I agree but the aesthetics are important and they were fucking gorgeous in ME123, even 1 which has those empty and unarchitectured environments. The biggest stinker about some of the Andromeda footage seen so far if I'm looking at it as a picture is that some areas look completely flavorless and flat. I'm not talking about the nexus because it's supposed to have that clinical look like the Citadel but some places like the docking area look like something out of friggin SWTOR. What happened here? And oh noooo. "Go to the bar, Vortex, where there's singing". (paraphrased) fucking singing. Enough already. Stop pandering to your friggin cosplaying, geeky (and words I will refrain from using) fanbase. Sometimes I'm reminded that I'm not really the fan BioWare is targeting, no, I feel like I'm excluded and not because I'm the critical sort but because I don't send friggin fan-art or vocal covers like it's the only thing they care for. People that actually cared about Mass Effect for different reasons than fan-art-able characters and inclusive romance options. Ugh. "Sera was never an agreeable girl..."

Gameplay and Story >>>>>>>>>> Graphics.Great graphics don't make a great. Everyone's heard that at least once. It's one of the cardinal rules of gaming. No not rule, more like wisdom. Actually scratch that, more like common sense. But boy are people willing to just toss that into the wind when it comes to Bioware games. Everyone else gets a pass. But Bioware? Fuck them. While true to a certain extent, Bioware appears to have regressed on character design. Characters in ME:A look worse than those in DA:I, and ME:A is created entirely for newer hardware. It's entirely possible that they didn't have the budget for the characters to look as good as the rest of the game. I don't know, I wasn't there during the 5 years of development. But the facial animations are so far down the list of what I care about the game. Horizon didn't have good facial animations a lot of the time. Did that even mean a damn? People seem to be loving the game, so I guess not.

Writers like it I guess, so it was an easy way to just get something in there, pssh. IDK They can insert their r/WritingPrompts there maybe if that's the sort of talent working there now. "[WP]: It's 1956 and the world feels the ramifications of the Cold War... BUT, an inventor has just finished the design of a futuristic refrigerator that can time-travel."

When your AAA game relies heavily on storytelling and characters and those characters facial expressions are really fucking strange it's an issue. There's no clear delineation between storytelling and "graphics" when the highly emotional person confronting you is reminiscent of a marionette.

I'd bet a whole credit chit that the remnant is to Alec Ryder, like the Protheans are to Liara. I feel like Alec is studying ancient remnant technology and culture to do...something. It shows as a quest title "The Ryder Family Secret" and I'm willing to bet Alec's got some dirty laundry. Maybe SAM and the pathfinder implants are in some way connected to remnant technology Alec retrofitted and tinkered with. The line Liara says about it being hard studying a dead species when you have no observable examples is what made me really think of this. I doubt Liara will make a "personal" appearance but I love the idea of her published thesis and dissertations and crap Alec is using to study, being easter eggs. Despite all that, however, after seeing that club, I have only one question. Can Ryder dance? hmmmm

Whatever is this supposed to mean? Yeah, sure, Drake looks good but it's a fallacy to compare anything Uncharted does to RPGs like Mass Effect. You can compare it to Witcher or Bethesda games and maybe Horizon (which really is more of an action game I'd say) but you're reaching to draw comparisons to UC4. Also, a guy on NeoGAF brought up a good point in that the lip sync isn't that bad in the latest trailer for Andromeda but the eyes look completely hollow as if BioWare put way more priority into lip-sync than the soulless eyes (which were the problem in the first place with Sara for example) which is the opposite of what good animators would do. Look at Life is Strange. Lip sync did actually get patched which I never got to see but when i played it was TERRIBLE but I didn't mind it at all because the eyes had a proper connection in them. And fuck... am I seriously comparing BioWare , a big AAA division of EA to Dontnod on their animation quality? Life is Strange is a glorified Telltale styled game. Jesus christ. I hope BioWare can patch a complete overhaul of those dead-eye stares into MEA in half a year (I seriously want them to drop an entire story DLC plan just to get this done). If NPCs commonly look as hollow as that gal on the Nexus I'm seriously contemplating on just waiting to play this game entirely. I can't put up with that stuff for an entire game without coming out feeling underwhelmed, and I wanna be impressed.

I'm not comparing Uncharted to Mass Effect, I'm just pointed out how insanely good it's facial animations are. I am starting to get a little concerned about them. Like you said to me the issue is the lifeless eyes and total lack of emotion. It's not a deal breaker but I think in 2017 we should expect better. The Turian they showed looked pretty good but that woman's eyes where borderline scary. In a game where expressing emotion is important I think we should have better facial expression.

Addison in the Nexus Tour trailer is probably the one in only time I didn't like the facial animations shown in ME:A's footage. Mainly because the emotions she was conveying didn't match her face. It really was the eyebrows. That need to be animated more imo. Hopefully it'll look better during release.

But gamers, being the reactionary bunch they are, are making it out to be way worse than it actually is.

I recognized her as the one in the exploration video immediately due to her incredibly overdone makeup... Like... why? However, I never would have guessed it was Foster Addison. Originally, she looked like this: Completely different hair colour and eye colour, not to mention the lack of makeup. Also, maybe the eyes would look better if they didn't look so surprised at all times? Foster is 34 years older than in that profile picture, remember, that the Nexus arrived decades ahead of Hyperion. What? When was this confirmed? I know Hyperion makes contact late, but it can't take that long. The characters have not aged that much, and how likely is it they wouldn't have ecountered the Kett or Angaara in all that time? Take Foster and Sloane: Foster looks the same age in both shots, she was just redesigned. People don't get brown hair when they age, they get grey hair, and they don't change eye colour. And Sloane looks identical before and after the trip.

You know, the thing that bothers me most about this one is that I think they literally just borrowed the animation algorithms from DA:I or maybe the animators because there's the same sense of heavy flapping lips here.

Agreed, what's sad is the more I look at it the more I realize the detail in her face is actually pretty good. Not Nathan Drake good but still good. Seems like the potential is there for better animations and more lively eyes. I'm just getting skeptical this can be fixed in a patch.

It can't be fixed as if it's a bug. It needs a "the hand of god" as Armando Troisi would call it. An animator has to touch it up as they would in the more key scenes but I think it's her face as well. First step is animating her eyes because they have no emotion in them right now. Angle the brows, make her stop rocking back and forth like that, it looks super creepy as if she's in a trance, and maybe open her eyes less, just slightly.
I also think the skin complextion looks like shit tbh and what's up with her almost greenish skin tint and blue eye shadow? Ugh. The eyes are just terrible too, the iris and the eyeball 3D models I mean. You can just tell, something isn't looking the way it should there.

I feel like if they just had better eye textures it wouldn't stand out as much. I've been playing horizon zero dawn the last few days, and it's animation issues don't stand out nearly as much due to the eyes looking so alive.
Not really a big issue for me overall, but def has room for improvement.

I thought the animations in the intro footage were pretty good: I think if anything, the vast majority of poor animations are gonna come from NPCs. I think it's way more important for central characters, which given what I saw from the intro, they look pretty solid. Especially Scott. He looks really good, and very emotive.
