(though...he is a rogue, he could get in and out of her shop without being IDed.) This is something about Dragon Age and other RPGs I've played that I don't really understand. What exactly IS a rogue? Before Dragon Age I thought it was a sort of brigand... like a highwayman, maybe. But in games it's one of the three "classes," and for some reason fighting with two daggers is the same as fighting with a bow. I get that a rogue is a generally small-ish person who is a quick fighter, but then, Varric...? I don't get quick and small from Varric. I mean he's short, sure lol Any ideas on this term and where it originated? I'm not actually sure myself. I know that the class used to be called thief then it was changed.

Wow! I've only just seen the new thread and already on pages 11! As for age, I'm really not surprised there's 40 plus people playing especially if they fell in love with the games of the 80s etc. I'm 37 by the end of the year and started gaming long time ago as a kid in the 80's with atari and nintendo etc I also started with online gaming way way back in 1999 with Everquest. What I find more interesting is how there's a perception a lot of women don't play games when there's a ton of us out there (btw I once was told ingame long time ago people thought I was a guy cause I was "aggressive" with my pulling - character was female... yeah okay then lol) I love how the thread is not just about Cullen now cause a lot of the times we'd branch out anyways I played a little as a teenager, Zelda, Mario etc but I really didn't get into pc gaming until I started playing Everquest 2 in 2007 not REALLY. Even then I didn't branch out more than other MMORPGs but recently I want less interaction lol also I gave DBG a chance when SOE sold them and I don't like em. DA and ME and Bioware weirdly give me way more satisfaction when I play. If I am going to play a game over and over again to level a toon then I'd rather be playing DA to be honest. Plus...Cullen, Alistair and Anders *sigh* I grew up in a time before computers, but I was always a big fan of games. I didn't really care if I won or lost, I just wanted to play them. Board games, of course, were a big thing and I played Candyland a lot and watched my parents play Monopoly until I was old enough to join in. When consoles first became a thing, it was a while before we got one, but I remember hours playing Pong. Oh, I was also a BIG pinball player. And then, along came this new thing... Space Invaders, followed by King's Quest and... ARCADES!! My first introduction to computer gaming was an unknown adventure game that I don't even remember the name of. The first one I do remember was a shareware game called Wizardry Gold, which was a remaster, if you will, of Wizardry 7, a DOS game. The years rolled and I saw a game with a skull on the cover. I kept thinking, "I don't want to play a pirate game!" Finally, breaking down, I bought it, but still resisted playing it. My oldest daughter finally installed it on our kids' computer and the next thing I hear is, "Mom, the characters TALK to each other!" I was curious. Installed the game and loved it. The name of this game? Baldur's Gate. I've been hooked on those types of games ever since. Oh, and Baldur's Gate was developed by BioWare, but Black Isle was the company of record.

Oh yeah, I definitely played arcade games. Spent hours playing them at places like Putt-Putt golf and when we went skating in the mid 80s I've never played Baldur's Gate but I did play a MUDD back in the day for awhile. I am totally glad I decided to pick up the DA games at Game Stop. Originally I bought them for the PS3 but when I found out that DA:I only had DLCs for the PC that's when I switched to the PC for those. I was at the time looking for something that took me away from the pc. I spend hours a day working on 3d Models and textures and artwork that when I decided not to play Rift and EQ2 anymore I wanted to unchain myself from the pc...yeah that didn't work especially the difference in the graphics of DA:I from PS3 to the PC. I can't even bring myself to play on the PS anymore. That and MODS! lol I fill DAO with mods just to change it up a bit so I can change clothes and the looks of people....OMG I totally have an addiction. think I need a DA Anon grp hehe

Anyone who can move in and out of a fight quickly, pick locks, invis etc it's more a class with subclasses. Varric would essentially be an archer/ranger except he prefers the crossbow to an actual bow. Sub Classes for a rogue would be ranger, brigand, swashbuckler, marksman, bard, assassin. Basically any sub-class that can sneak, pick locks, backstab and range fight (without magic) also when available like in say D&D a scout/rogue can also pick up clues from tracking.

Thanks for that, btw. I literally just checked in on the BSN and got your message. Or else I wouldn't have known about this place! The only option I could recall of all the new possibilities was fextralife. So glad to find you guys! So.... Hi hi! Samara!!! *glomphugs* Glad you found us! I guess we could've sent up flares. Oof! *squeezes* Flares aren't necessary but thank you. *smishes* =D On the age thing: If you know Tom Hiddleston's birthday; you know my birthday. He's my trans-atlantic twin. ^__^ I thought for sure I was in the minority amidst a crowd of sub30 gamers, though. So glad I was wrong! =D Not that there's anything wrong with being under 30! It's just cool to realize I have peers here.

Kind of repeating what several people have said (I haven't figured out multi-quoting yet,)I think rogue is kind of a catch-all for anything that shares that basic skills set - light weapons and dual wield/archer, lockpick, pickpocket, stealth, traps, backstab, and uses dexterity to dodge/evade rather than direct (shield or armor) defenses. Assassins, hunters, spies (bards,) thieves, pirates, and stealth fighters (Templar shadows?).

Basically any sub-class that can sneak, pick locks, backstab and range fight (without magic) also when available like in say D&D a scout/rogue can also pick up clues from tracking. Only problem with scout is I believe that's basically a military position/role... you're part of a larger group, like, say, an army. You scout ahead, ya know? So in that case neither Sera, Varric, nor Cole would fit, and for that matter, not Isabela, not Sebsatian, not Leliana, not Zevran. I'm thinking "rogue" has a hint of the "ne're-do-well" about it, and in that case Varric, Sera, Isabela, and Zevran would all fit. Like, the rascally fighter, you know? But if such a character existed/exists in D&D, which I know BioWare based their games off of, then I'm guessing they took the broader approach, and so that's why someone good and sort of "pure" like DAO!Leliana and Sebastian can be "rogues," almost based solely on weapon and fighting style. This was so random, sorry guys lol

To me, a ranger would be an agile, quick footed explorer who's nature skills allows them to live off the land ie:hunting, fishing, tracking, traps, medicinal herbal knowledge..etc, and they would carry weapons and armor that facillitate their 'occupation?'. eg: bow/arrows, daggers, leather armor, items that are easily stashed and withdrawn, light to carry and don't interfer with a persons ability to be fast, agile and stealthy. A theif/assassin would have the same transferable skills and abilities (speed, agility, stealth, cunning, mechanical and herbal knowledge) but would use them for different purposes ie: pickpocketing, breaking/entering, lockpicking, poisons, tracking, luring and hunting people instead of animals. Their weapon/armor needs would be the same as the ranger's, so I'm thinking that for equipment rating, it's easier to lump ranger/theif/assassin into one class, 'rogue', because it's the unassuming, politically correct why to go.

I played a little as a teenager, Zelda, Mario etc but I really didn't get into pc gaming until I started playing Everquest 2 in 2007 not REALLY. I'm still into board games if I can enough people together, but people don't like playing UNO too much with me since I win a lot lol I got into RPG's gaming cause my brother recruited me for his AD&D group when I was about 12yrs, since then been pretty obsessed with RPGs esp in fantasy settings like D&D. I remember playing a AD&D game on the old Commondore 64... think it might of been dos and then when BG came out I was like 18/19 and was like "OMG!" been a gamer ever since... it's probably why I get along so well with the kids at school now, they all play some sort of platform/PC games now. I have been toying with the idea of getting the bridging BG game between the first and second game... Siege of Dragonspear byt Beamdog but not sure.

I've always gotten the idea that a rogue is simply a scout. Typically I end up calling them scouts. This was so random, sorry guys lol I think "rogue" can be defined differently depending on the game you play. I never ever would play a D&D traditional rogue (daggers, keeping to shadows, stealing, murdering, etc etc) but rogue is my class of choice for DA games. As much, my own definition changes as well and I find it hard to clearly define rogue now lol

If you think about it in D&D terms, every character has a class (Mage, Warrior, Rogue), but they also have an alignment (good, neutral, evil).
All warriors use melee weapons and generally wear heavy armor, but a good warrior might be more concerned with protecting his party members by taking hits for them, whereas an evil warrior might be a berserker, killing anything in his way with no regard to the safety of his party.
All mages cast spells and wear little armor, but a good mage might focus on healing magic, and an evil mage might raise an army of dead for his own benefit.
All rogues use light weapons/bows and move quickly, but a good one could be more concerned with disarming traps to keep his friends out of danger or using his high charisma for diplomacy (Varric fits in nicely with the Charisma rogue archetype). An evil rogue would pick pockets and assassinate nobles.
I do agree that "rogue" is not the best term because it's associated with shady brigand-type characters, though. I don't think there's a good neutral term that would fit better.

I have been toying with the idea of getting the bridging BG game between the first and second game... Siege of Dragonspear byt Beamdog but not sure. I wondered the same. I was obsessed with BGII at the time... but I bought the remastered BG for iPad a few years back... and found I couldn't play it. The march of technology in RPGs is too powerful for my brain. :/
