Based on the evidence of what I have seen you can be a combat specialist/biotic master/tech wizard whenever you want to be because of some space magic chip but was this even ever an issue? The class system lent itself to replayability, role-playing and more. To the best of my knowledge, having spent years on the late BSN, no one, whether critics or die hard fans that never criticise, complained that Shepard was "locked" in as a Soldier of Adept. My favourite class was the Engineer, the least popular class of all but never did I think, I cannot wait to biotic charge the next Blue Suns grunt on the next mission and thus I cannot even understand this choice as fan service because as already mentioned, I had never seen anyone complain about having classes. Instead we have a very shaky story about how you can basically do anything and everything you want because of implants that are controlled by some AI. I do not think unlimited freedom was the answer to whatever issues might have arisen with the 6 known classes. Anyway, my 2 cents and I would be very interested in what others think about this.

I have no issue with profiles, and I really don't think it will effect replayability. I like that we basically are given the ability to make custom classes. I am annoyed that the profiles are limited to 3 powers though. Especially because I played the old mass effects on PC and am used to being able to have more than that hotkeyed.

This has been discussed to death OP but if people really want to stick to class archetypes they can. Now if you want to mix it up you can, all this system does is allow for better role playing. In the past you couldn't truly be a biotic infiltrator. Now you can have tactical cloak with some biotic skills.

I always had complaints about the class system as I found it to be too rigid.
For example, in Mass Effect 2 I would've loved to play a Biotic/Combat class with Pull, Throw, Warp and Disruptor Ammo, using an Assault Rifle as a main weapon. Sure Vanguard is great fun, but sometimes you just want something different.
I like the new System because you can do many different combinations and even themed combinations. With the game being appearently so large as it is, I feel like it also helps to keep the combat fresh.
I wouldn't worry about replayability, especially for the first couple of levels, it provides enough restrictions that you can focus on different abilites for different playthroughs.

I honestly don't know of anything being in the lore that says a biotic not being able to use things like tactical cloak or the cyro beam but then again I'm not a massive lore nerd. I understand the whole "you can become a biotic now even though you've never shown biotic potential" being an issue but not the other way around. And in the past Shep was always able to learn squad mates skills regardless of their class so I don't see a huge problem lore wise.

I don't actually mind it, it's a bit unrealistic but at least there was a story based reason for it. Tho still I do have one issue When Cora uses her biotic shield Liam is surprised she is a biotic, her being a human biotic is important because they are rare. The issue is you can pick a training history that includes biotic abilities. So your character is potentially already a biotic and it never comes up. Like maybe it comes up later in the game I guess? Maybe all the Ryders have some skills in biotics and you can just choose to train them or not but you would expect Liam to mention it, he doesn't know you well either.
The trilogy didn't deal with Shepard being a biotic well enough either though, considering there were so many story lines about how human biotics are treated.

And in the past Shep was always able to learn squad mates skills regardless of their class so I don't see a huge problem lore wise. Ellen Ryder's codex entry mentions that she was exposed to element zero while pregnant with the twins, so it seems like all Ryders at least begin as low-level biotics, presumably later neurologically enhanced by SAM. That's if you don't pick your initial training as a biotic, anyway.

No issue with this. And people can spec into one class only if the want to.

Btw the whole profile switching thing reminds me of the Modular Abilities advantage from GURPS (delving into major nerdery here, guys), so it doesn't seem weird to me at all.

Only reason I have a problem with it is now classes can't be recognized and explored within the story. After the Omega DLC and the choice the engineer had to hack the terminal faster than every other class I was excited that during new installments of ME things like this would be explored more. Even the devs at one point said they would like to take a look at more of these types of instances in future games. I would have loved class based dialogue and choices in Andromeda, but with this new system I don't see it happening.

It's actually more beneficial to spec into one class archetype to level up the profile. Do that if you want. Dont if you dont. Who cares?

I really like the freedom and customization it gives, but I do see how it could work against replayability. But in a game with no level cap you've got to wonder if we really need to have replayabilty. Hopefully enemies scale with the character and maybe they did something similar to Skyrim with the infinite side quests. Only time will tell I guess.
I know, at the very least, It's good for two play throughs...male and female. Aside from that, maybe switching up the difficulty will add a few more playthroughs. I always play new games on normal difficulty so I can learn the mechanics before diving into the tougher stuff. So once I finish on Normal I'll probably do another playthrough on Hardcore, then Insanity. At least...that's my plan. I suppose I could also die today and never do any playthroughs...

If it bothers you then pick a "class" at the start and stick to it. It's not like you'll be punished for it, the flexibility that comes with profile switching comes at a cost.

I have no issues with it. Now you can do things that were impossible in the OT, like a sentinel with charge and assault rifles.

On paper, I much prefer profiles, and the ability to mix and match abilities as I see fit.
We'll see how it works once I play the game, but the potential for fun customization is better than ''you picked X class, now use Y abilities all game long" if you ask me.

I have no issues with it. I have always wanted my infiltrator to have a combat drone with him. Now he can while still fighting cloaked allowing the drone to be a trap per say.

I'm with the"I'm okay with this group."
Looking forward trying different ability synergies within a profile, and how profiles can complement each other.
When playing ME there were plenty of times I would loved being able to choose my own abilities. I tended to use certain abilities more, so really didn't need numerous abilities.

I'm not generally a fan of classless systems.I generally find restrictions to be more fun, in sort of the same way that I want enemies to actually be challenging.. But this implementation works for me -- even though the lore behind it doesn't.

Just because no one ever complained about the class system or being locked into a class doesn't mean Bioware can't give a system like this a try.

Going for different profiles means doing a lot of abilities... with shitty damage. Explorer perks can be earned to compensate a litte, but staying in 1 class will always be more powerful. But power doesn't necessarily get it done with the most fun. I'll see it through as I go.

How does this fit in with the lore though? Biotic + Tech = Sentinel That's something I never really thought about before. So, I know that Tech Armor is now tied to the Sentinel profile. Does this mean that a player can have Tech Armor in addition to Tactical Cloak or Biotic Charge?

The way I see it is that you can focus on the class and playstyle you want anyway. During the trial I focused on vanguard abilities and ulocked the vanguard profile. In the process of leveling up I also unlocked the adept and soldier profiles but didn't experiment with switching and just stuck to the vanguard. Of course that could change going further into the game but it seems smart to focus on no more than two profiles. Kind of like majoring in something and minoring in something else.

I do not have a problem with this at all, basically they did away with classes- well that's how I see it at least. If you want to play as an adept, or infiltrator and so on you can, or if you want to mix and match through profiles you can do that as well
