I think subnautica players might have something to say for underwater. I know underwater worlds only from sim backgrounds. I'd like alpine mountain regions. Yeah but Subnautica is more an exception to the rule than anything else. Beautiful biomes aside (blood kelp forest was my fav), one of the big reasons why it worked was because the controls actually felt fluid and the environment was for more than just show. Which makes sense since that was basically the entire game. Underwater portions in other games are mostly just side forays, with the devs only putting an understandable amount of limited effort into making them. It looks nice, the movement suffices, and the enemy (if there is one) is probably going to be a shark, squid or a variant therein. Or time. The ever-common and dreaded enemy of limited time. There's a part of me that wants to give newer games a chance in these underwater sections since technology really is coming a long way, but I've just been burned too many times when it comes to underwater sections. So let's just say I won't shed any tears if DA4 has no underwater portion to speak of... Yeah, it's one thing to build an entire game around the concept of an underwater environment, it's another to have a brief diversion into an underwater environment that requires a whole new set of gameplay rules and assets that won't be used elsewhere. That's why, as you say, underwater content in other games tends to be lacking.

I liked the underwater part of Manaan in KOTOR. That's probably the best Bioware ever did underwater exploration (Leviathan being the prettiest though).

So many people here saying they don't recall any underwater missions? What about ME3's DLC Leviathan? It's more that extensive underwater adventures are rare in RPGs. Most are brief forays for as long as the protag can hold their breath. Even Leviathan is what... 2 min of actual underwater "exploration"? The rest being dialogue and cutscenes. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem likely in any case, if Jon Renish's comments during his recent DA:O PT is any indication. On the underwater concept art, it should not be interpreted as a promise of gameplay. Ah, so you're thinking more open world underwater content? Meh. Dry land or underwater, open world is not something I'd enjoy regardless of environment. So burnt out with open worlds. Now that I think of it, open world underwater would be such a headache. It would be many more planes to move around in while juggling fetch quests. ME3 Leviathan had just the right amount of content I think. Yeah?

My (admittedly pie-in-the-sky) wish would have been to have an entire underwater region to explore with smaller segments in other regions of the game. Tropical waters, lots of colour, verticality, sea life, sea monsters, some ancient elven site to explore, throw in a couple of small islands, sandy beaches, maybe access to the Deep Roads, etc., etc. It'd be an interesting change of pace, and as I said, not many RPGs get into extensive underwater exploration.

I have one minor environment pet peeve in AC: Valhalla that I'm hoping DA will avoid.
Outdoors, the ambient lighting rotates between brighter and dimmer as though clouds were constantly passing in front of the sun, regardless of what's actually going on with the weather. I've seen this in other games as well. It makes the world feel that much more artificial, as you can tell the yo-yo-ing ambient lighting is working off a schedule, not "reality".

I like this one for the tall ships making their way through a narrow canal in a city. That's a pretty striking visual no matter where you were to view it (or onboard for that matter). I like this picture. I just wish the artist had added the adjacent towpath and draft animals needed to get ships that size through a canal. And while on the topic of boats, maybe a substitute where appropriate? Eg. Something built on the back of a Thedasian hippo to navigate through dense wetlands. Much as bogfishers wouldn't look out of place in that picture, I hope there exists a wetland mount which is less stampede prone than bogfishers. Didn't we have art of those dinosaur/tortoise thingies? I'm also trying to think of interesting things to see in a wetland environment. An animal colony/nest? I liked that spot in - I think it was - Emprise du Lion where you got to play Arthur to Nimue by finding that sunken statue holding a sword. So I could go for more statues of female heads rising from waters. Something tranquil like the grey female elf head model that ended never used would work well. I'm also curious to see if the next DA proves to be the game in which we get this Mass Effect aquarium Easter egg: We come across a little pond with a bunch of dead fish in it. When clicked, we get a sign that says "It seems someone forgot to buy an Aquarium VI/feed the fish." Given the number of temples and chantries we've visited, it started to bug me how little ritual music and musical instruments there have been (compared to religious art). If we can hunt bottles or mosaics, couldn't we also try putting together an ancient instrument as a quest. I did some digging and apparently stone instruments are among oldest in the world (bone flutes seem to be the oldest). I'd heard since Origins that the stone sings to dwarves but I hadn't known that certain stones (e.g. some stalactites, limestone and jade) produce a sound when struck. Instuments made of this kind of stone are called lithophones and include Vietnamese đan đa and Chinese bianqing. Some of the pillars in the Hampi temple, India, are also made of resonant stone. So even if I'm not a particularly musical person, I think it would cool to come across a stone instrument and, instead of the often used Tower of Hanoi minigame, have us put it together in the correct "do-re-mi-fa..." scale. Stalactites
Vietnamese stone xylophone
Music pillars of Hampi
Chinese bianqing, skip to 3:14 if you just want to hear what it sounds like.

Didn't we have art of those dinosaur/tortoise thingies? I don't think we have concept art for those, just that distant view from the trailer. An ankylosaurus would definitely make for a fun mount. Another fun way to go is a stilt-legged mount, but perhaps one large enough to accommodate the entire party. I know silt-striders are a thing, but there are different directions to go here.

While not likely to be applicable to DA, at least in the near term, I thought this was an interesting example of a procedurally-generated forest. Largely to see how the tech is coming along these days. Procedurally-generated worlds would be something I'd expect in a future ME game. They experimented with the idea in MEA, so we know it's on their minds.

See, this is why we need a pack of trained nugs in DA. It's not even a want anymore. We need a decent sized Nug-pack to scour the landscape of its resources for us. Y'know, put little baskets on them... give them little hammers and chisels to chip out that silverite. I think I'm onto something here...

Since we're most likely visiting coast and - hopefully - water won't be the deadliest thing in Thedas, I hope for shallow waters, maybe with small islands here and there, that you can traverse without actually swimming. Also, lagoons.
