I just got the games in Jan and am now on my second playthrough of the trilogy. I need an explanation of the star child because I can't figure out what everybody is talking about even by googling, searching, and playing the games.

It's the Catalyst you meet at the very end of Mass Effect 3. Guess he got the name star child since a similar one is near the stargazer after the credits. So star-gazer, star-child. Or because he's a kid made out of stars. That might be it as well. Or did I misunderstand the question?

explanation for the thing? Crap. At times I've called it the Leviathan turd, but recently just called it, thing.
I have no explanation why Bioware had the thing part of the game. Sure it explains what choices Shepard can choose and why its doing what its doing, but I would've left it out and just have the crucible destroy the reapers as soon as the arms are fully opened. Its simple. Maybe that's the problem. They didn't want simple. I don't know.
All I do is get past the thing as quickly as possible to destroy it and its toys.

I need an explanation of the star child because I can't figure out what everybody is talking about even by googling, searching, and playing the games. Starchild is the Catalyst What were you wanting to know? I'm on my second playthrough as well I think I started in January also, or thereabouts. Edit: Aw, ninjaed. Yes, that's what I wanted to know. I had no idea until you guys filled me in. And I remember you starting the game when I started it. Hard to believe that I'm planning to do one more playthrough of the trilogy before I start MEA. So I'll have 3 PTs under my belt in a short time. I like to know what I'm getting into before I do all the wrong things in a game and that way I'll not go into MEA blindly because this forum will have filled me in on what to expect. (Plus I need to romance Garrus in the third PT). explanation for the thing? Crap. At times I've called it the Leviathan turd, but recently just called it, thing. Oh wait, I have the MEHEM The Mass Effect 3 Happy Ending Mod installed so I have never seen the catalyst scene. Now I know what to look for on Youtube so that I can see what I missed. What does MEHEM do in detail (obvious spoiler warning)? - It removes the catalyst scene. No ifs, not buts. It's gone for good. (So is your choice, you will now destroy the reapers no matter what) - It introduces a whole new scene showing how Joker disobeys orders and keeps the Normandy in the fight long enough for Shepard to be rescued (with the help of a certain Alliance captain ) - The Normandy no longer crash-lands on the Weirdo Planet - The Geth and EDI survive. EDI is now present during the memorial and new slides were added to the epilogue that will show the geth, if they are alive. - The epilogue slides now show survivors on the Citadel, most prominently Aria and Cpt. Baley. - You will see your Shepard reunited with his crew (and even some interaction unique to your LI if the LI is part of the Normandy crew). While they don't exactly have a party, now it is a real bitter-sweet ending with the emphasis on "sweet" rather than on "bitter" - The musical score is changed quite extensively, including the credits song - Since by the time of v0.3, quite a few people have contributed to this mod, I implemented some MEHEM credits in the stargazer scene. - Since v0.2, Harbinger will say a few lines during the beam run Thanks everybody!!! Having thrown myself in a game I thought I would never play, I have enjoyed the heck out of it, despite not understanding a lot of it. (I blame Bioware)

Ok, I'm in the process of watching crucible You Tubes and different endings. What depressing choices...like we're supposed to be happy to be made into human mush. Also, no wonder I didn't understand what people were talking about when they discussed the ending. Usually I know things like this but didn't have time to learn more about the game before I started playing it. Plus I totally missed out the original choices because I went straight to modding (I love mods). Glad I could watch this on You Tube rather than playing out the more depressing endings.

Lol. Having that mod right away explains how you managed to not know who the catalyst is I never thought I'd play these games either, but I'm glad that changed! I've been telling myself I'd wait for extensive reviews and a sale before picking up Andromeda, but what will probably actually happen is that I'll finish this playthrough (I'm on ME2 again), I'll watch a few first look videos on YouTube, and then just say, "screw this, I'll play for myself and see what I think," and pay full price for the damn thing. I hope you enjoy the Garrus romance! It's the only one I've done all the way through so far, but I loved it Edit: I also didn't find destroy with high EMS to be that depressing. I thought it would be, but expectation was much worse than reality.

I don't find Destroy to be all that depressing. Destroy is the only ending I would pick if I didn't have my game modded. I just watched all the endings and felt pretty sad with the others. Merging organic and synthetic seems like it could be a good ending but I don't trust it at all. Shepard doing nothing is the saddest of all, for me.

Control = You've just spent the entire game trying to stop The Illusive Man gaining control of the Reapers. For good reason. Synthesis = Space Casper's preference, which should be reason enough to rule it out as anyone else's. Refuse = BW's "middle finger to anyone who doesn't like the other options". Destroy = Particularly high EMS Destroy, the ONLY logical option. To quote Ripley - "it's the only way to be sure"....

It has no spirit, no spark. All is indeed peace and tranquillity. The peace of the factory, the tranquillity of the machine. All parts working in unison. To quote Kirk - " You're thinking the same thing I am. Mister Spock, the plug must be pulled." However people do hold strong opinions on this matter..............

Personaly, I found the synthesis option morally repellant. It's far too similar to eugenics and the creation of a master race. I find it incredible that the writers didn't consider or see this parallel. (Let me be clear, I am not suggesting that this was intentional on their part). Shepard unilaterally deciding to implement this is like the implementation of a compulsory systematic eugenics policy by a totalitarian state on it's population in order to create a master race. The positive spin and signposting they put on this option can come across as an (unintentional) endorsement/advocacy of these morally repugnant ideas. It's far too akin to fascism for me.
Star Child more like Star Fuhrer. No thanks. Commander Shepard the "Space Nazi" is not was I aiming for in my playthrough, or compatible with my role playing.

I found Synthesis to be one of the most evil options I have ever encountered in any fiction. Synthesis forcibly alters the genetic composition of every lifeform, and every lifeform to be born, in the galaxy, it would influence every galactic culture that does not know of the events (suddenly everywhere is hit by a green wave and everyone glows) and even those that do, how many cultures or civilisations will be destroyed in the aftermath of such an event? Let alone when you account for the fact that machines that have killed thousands of trillions of people are allowed to survive, and that the husks appear to regain their sentience... we appear to restore the person that was forcibling corrupted, tortured, impaled and replaced with machinery into a body of horrors.
It is one of the most depraved endings I have ever come across, and it is written as a good thing. That is what is most scary, I think.

The sign of terrible writing from people who can't grasp more then a child's understanding.

Millions as others? Can you provide a list of those millions? Sure Literally every short story, movie, book, video game, board game that exists an unbeatable by normal means antagonist. That is then magically able to be beaten by some plot device. Be it item or person.

So no. You can't provide a list. Not a list of millions which was obvious hyperbole. Which you are attempting to take literally for unknown reasons. But nearly all Shounen Anime follows this Star Wars suffers from this in various medias. Star Trek has individual episodes, story arcs and Movies with this problem. Every Elder Scroll game Nearly every Super Hero movie All Disney films Transformers Movies All Power Ranger seasons have at least one or two instances of this There are no doubt more how ever I have not read every single book nor watched every single TV show/movie nor played every single game in existence. But needless to say it is an extremely common ending that happens over and over again.

That's an easy fix. Right? Instead of saying millions, why not say a lot? Because there is a theoretical millions of possible stories. We don't know what stories were lost in time or were told by oral traditions. Not to mention it is nearly impossible to know what every culture and race make books or stories out of.

For the sake of argument, what would you have done instead that would be both better than the destroy ending and also not done "millions" of times before? The exact ending we got. Go on Citadel, find Catalyst. Converse with it then make a choice. A choice that is completely dependent on your personality and view of what you think is the best choice. Or possibly Crucible turns out to be a trap turning the citadel into a Massive weapon which is then used to take out the combined fleets as Shepard lays dying watching everything he/she strived to protect get wiped out as the Reapers continue their cycle and prepare for the next. And for point of reference my issue with with the ending concept be it in a mod form or players saying it would be better. That the Crucible docks, goes off and reapers are all gone and end of story as everyone rides off into the sun set on rainbows and unicorn farts.

The star child that appears during the endings is a representation of the Catalyst brought forth from Shepard's mind... In much the same way as Leviathan, when talking to Shepard during that DLC, conjures up images of Ann Bryson and Garrett Bryson's assistant. Shepard's "emotional connection to this image changes depending on different things that were done in the playthrough. One thought is that he/she regrets giving up having children, passing on his/her legacy to a family (represented in the final dream where the child runs to Shepard and both start to "go up in flames." Another thought is that he/she regrets not being able to save the child at the beginning of the game. Another interpretation of that dream hit me in my most recent non-imported playthrougth where Shepard deceived Wreav and sabotaged the genophage, with Eve dying and Mordin living in the process. The people speaking to Shepard during that last dream was exclusively Eve... asking Shepard if he had come to kill her and raising other questions about the future of the Krogan people. I took it as a lingering regret about the "price of war" and the decision made to prevent Krogan births to prevent more war with the Krogan after the Reaper war ends.
As a game mechanic, the Catalyst/star child is there just to explain the 3 options to the player. Whatever other meanings the player attaches to the nuances involved in those 3 options is up to the player to define for themselves.
The star gazer child that appears after the credits is, I believe, meant to show that - regardless of the ending selected life goes on and people still can dream. It's a message of hope.

Presenting it as a good thing is what makes Synthesis an interesting option. If evil options don't actually work, then choosing them is just stupid.

So Synthesis does exactly what the galaxy was already doing. The game series draws attention to the fact that only the human genome has such a wide variation compared to the rest of the galaxy. This requires a ton of incest or a lot of genetic engineering. The Alliance actually passed a law to limit the amount of genetic engineering they were allowed to do. Limiting it to health benefits only. There is also a very strong argument to be made that synthesis or a form very similar to it is an eventual end game anyways. Organic bodies can only evolve so much and the rate of technological improvement compared to organic evolution is like a SR-71 Blackbird vs a worm. As already in game the Grey boxes exist. Technology that can literally turn memories into data allowing for perfect memory recall. Further development and expansion of that technology would allow people to upgrade their mental capacity much in the same way you can upgrade your computer. Giving it more memory, RAM, etc. While there are young races in existence in the Galaxy that the Reapers will ignore most of them seem to be close to our current real world technology. If a Synthesis like action hit earth while there would be some confusion and problems. The actual conflict will be small scale and I doubt cultures would be wiped out. That is working under the assumption that while all races are aggressive they are not so blood thirsty they will destroy everything when a major change occurs. It is really hard to say how much of the original personality exists in a Husk. The entire set up seems like it wipes the original personal and reprograms the body at every level to be a bullet sponge troop. The same applies to all Reaper Troops. So while they might become sentient there isn't anything to support them regaining their original memories and personalities. So while you know what happened to Ted. If the Husk Ted gained sentience he woke up so to speak with a new personality and to him his body is normal. While to you knowing what was done to it. It would seem horrible.
