I don't like silent protagonists, it's one of the reasons I played DA:O just a few times.

I probably felt more connected to my DA:O characters than any of my Shepards/Hawkes/Inquisitors.
Silent protagonists do open up broader possibilities for role playing and that probably goes a long way to making each playthrough feel a little more unique for the player.
However, they love their cinematics with Mass Effect so I really can't imagine the series working without a voiced protagonist. I do expect the ME3 trend to continue with lots of auto-dialogue for ME:A. Which incidentally I don't' have a problem with, as long as the dialogue system is consistent over any potential sequels.

Just no. That is my main problem with KOTOR and DAO. Everyone else is fully voice but the protagonist somehow is on the mute. It's weird and unecessary for the main character to be silent.

IMO, the game would suffer. In fact, I don't even think I would buy the game. It would have advantages, but only to the people that actually roleplay in their own heads. When I'm discussing books or movies with another person, we can always come to some sort of conclusion about what they were talking about, or at least on the surface what they were talking about. (see the final scene in No Country For Old Men for what I'm talking about here) In video games with a silent protagonist with so much roleplaying going on, you can't do that. I'd much rather hear the voice of the protagonist so that we can all get on the same page. Even if people disagree about it. Us being on the same page is part of the problem. I'd like two players to be able to experience exactly the same scene with exactly the same dialogue and come away having interpreted it completely differently. I'd like to be able to play through the same scene in the exactly the same way with two different characters and have the scene mean something different. BioWare's silent protagonist games let me do that. I find it happens far less often with a voiced protagonist.

While I prefer a silent protagonist I've come to terms with the idea that Bioware isn't going back to it. So I hope they keep improving the wheel.
Out of the three games that implement it, I felt most comfortable with DAI, thanks to Bioware finally disassociating personality/tone from dialogue options that represented decisions or statements ( whether the Inquisitor is Andrastian or not, for example )
So I hope ME:A follows DAI exemple and leaves behind the Paragon/Renegade of old ME games.

Just for fun (because this ship really has sailed hasn't it) but what if the Ryder trailer was a trolling cutscene for a protagonist that was actually silent? If BioWare did make the protagonist silent (incredibly unlikely as that is) would it have any advantages, or would the games market and players universally believe BioWare were off their head? Silent protagonists in dialogue-driven games are a thing of the past. Even Bethesda has jumped aboard the voice train.

That (highly unlikely) scenario would be on the very short list of things to make me not buy the game.
I don't like games with silent characters, but if one must go that route, make everyone silent. Silent protagonist with everyone else talking is weird throwback and I'm thrilled it's dead in mainstream games. I loved kotor and da:o despite it, not because of it.

BioWare's silent protagonist games let me do that. I find it happens far less often with a voiced protagonist. All that would do is confuse people even more. If you have the same scene with wildly varied interpretations all you are going to do is confuse the player, and make them wonder back to the first part of the game. Let's take my example of No Country For Old Men. You remember the scene where Tommy Lee Jones is talking to his wife about the (second?) dream that he had? We can all agree that he was talking about a dream. But what he was really talking about was death, at least IMO. In your scenario, it can be a great conversation starter, a great story. But I'd like to know actually WTF we are talking about without having two wildly different tales.

As much as I loved my Wardens, it always felt immersion breaking when DA:O/A have these well made cinematic cutscenes where it looks like the warden is going to talk but they keep their faces shut and only make faces. Yeah, it was always weird to cut to the Warden's face during an emotional scene. She'd look all intense like she was about to burst with wanting to speak. Aaaand, nothing. I half expected her to start miming out her thoughts.

Well, I'm used to it to play a talkative main character. I would miss it.
btw. What if we could create Rayder like in TheSims4? Choose walking animation, is Rayder a Sheman or Manshe, facial hair yes or no? I don't like barriers to be honest. exception the barriers that makes Rayder immortal!

I wouldn't care too much in and of itself. I still play many games like this.
But at the same time, it probably wouldn't feel like Mass Effect. It was the first big game that did this. It would be weird for the series that started it to crap on it's own legacy.

I like both silent and voiced. For Mass Effect I think voiced generally works better. However my 2 favorite games of all time have silent protagonists (kotor and dao).
Our dialogue options seemed more plentiful and diverse with silent protagonists. The voices are nice when they fit the character. My boyfriend thinks it is odd when I play games and he only hears half the conversation. If we get multiple options like DAI I'd be happy.

Id honestly be shocked if they went that route even as an option at this point.
But they did it for The Old Republic...so anything is possible.
