Sam Sykes @samsykesswearsGive me banter, fantasy writers, I beg you. Have your characters talk about something other than worldbuilding or the plot. Have them crack a joke or ask about romance or muse on something stupid. Let me pretend they're people and not props. Mike Laidlaw @mike_LaidlawAttn: @patrickweekes. I think this is on to something and we should explore these ideas at some point. BiowareWaifu Addictress No, please no. Too much banter that strays from world-building ruins the immersion for me. Mike Laidlaw @mike_Laidlaw Have you played the DA games? Because banter is a thing we do a LOT of. Patrick Weekes @patrickweekes55,000 words of "these two followers talk to each other in the wilderness" flavor banter alone in DAI, if I recall correctly. BrennaCeDria⭐ @brennacedria I don't understand how it could distract from world building anyway. The banter builds the charas to build the world. Unless you had them talking about, like, Metalocalypse or something. That might break immersion. Patrick Weekes @patrickweekes Challenge accepted. BrennaCeDria⭐ @brennacedriaI would say if you can fit Metalocalypse into DA4, I'll buy like 4 copies, but really. That's not too far fetched to begin with. Mike Laidlaw @mike_LaidlawTHE DARKEST, MOST BRUTAL PLACE IN THEDAS. THE NEVARRA TREEENNNNNNNCH.

I don't get the "too much banter strays from world-building"... banter can be used for world-building as well. Or tells us more about characters. Or humanizes them. Or can help with immersion. Hardly possible for relatable character to be prattling only about stuff relevant to the story or area. Yes, in general I agree with you. However I have to admit, after an entire day of listening to Solas and Cole chatting movies (most of which I hadn't watched), my eyes started to glaze over a little. I usually love banter though.

Anyone who treats people like chess pieces deserves to lose. I think you may be taking the chess metaphor a bit too literally. No Deary, it's a Person of Interest quote. I was so excited I finally got a chance to use it.

I've never heard much banter until yesterday when I was in the Hissing Wastes. Blackwall talking about his time in a different desert, Cassandra teasing Dorian about his happiness at being with Quizzy. Dorian offering to draw Blackwall diagrams to show what he and the Inquisitor get up to (Oh, those I'd love to see, LOL!) Dorian teasing Cassandra about her image on a painting. Dorian and Blackwall bickering and an option for the Inquisitor to say something. It's the most banter I've ever had. I don't think banter loses immersion. It gives the characters some background that isn't necessarily to do with your main character and shows they have interactions without you. It makes the world seem more real to me, so I hope they don't lose banter for the next games. Was that Sam Sykes the fantasy author? He does have banter in his books and it is really fun.

Ah yes, the diagrams! I always got a giggle out of those. Sadly, in my current game on hold, I left Blackrain in jail so no diagram banter for me.

There's also this one... but I'm not sure if I want to know what this is referring to. Cole: Dorian, I really wish you would tell me. Dorian: I drew you a diagram. Isn't that enough? Cole: No. Dorian: Good. Because the thought of you trying that frightens me more than a little. I can just imagine... Inquisitor: Do I even want to know? Dorian: Probably not! Yeah, one thing I have learned since following Mike Laidlaw on Twitter is that he occasionally gets confused with Marc Laidlaw at cons and sometimes gets tweets meant for Marc.

Of which, you might be lucky to hear 10% They realize that was a major nono in DAI. They originally had it set to hear all of it after playing 100ish hours. But most folks didn't play that much and also I don't think it accounted for mounts/combat encounters, etc. They were testing out something new in Trespasser with those glowing trigger points.

I get what they were going for with the trigger points. I don't like them. It's not.... immersive companions deciding to have a chat behind me if I can make it happen. Do DAO and DA2 with the trigger point just being walking through that area. I walked the Redcliffe lakeside bridge and the Orzamaar Proving Grounds Bridge as well. The Car making it happen in Andromeda was also good, although it also seemed to mean you would hardly never get it if you were NOT in the car.

From what I understand the banter button actually triggers the chance to trigger the banter - hence it doesn't always work when we click it. But clicking button 3 times and getting a piece of banter is still better than waiting 30 mins to get characters to talk. And obviously, with BW making the game, I'm fairly sure they can program this thing to work more reliably than external program Alternatively (or alongside the button) we can get an option in menu to increase or decrease chance of banter, so we can modify it accordingly.

I disliked them, but I can see how they were trying to avoid any potential banter issues with the final DLC of the game, so I can't fault them for that. They were greatly immersion breaking for me and made the whole thing seem less natural and more gamey, which I don't want.

I was fine with it in Trespasser, maybe simply due to it being different, but yeah... having a whole game with glowing chat points? Maybe not. Okay, that CE trigger (when it worked) was handy... I've added a mod recently that's supposed to trigger the banter more regularly, I'm gonna see how that goes. From what I understand the banter button actually triggers the chance to trigger the banter - hence it doesn't always work when we click it. It definitely needs to be more reliable/regular somehow... I get that they want to pace it out enough that you don't have chatty companions for 2 hours, then 6 hours of silence. I wouldn't mind seeing one of the banter triggers being when you idle for say... 2 full minutes or so (non-paused). Right now the banter is supposed to trigger every 15-20 min. IIRC. Combat and other interruptions can mess with that though.

Anyhow - in Inquisition we can't front-load ALL of the banter (I know, I tried ), since some of it triggers only after completing, for example, companion quests or go through certain stages of main quest, so it's not like they don't have a wiggle room there - make it so certain banters trigger only after certain quest stages or approval levels reached, while limit some banters only to certain areas (we did have area banter in DAI as well) and the issue of front-loading shouldn't be that big of a deal, IMO.

How many times have I been distracted by a phone call or a person wanting to talk to me while I'm playing, or even just a bio break? I'd hate for the banter to trigger right when I am afk for stuff. I know there was a way to pause the game in combat, but I don't recall there being a way to pause it while I was just exploring - other than by opening the journal or world map or something like that. When something needs my attention right away - like a person or a phone call - I don't think to open the journal before removing my attention from the game. I think I would miss a lot of banters if they set them to go off when you idle for two minutes!

Just so you know, you can pause the game at any time (combat or exploring) without having to leave the screen. But if you walk away from the game without pausing it, banter is going trigger anyway. It could trigger 2 seconds after you step away from your computer to 15 minutes or so, you just don't know.

Cori Nicole @genevrael Trapped at work, pondering the mysteries of the ages: why does the 5th floor have cheese slices and not the 2nd?
