Frostbite has opened up so many new avenues for BioWare for environments. DAI obviously did a fantastic job, especially with the sheer variety of environments, colour palettes, lighting, and background music (the first thing I think of with the Western Approach is the music tied with it). DICE has pushed the envelope even further with Photogrammetry and even more fidelity in their environments. So I'm wondering what sorts of environments and/or landscape features would you like to see in a future game that we haven't seen from them yet?I had a similar thread during the run-up to DAI (which actually proved surprisingly prophetic!) and I'm just going to ramble off ideas as they come to me... First up... Underwater.
Dragon Age has never dabbled in underwater environments yet, but with magic it would not be unreasonable to think you could have an extended underwater quest. And really, I can't think of an RPG which has really done an impressive underwater segment. Obviously, coming up with underwater gameplay is going to be no small hurtle. Companion pathing would be no small issue either, and you might want to restrict it to just the protagonist. But it has the potential be a segment that really sets DA apart from the crowd. Here's some interesting images I ran across. You have lots of potential ways to go from tropical paradise, to ominous underwater caves, to fantastical underwater cities. Also, the idea of a giant, magically contained aquarium might be interesting touch for Tevinter Noble's estate... - Okay, yeah... this one's ice, but I like the colour and irregular shape to it.

Not sure about actual underwater, but it could be pretty awesome if done right, if they could pull off the cave with the streaming water though, in a tropical location, that would be awesome, might fit well in Seheron.
I'd prefer no deserts though, I find them largely boring, but thats just my personal preference. I would like to see something more abmitious, perhaps almost alien or otherworldy. Bizarre flora and unusually coloured plant life.

The only game I remember which had underwater was the Harry Potter Goblet of Fire one. I'd bought the game but hadn't played it yet until after I'd seen the film. I remember watching the film scenes in the Black Lake and Harry being attacked by Gridylows and I was thinking to myself -"Oh, no. I'll have to fight them in the game." Yep

Though if they did want to go that route - say, visit The Hundred Pillars, I hope they really change it up. Perhaps more Bryce Canyon-ish or something with more unusual topography... And I'd also love to see another region where it just stops you in your tracks and makes you go, "What the...?" like The Wellspring in Descent.

What DA:I lacks most sorely is clearly marked, easy to find roads, that lead directly from point A where you are to Point B where you desperately needed to be fifteen minutes of increasingly hopeless wandering ago. I vote for environment with a reasonable, well-maintained and functioning infrastructure. A shop that sells complete maps of Thedas will also be of an interest to me. Alternatively, a companion owning a flying carpet sitting four will be my top pick for the best companion ever.

Well - an actual, fully developed city would be nice. Or even a mid-sized town. Definitely keen on the under water idea. Or maybe an archipelago. Water dominated area (that you can either sail on top of, or swim underneath) with multiple small islands, some rocky and utterly impassable, some with a pleasant sandy beach and a helpful shady tree. All of this, of course, framed by the dynamic weather and day/night cycle

Environment? CITIES. URBAN. As long as there is a great large huge gargantuan colossal amount of city environment the rest is whatever, put us inside a volcano or the outer space, as long as there are cities we are fine. What they should never ever do again is DAI's lack o cities, that is retarded, anythin else, really, is ok.

And I'd also love to see another region where it just stops you in your tracks and makes you go, "What the...?" like The Wellspring in Descent. Yeah, different topography and more imaginative environments would be a big improvement over DA:I's open world maps, which, despite some variation in elevation (which was as often annoying as it was interesting to explore) Where kinda tame and "safe" in their design. The Images you got there are some nice ideas for the kinda direction I'd like to see the next installment go. I think this was more of a result of the effort to create the illusion of open world gameplay in DA:I. We had environments created first that were later filled out with odds and ends. I'd very much be in favour of doing away with that approach, getting rid of the vast open environments full of not much of actual substance and having somewhat smaller locations, more fleshed out in detail, with clear paths for primary exploration and offshoots for free roaming and exploring about the place, that are not so obvious, for the more intrepid gamer. Smaller more focused maps with a wider variation in style and topography as Hrungr mentioned, would help the next games environments leave a positive impact on those that played them. ^^This, a million Times This!!^^ I want a real city to sink my teeth into, let that be the primary focus, with clusterings of interesting and prominent locations orbiting the main city (figuratively speaking, although this is Tevinter, hehe) and the narrative. It's one thing I liked in DA:2, helped the story feel grounded and kept pacing and momentum in the game optimal.

Underwater? F--k yeah! But you know, first we have to get swimming in the ol' movement toolbox ...
I'd settle for on-water: pirate ships ahoy!
+1 on urban.
+1 on enough deserts already.
Even though EdL is one of my favorite maps of all time, I'm over snow and cold.
How about a treehouse village in the jungle? Ewoks meet Morrowind kind of thing. Okay, yes, like JoH, but more jungly.
How about a huge, huge castle/city, like Gormenghast or Minas Tirith? Where you spend most of your time climbing walls and outer buttresses? Real acrophobia stuff.

I'm hoping we'll get a chance to see at least a couple of districts in Minrathous. Hopefully, as a city built by mages, it'll be the architectural wonder it should be. Magic propping up a city in slow decline should make for some interesting visuals... At the same time, it'd be great to have some rural Tevinter towns/villages to contrast... And ships/boats! Naturally, with suitably impressive vistas and navigational challenges...

For my 2 cents, cities was the first thing that sprung to mind for me, too. Specifically a large, detailed Minrathous. I don't think I'll ever be quite over the disappointment that was the Summer Bazaar when we could have had more actual Val Royeaux. I'd also be cool with smaller towns as well, like Qarinus or something. But a load screen-worthy Minrathous, yes please. Also, I like the idea of underwater areas, but not swimming. lol The magical looking building with a fountain you posted in the OP looks like it could easily be some elven getaway with a few tweaks. Eluvians can go practically anywhere and there could be a hideaway like that in some kind of magic bubble underwater somewhere. Maybe something belonging to Ghilly, since she is credited with making (and keeping) sea monsters (which for all we know means anything from blue whales to krakens). The barrier around/throughout such a place could double as an aquarium wall and we could see cool things. I always think of this scene from Prince of Egypt when this kind of idea comes up: I love marine life and underwater environments, so that could be cool. I don't know how fun swimming itself would be, though.

I too think that the decaying splendour would be the route to go with Minrathous, hopefully not too roman in it's designs as I feel thats been done to death.
