Steve Gaynor @fullbright
please share your most embarrassing game dev crimes. Mine: all the scripting in Gone Home is contained in 2 gigantic uScript graphs, bc I didn't know about interlinking many smaller graphs at the time. It's only 2 bc the first one started running too slow to navigate. Your turn. Allan Schumacher allanschumacher
Mine wasn't in release but I found a blocking bug in DAI conversation system. I needed a dummy line for Cullen that would NEVER ship. So for a week we had text to speech say "asdfasdf" in a key war table conversation for the very first line. This entire Twitter thread is hilarious (and sometimes terrifying, especially if you know anything about programming.) Several instances of '.... wait, THAT'S why that game works like that?' as well. (I now know why Baldur's Gate shipped in debug mode!)

Part of a longer conversation...Forficula @forficula13I don't think John has toxic views, hes a nice guy. I just don't want quests to help people getting out of closet while the world is about to be destroyed, which was literally the entire questline for Dorian. And he was actually very cool companion. Patrick Weekes @patrickweekesMy take, for what it's worth: loved Dorian's quest, but didn't love that some follower quests were full missions with combat, and some were just scenes (like Dorian's). John and I have talked about making sure follower plots feel exciting and adventurous. (That said, we've been dealing with "world-ending threat put on hold for personal plots with minor stakes" forever (Grunt's rite of passage in ME2, Bastila's family in KotOR), so there will always be plots you wouldn't have time for if the game used real time.) Forficula @forficula13Okay that is true. Maybe a good mixture between combat and cutsceenes, cause cutsceenes are always great, especially if you get to make some choices. John Epler @eplerjcA lot of it comes down to figuring out what works for each character - and then making sure it works with the main story. But it's a judgment call. [HASH]DAT With that logic you shouldn't do any side quests really. It's kinda like in SWTOR, if you play Jedi Knight, in Chapter 3 your mission is basically stopping the Emperor from destroying entire planets and yet you still have time to scan transportation devices and whatnot. That's just how games work. I loved Dorian's personal quest, though, so no complaints from me.

Don't wanna go off topic but Dorian's quest is more than just "hey, I'm gay".
- He never hides the fact he's homosexual, nor goes around telling everyone about it. - Homosexuality (and Trans) while not illegal in Tevinter is generally unaccaptable (but not uncommon between slaves and their masters), as marriage between powerful/of status Mages is encouraged to have a potent Mage child. - There's also the fact that a Human Inquisitor (Trevelyan) is a distant relative of Dorian (Pavus).
Thus it's a very personal quest especially for a Trevelyan/Homosexual Inquisitor as Dorian runs away from an arranged marriage,- and trying to get his father to come to terms with his son. Not to mention Halward tried to force him to do it using Blood Magic.
Allthough regardless how the quest ends, in Trespasser his father dies and he must assume his responsibilities, and depending on player choice he might be in relationship with Iron Bull, which is double the trouble to be both gay and married to a Qunari which isn't even a Mage (considering Qunari-Tevinter conflict) while holding a high position.
Also trying to change Tevinter for the better by forming the Lucerni.
In short he's a friggin good companion that got a lot on his hands, which i hope we will see in DA4 considering it's presumed location (Tevinter).

Calwyne @calwyndirtharan Hey @patrickweekes P.Tricky, oh lovely creator of worlds. What offering do we need to make to get some elven vocabulary. For us who sacrifice blood sweat and tears trying to learn this language as much as we can. *prays*
Patrick Weekes @patrickweekes It's something we'd want to discuss internally. As soon as we release a vocabulary sheet, it makes it a little harder for us to add new words whenever we need to. (Which IS a thing we do.) Also, our grammar rules are all over the place.

Also trying to change Tevinter for the better by forming the Lucerni. In short he's a friggin good companion that got a lot on his hands, which i hope we will see in DA4 considering it's presumed location (Tevinter). /endrant I think it's also prudent to point out that Thedas is a place where the concept of gay or trans (while it clearly exists) isn't even solidified enough for people to have a proper name or definition for - and it's not really that weird considering that it hasn't been much of a solidified concept here, in modern world, up until fairly recently and where there's still a lot of discussions to be had when it comes to complexities of sexuality or gender. ...Which is why I am confused with the whole "AHH, RETCON!!" and "AAH, LECTURING!!", when the characters are trying to approach those in the way they understand it/may not understand it. It's similar to the whole Krem issue. It was - from in-world perspective - entirely expected for Inquisitor to not be very familiar with people who are trans and thus have basic or even insensitive questions about the topic stemming from pure, in-story-warranted ignorance. Or for Iron Bull to try and explain the concept the way he understands it (while being protective of his friend, being the big, horned mother hen he is, duh) - and the closest he understands it is the quirk within the Qunari culture that he can try and use to explain the idea with. Like... why did suddenly the shouts about 'mah immersion!' stop when it comes to that aspect of the world?

Patrick Weekes @patrickweekesMy take, for what it's worth: loved Dorian's quest, but didn't love that some follower quests were full missions with combat, and some were just scenes I like variety in the companion quests. Having them all be combat oriented would get boring after a while. Also, when playing on harder difficulties, it's nice to get a break from enemies now and then.

I think it's good to have a balance of combat and dialogue. I think Andromeda was actually quite strong in regard to it's loyalty missions. They felt balanced to me. Also I feel like sometimes the devs spend too much time explaining themselves to people who want to see them fail. When someone is complaining about injecting your politics, they are just mad you aren't putting politics they agree with in.

Forficula’s explanation was: “His posture is yelling I’m white supremacist dad lord of str8 blood magic. It’s not about color but his intent.” Maybe he means just 'supremacist'? Like, Tevinter does have a problem with own supremacists - we fought an entire sect of them, but that's a bit different thing from 'white supremacy'. And while Halward doesn't appear to be above your run-of-the-mill proud Tevinter noble, he's not a Venatori.

Sounds like he's reading into the Dorian quest, expecting there to be an attack and thus seeing it. Self-fulfilling prophecy kinda thing.

Forficula’s explanation was: “His posture is yelling I’m white supremacist dad lord of str8 blood magic. It’s not about color but his intent.” Yeah it makes sense if you ditch the "white" part since race has nothing to do with it. I guess some people don't know the supremacist label can attach to things other than race though. And, of course, Halward being a Tevinter supremacist dad lord of str8 blood magic and wanting to apologize for it was the entire point. Lol. Leaving that part out just reads like the person doesn't believe in personal development/growth or that some beliefs make you irredeemable which makes perfect sense for some kinds of people actually nvm.
