While I agree with this some games have made decisions you made 30 hours of play time ago count against you or lock you out of content you wanted to see. Luckily Bioware hasn't done much of that to my knowledge. Bioware games in the past always allowed you to pursue multiple relationships and be forced to an ultimatum while in the TW3 if you did that and thought an ultimatum was going to happen you probably got fucked (well not literally poor Geralt xD). Hah Yeah, did that for my first playthrough as I heard it didn't turn out well. Figured I might as well see it for my self. Also figured I'd do multiple playthroughs but Witcher games usually don't have the same draw for multiple playthroughs for me sadly. Finally got around to a 2nd one just recently due to wanting to get the DLC finally played before MEA hits. Either way that's different then finding out an NPC you want happens to only prefer the opposite gender. Ahh, or Aveline. Tried to romance her in DA2. Was disappointed I couldn't, was happy with the outcome though. Helped her get with that just as blind subordinate she had the hots for lol. I think they did a good job with that one, letting you flirt, watching it get completely ignored (didn't even register) then having a little love plot you could help with. Beats having to tell Zevran no, and watching him turn into some middle schooler and losing a ton of points regardless of if you even flirted back or not. That was always irritating. Liked having him in the group but if you talk to him eventually you have to say no and it always goes the same way. -.-

I could think of a few reasons for wanting to know. Some just want to know there are options for them before they even consider buying the game. For others its time, not everyone have the chance to replay Andromeda over and over to see it all and try it all. Want that first playthrough to count and bring it forward into DLC's (that might add more romance content). Thing is this in no way has any effect on you, so it shouldn't really matter, no?

Just because you don't care about their sexual preferences doesn't mean other can't. I tried to woo Samantha Taylor only to find out she was lesbian and I wasted my time. Everyone has different views of how they view spoilers and if you don't want spoilers, I'd suggest going on blackout. The moment I found out I remember saying out loud I'm "dumb, she's a lesbian" and preceded to play Pink Triangle by Weezer I the background every time I spoke to her to laugh it off. I always think of her when I hear that song now

Because I don't want to play a certain Ryder if the options for them aren't appealing e.g. if a certain orientation only gets NPC romances.

Seeing spoil as spoiling the fun is not the case for everyone.
Some see spoil as unraveling information, and make the game last longer. Some (like me) want gameplay spoil, because after so many games I don't want to lose time IG understanding a game mechanic when it break the pace of the game.
For romance, let's face it. It is one of the biggest selling point of the game. We also know that the first playthrough will probably be the best experience of the game because it is new. I personnaly intend to have a romance in the game, and I'm not going to settle for anyone in that game. And the sex of my character does not bother me at all. But the idea of not having the experience I hope because my gender choice lock me out of some relationship is a problem. I don't need to know personnal history or huge spoil part of the story, I like to speculate but that's it.
Also, there is a chance for a threesome in Andromeda, and that requires a lot of planning. I'm not getting metaphorically screwed like in witcher 3. "Oh I'm sorry I didn't tell Yennefer I didn't love her at all, I wanted to say that I had still feeling for her but I did not want the same kind of relationship than before. Unfortunatly I couldn't say that not at that moment and not later, so between saying I don't feel a single thing toward her and saying I have still feeling I choose the latter and you know what ? That did not made me a cheating bastard ! But fine, I hope I die during the final mission so you will be both sorry for abandoning me at the worst possible time ! Also locking me in a inn frequently visited by witch hunter was really irresponsible !" Consequences ? My ass, I did not get any choice.
Back on the subject, I do not want to know everything. The best solution would be from future me to tell me which gender I should start from but alas it is not an option...yet. I did not mind discovering that Aveline was not interested in me or that Dorian is gay (well duh), it is part of discovering the game. But for me enjoying the game involve having a romance so having no romance in mass effect 2 as femshep did diminish the fun. The game has not infinite romance choice so it is really easy to be locked of that option if you are interested in only 1 or 2 character.
A better thing to do would have to communicate character bio to have some additional information and allow speculation. It is weird to phrase it that way but you can guess at least some partial information about a character sexuality just by looking at them, having additional information could help speculate. In dragon age inquisition you don't have to look twice at dorian to know that he probably likes men. Actually I guessed every character sexual orientation in DA:I except Leliana not being a romance option and Solas being exclusive to elf. Not that it was too hard, Dorian, Blackwall, Josephine, Sera and Cassandra were pretty obvious. Cole, Varric and Vivienne not being romance option too.

Because if they don't players get into situations like with Solas in DAI and end up with broken hearts and tears that we have to read about for 500 pages. Personally I like to discover stuff through the game but knowing a character's sexuality doesn't necessarily mean that relationship will work out like you want it to. Solas, Samara, Morrigan, etc. Depends on the writing and I go into romances without spoilers but others sometimes prefer to be in the know.
It's like some people who read the last page of a novel before going through the chapters. Some people do, some don't

Well I guess that guides have to sell after all I don't look at as Bioware going dark on the romances. Honestly I can't remember if they ever revealed who would be romance able for who in any previous installments. For people who have never played a Bioware game and see the trailer that gives them an inkling that romances are available. The fact that Bioware hasn't revealed every squadmate or crew member's sexuality before the game, probably want you to discover it on your own. Just because Cora and Peebee were shown with BroRyder doesn't mean they aren't bisexual. We'll know soon enough I guess.

I was just stating that it was a long time ago and couldn't remember if they gave up such information before the game released and the fact that both Cora and Peebee could be bi. If they did so, that doesn't necessarily mean they'll do so this time with Mass Effect Andromeda. Or maybe they will. Still have a few days left and a Sara Ryder trailer on the way.

Whatever happened to actually playing the game and learning about the characters? Too many people want to know who's gay, straight, and whatever else before they even play the game. Why? I think Bioware shouldn't say anything at all when asked about who can romance what except, "play the game and find out." I'm already really salty about hearing a major spoiler about the characters that just got tweeted out in the open and it really killed the story for me. And if it wasn't for the fact that Bioware wants to hand hold everyone and is afraid that everyone wouldn't like everything about the game this wouldn't have happened. Why can't people just play the game and deal with it? Specifically to the romance: Because if the character comes later on in the game, you have to re-roll and replay if you picked the gender of the protagonist wrong. While some folks intend to replay a game multiple times, others only want a single play-through. Yes, it's just a romance, but if you have a specific pairing in mind, particularly with fairly limited cc options available at creation, and only one voice per gender of the protagonist, you gotta weight what you want more: a protagonist that looks/sounds pleasing to you or a romance you want.

Its like knowing everything about a film you're looking forward to and already knowing how it ends. Whats the point?

Err...because sometimes knowing what's gonna happen next doesn't necessarily demean the experience? *ALL* games I've played -- including all Dragon Age and the entire MET -- I played with the wiki and a walkthrough. I knew exactly what options to choose in order to get the perfect ending for a perfect playthrough. It did not in any means hamper my enjoyment -- in fact it greatly boosted it. It's just like the new Beauty and the Beast movie coming up this week. Heavens, everyone knows the story. Heavens, everyone's seen the animated film? Then by that logic you're saying there's no point to watching this live action remake.

Not that i'm bothered but I think gay and lesbian folks are a pretty vocal minority who usually get the short end of the stick with romance options so these folks having been burned before in these games want to know what their options are before they lock in the the sex of their character and that's fine. I'm not gay but I'd rather be surprised and disappointed then have my mind made up before I've even played the game - where's the fun in that.
Most of my favorite characters in Mass Effect games (Wrex, Mordin, Legion) are usually my favorites precisely because they are not romanceable. I assume this is because the writers can't rely on the promise of sex to keep players invested and to pad out dialogue so they have to get creative and find other narrative devices to sustain interest which leads to more memorable interactions and it helps if half of their content isn't gated off.
I'm just happy this time that BioWare are taking a broader view of relationship dynamics beyond the build up to an unfulfilling fade to black cut scene with one character at the expense of deeper interaction with the entire squad. Romance arcs are not the be all and end all and it seems BioWare have finally realised this. Garrus is a probably the most popular character in the series despite the fact most players are male and hence never romanced him; we still cared for him almost like family all the same. I'd much prefer relationships like that with the entire squad than have the ability to have endless superficial one night stands just for the sake of tradition.

All I want to know prior to release is whether Scott has the option to romance any male squadmates or male aliens. I don't need a play by play of every characters sexuality.

The orientations of characters shouldn't be considered spoilers any more than what they look like. It's just part of what they are, not who they are - not part of their personality. And knowing that is very helpful for planning characters and how you want to roleplay them. It's lame to make a character specifically for one romance just to find out ingame that you can't romance them as that character. Yeah, pretty much this hits in on the head. In an upwards of 100-hour game, most people don't want to find out late-game that that person they were romancing isn't actually romance-able by the gender you're playing as. They've shown Peebee's and Liam's loyalty missions already and I just avoided them because I want to experience them first in the game. OP, if you take umbrage to knowing each character's sexual orientation, just do your best to avoid that content. I'd suggest going dark now, as I'll be doing in a couple days.

It's lame to make a character specifically for one romance just to find out ingame that you can't romance them as that character. The other part that's now getting under people's skin is the hypocrisy of the "We want you to discover romances naturally" spiel, since they officially revealed 2 options for Scott after saying that. As for actual spoilers, it's just personal preference, really. Personally I don't want huge story spoilers, but some are fine with it. Live and let live. Considering the heavy roleplaying vibe that people have going into these games and their desire to be the character they're playing, having this meta knowledge is a waste. If we met in real life, I wouldn't know your orientation and you wouldn't know mine, but if one of us deemed the other attractive --assuming some nondescript gender/sexual orientation stuff because I don't look at mini-profile shit so just assume that everything matches up in regards to external preferences--and attempted to pursue, it's all part of the unplanned experience. And though I can see and understand the other side when taking in real world examples of wanting to know ahead of time in order to avoid wasting your own time, and that's fair. And at the same time, Bioware addressed that by letting things slip about Suvi, Gil, Cora, and Peebee. Just like knowing everyone's deal in real life ruins the mystique of life, knowing everything ahead of time about these characters ruins their mystique, too. If you hit on one and they decline, recover and move on to someone else. You'll eventually snag someone; just like life. If people want immersion in their games, there's nothing more immersive in this context than getting curved. It starts to annoy me when people go with "but in real life" when talking about video games. In many cases real life is hard , stressful, sometimes even depressing. Video games are an entertainment. The're suppose to be a fun thing you do when you want to forget about your real life problems. At least it's what it was in the past. Now video games are filled with doom and gloom because everyone wants more and more realism. Don't get me wrong having a video game be somewhat realistic is a good thing but when I read comments that dissect every aspect of the game in terms how "realistic" it is I start to think that we should just play less and live more. I apologize for rambling and, Cypher, this post isn't directed to you personally, it isn't about romance either, it's just something that started to bother me so I decided to get it off my chest.

I agree with the sentiment expressed. Part of the attraction of the games is that I have the control over what's going to happen at the descision making points. I don't want to settle for the second best, or just "snag someone". I tend to fall for one and only one character per game, and if I can predict which one it's going to be, I will roll to romance him or her. If it does not pan out, or if I really like another character, then I will reroll. But I prefer to start off with the most probable option available to me.

I truly don't understand why anyone would wanna watch almost 20 minutes of a loyalty mission. It's crazy haha. It's like that with everything now, movies, games. People wanna know EVERY little detail before it's out. What happened to discovering things when you get it? Takes all the magic out of it. I was trying not to watch anything on ME:A, but I caved a few weeks ago and watched the first trailers. But I mean, also less chamces to be let down if you don't sniff out every little morsel of info about the game too.

Imagine this carbonated beverage quivering with a lot of complicated feelings the closer the game comes to release and you'll get what's going on here. I like to think of it as a kimchi that's fermenting for a while. And it's getting really sour, but it's not QUITE there, there's still some off-textures and the sweet potato you added on a whim just isn't playing well and everything's trying to bubble to the surface but you remembered to weigh it down so it's FINE. TOTALLY FINE. Edit: I sort of want to know to help plan that all-important first playthrough. ...Except I don't do romances frequently, and almost never on the first playthrough. So I dunno, simple information that can be a lot of help in character planning WITHOUT spoiling too many details? Because, hypothetically, I find Suvi super-cute and don't hate her voice. It would be nice to know if I should roll a femRyder or a dudeRyder, because I understand that sitting there yearning for the first playthrough is bad. It may lead to men ditching Liara in hopes of Sam only to find out the hard way that that doesn't work. ...Heh, not that I remember that complaint and laughed hysterically at it, because I am a kind and sympathetic person.* *Utter BS, I laughed so hard

That's the exact opposite of my approach. The first playthrough is important because it's my only chance to play without planning. Why make the first run more like the subsequent runs?
