. when it comes to the cover mechanic, it's always best to make it automatic and involuntary. this will work especially well for multiplayer and in bits where the gameplay is quick I loved magnetic cover in ME3MP, it always made running around so exciting.

The left stick was used to move and the right stick was used to turn/look. If you used either of them for another function your entire movement system was screwed. Unless you're talking about L3 and R3, which were 180 turn and navigation respectively in ME3 (and probably will be sprint and melee in MEA).

Its hard to say until you get a hands on. I like to run and gun and play a little erratically. Last thing I want is magnet cover when I'm trying to run by and get out of danger.
I'm also curious how it impacts the MP.
I never had much issue with the omni-button in a sense. Cover/sprint/dodge on one never really bothered me. The only thing I didn't like was having interact on the same key.

My only concern would be if the cover you go to has bad camera angles. I have seen that problem before, so I hope the environments are drawn so we don't get that problem or the game is smart enough to truly adjust properly when in cover.
