this is a great design decision for the game. it makes sense not to have any control over this feature. when it comes to the cover mechanic, it's always best to make it automatic and involuntary.
this will work especially well for multiplayer and in bits where the gameplay is quick

Seems like hardly any games have a good cover system, I think auto-cover is the way to go.

Definitely better than the cover being mapped to the same key as about 20 other mechanics.

Bioware'so response to right hand advantage seems a bit extreme i agree completey. they bring back right hand advantage, sweeten the pot by throwing in left hand advantage too...then they go and ruin it all with this automatic cover!! that's some grade A trolling. i cant decide whether to cry or scream

Auto cover is better than the alternative when its done well. Especially now that they're making movement so much smoother.

I think it will be annoying. I never had a problem with the cover system in ME1 but I did enjoy the clunky system in ME1, but the way this looks is almost too vague. I can easily see myself taking hits because I didn't notice Ryder went out of cover at some point.

Dear cover,
Please understand, I believe you believe you are performing a necessary function. I am here to tell you: you are not. You are not wanted. You are not loved. All you are is in.the.way. Leave your key on the counter before you go. And don't bother calling, I'm having the number changed tomorrow.
Sincerely, Vanguards everywhere.

Actually, several times in ME2 (probably in ME3) I died due to lame cover issues, such as meaning to stand up and instead vaulting forward -> death. I won't miss cover-type mistakes from past games.

I can't understand how anyone has issue with dynamic cover systems. It's like people hate having mobility or something. The only thing I've seen so far that has me a little worried due to taking the time required to get used to it is the distance we have to be for are characters to use auto-lean mechanics when close to cover. I'm also rather confident that's why some reviewers have said it felt finicky.
BioWare has said its similar to Last of Us which is a false statement, or well not an entirely proper one. It's closer to Tomb Raider but has Last of Us distance triggers? If that makes any sense. Basically, Tomb Raider has a great dynamic cover system but Lara will automatically duck rather far away from cover, you don't have to squish your self against the wall. Literally 5-6 feet from low cover and she practically glues her butt to the floor.
Last of Us on the other hand uses auto-lean mechanics like a good bit of FPS use now and days (Crysis, Fallout 4 for examples). But you had to manually duck if you wanted to hunker down behind low cover. Andromeda seems to be an odd combo of the 2 where you have to be very close to cover (last of us) for it to trigger the learn out mechanics, but the game auto crouchs you like Tomb Raider (except you have to be super close for it).
That part, the being super close, is why I think people felt it was glitchy. Because if your not used to it, don't fully understand it, theres a good chance when you move right/left you'll pull slightly back on your sticks (or have an angle on your look with mouse/keys) that causes you to pull away from cover as you strafe causing you to stand up when you back out of the duck range. All of which is easily avoided by ensuring your pressing forward while you strafe, or angle the stick slightly forward while you strafe.
That is ultimately the part I think people will have trouble getting used to, but is a minor thing in the long run. Cover systems like this, as far as I'm concerned, a far superior to sticky/snap covers. I just vastly value mobility over being forced into an alternate mode of movement for the sake of a cover system.
Hell there still using snap cover animations for cover which I think is kinda amusing. They make no sense to begin with (shoving your back against a wall) but at least there is that visual shift in your characters idle stance to let you know that hey, your engaged with the cover/lean mechanics so blind fire and popping out with your aim key is a thing. Ducking is, of course, just as obvious vs you standing.
edit: Also 'taking control' away from players? That's kinda a bullshit guys. They're just removing the snap portion OF the cover. Of which DOES take actual control away from players. You have more control now then you did in past games, shit. Now, not being able to manually duck? That part kinda sucks dick, but that's been in the past games anyway so... no real loss for the series. Just one of those oddball choices.

I can easily see myself taking hits because I didn't notice Ryder went out of cover at some point. If you've played Metal Gear Solid 5, cover should work similarly. Which is fine by me since MGS5 had a pretty solid cover system.

I wanted the button that has like 5 functions tied to it so that when you push it, you never know what you're going to do.

Automatic cover is ridiculous. I wanted the button that has like 5 functions tied to it so that when you push it, you never know what you're going to do. And one of them has to be the revive button in MP. Honestly I got by fine just by pressing the A button and seeing what happened. Sorry friend, looks like you're out until the next round!
