I find it a bit disturbing that the Lead Writer should have to excuse the inability of the sentinels to use magic in the way he does (particularly metagaming) when I would have thought there was a perfectly reasonable explanation from what Solas did. I actually think the metagaming excuse is somewhat lame. If an opponent group IS meant to be made up exclusively of mages then they SHOULD all be using magic in some form or other regardless of the fairness or enjoyment of fighting them. That would simply be part of the challenge in defeating them. It's Twitter, which demands brevity. There is also the issue that the devs never really go on extensively about lore, letting the game and ancillary materials speak for themselves. They may answer a question here and there, but they never expound on it at great length. And really, I think it's important to remind players that the devs have to take metagame things into account when designing their game. Realistically, any mage of middling ability should be able to destroy most melee combat fighters, excepting the very skilled, fast fighters who are able to get to them before being roasted. But you can't have that in a game where all of the classes are supposed to be of similar strength; otherwise, why have classes at all? There are similar issues with having lyrium, and lyrium addiction, be a gameplay mechanic. While it was briefly touched on in DAO, out of all three games, DAI is the one that should have had that as a component of the templar spec. It's an issue for Cullen and Ser even has you craft a philter, but it's not EVER required for gameplay for meta reasons. It would be nice if the devs could include all the things, but they can't. It's important that players understand that. I'm pleased he answered the question as he did. [edit] If they did as you suggest, they would probably have to nerf the magical abilities of the mage enemies themselves, which has its own set of problems. YOU may not think fairness or enjoyment is important, but it IS a consideration when designing games and encounters within those games. Heck, even if you side with the templars in DA2 and storm the Gallows, the combatants are a mix of melee demons and magic-using mages. It helps to keep things fresh for the player. It also ensures that the player is not penalized too badly for not having a certain class or spec, such as templar to counter mages. I recall the qunari saarebas fights in DA2. They have some uber lighting ability that hits HARD; I've often been one-shot by it. You better get to them quickly, or be able to move your party on seeing them cast, or you die. There was usually just a single saarebas in those groups. I can't imagine a whole bunch of them. They have to think about all these things.

In my defence, what about when we go to fight a dragon and we have to fight not just one big dragon but lots of little ones as well? Or when we fight a whole variety of demons using different forms of magic against us? Some of those were really tricky, particularly if you took them on too early in the game. So if it is okay in those circumstances, then it ought to be possible to balance the gameplay if the people we face are all mages. As was pointed out, mages can have different levels of ability and the trick would be picking out the most dangerous ones that you need to take out quickly over those that you don't.
The Temple of Mythal comes towards the end of the game when you have built up considerable ability (and hit points) and the fact is that the sentinels out in the wilds seem more like very quick rogues. I've not fought the ones inside the temple but they seem pretty much the same. To be honest, it never occurred to me they were all meant to have magical ability because whilst they are an enclave of ancient elves they are still present in a post Veil world, where the majority of people (including elves) do not have magic and yet Solas implies that without the Veil they would. The question and PW's reply would suggest that all the sentinels post-Veil do have magic, but of varying ability to use it in battle and since, as everyone seems to agree, that would have equally been the case pre-Veil, then that would suggest that they were unaffected by the Veil's dampening effect.
I also tried to take out the saarebas as quickly as possible in DA2 and they were lethal considering they were just regular saarebas, not powered up with lyrium ones. We are never likely to encounter a group of them because the Qunari are understandably wary of having too many in one place. However, since we are going to Tevinter, where there is the possibility of several mages (not necessarily all of the same ability) working together against us owing to the culture there, I would welcome the challenge presented. To be honest I found the enemy mages in the main game of DAI pretty easy to defeat and Corypheus was only challenging whilst he had his dragon, which was a bit disappointing considering the Venatori were meant to herald from Tevinter. To my mind the battles all round, but particularly some of the mages, in DAO, DAA and DA2 were far more frightening and challenging than in DAI. In those games I definitely wanted to take out the mages as quickly as possible but the Venatori mages (with the odd exception) were really easy even in the later stages of the game.

Alli @jawsisinmywcJust curious, is there a lore reason why not all of the elves in the Temple of Mythal were mages? Patrick Weekes @patrickweekes Even in ancient times, not all elves were of equal ability, in terms of raw power or in terms of being able to cast while in combat. Metagame reasoning of course is that enemy groups made entirely of mages are really unfun to fight. And here I was thinking they were really advanced arcane warriors. I actually assumed for a while now that they are 'magical' warriors in a similar way to Cole who "goes where the knife has to be" or like Avvar who use aid of spirits in battle. In fact, Cole even makes some comments to Sera that suggest that her talent with bow may be influenced by her unconscious attunement to the Fade. It's not far fetched to assume that ancient elves would be better at tapping the Fade to boost their melee prowess. Or, you know... wield hammers nearly twice their size.

In my defence, what about when we go to fight a dragon and we have to fight not just one big dragon but lots of little ones as well? None of those fights are compulsory. The only full-sized dragons YOU MUST DEFEAT in DA are the Archdemon, a high dragon in Awakening and Corypheus' red lyrium dragon. And none of them summon little dragons. The Sentinel elves are a compulsory fight, at least for the first half of that quest.

Has anyone else been asked to prove they are human when they logged in? Just had that happen to me. Went to the log in screen as usual and after entering my information another screen popped up asking me to prove I was human. Ostensibly proved I was human but then was only allowed to proceed if I clicked on a link the adverts that I was not interested in. Said I wasn't interested and then got put in an annoying loop system that continually returned me to where I started, minus the option to prove I'm human. So closed down everything to desktop, came back and was able to log in as usual. Is this something I should report to the site moderators as someone messing with their log in system or was it legit?

I'm always logged in. I've gotten the "prove i'm not a robot" box before on other sites, but it didn't have advertisements. Have you run a virus scan?
