For some reason, Bioware just can't get resource collection quite right in Mass Effect. It's been different in every game.
Maybe if everything scannable for points glowed, or something, just so we don't have to run the scanner over every single thing. Sometimes you can sort of tell something might be scannable, but more often I am wrong or I already scanned something like it and can't get the points again. Some tech I swear I have gotten points on more than once, too.
If you thought spamming the area loot search button in Dragon Age: Inquisition was bad...

Here I am dying over and over because I hopped out the Nomad looking to scan something and got pinned down by Kett.

I get a glowing ((G)) on my screen when something important is nearby that can be scanned. This. I'm pretty sure the game even tells you early on that you'll get that glowing indication (and on PS4 your controller vibrates a little too to help signify something is nearby).

As other's have mentioned, the game warns you when there's anything near to scan.

Once you've scanned an enemy, mineral or plant once you never have to do it again. The only things you then have to scan are for missions or for crafting. You'll get a G prompt on your screen when you need to scan.

This. You're usually prompted it there are 'points' nearby. I'll admit when I saw the quote I thought I was about to get tisked because I thought my original post was a little...bold. Honestly though the scanner by and large is an entirely optional mechanic, especially in regards to crafting. You can craft a lot of different things without doing it...apparently anyways.

You realize you don't have to run it all the time. In fact the only times I do are in remnant vaults and small bases, and sometimes a big city hub. You wI'll have enough points regardless of scanning anyway.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I'd rather Bioware just dropped crafting entirely from its single player games.
I never quite understood the appeal of crafting. What difference does it make whether your character gets a weapon or piece of armor from crafting, loot, or a vendor? The end result is entirely the same, except looting and purchasing from a vendor don't require you to engage in time sink resource gathering. It's not like your character actually makes the item either. I could do without gathering elfroot or minerals.
The only place where crafting works IMO is in MMOs, where some time sinks are needed to prevent player markets from being flooded by crafted items, which would render them near worthless to sellers.

Well this time the benefit is augmentation and renaming weapons. If that's something you don't wish to do, I'd say it's all fair game. Crafting is always optional, just like in tabletop Rpgs.

Modifying existing armors or weapons is the only aspect of crafting I like. While crafting is optional, there are usually penalties for avoiding it in single player RPGs. Namely that the best items tend to locked behind crafting.

If you don't want to scan-don't. If you don't want to craft - don't. If you like to buy from vendor - then buy from vendor.
Personally I like to craft and have Ryder be all inquisitive about this new place. So I scan.
This way we all get what we like. How is that bad? 😉

For Op, as everybody else said, don't do it if you think it is boring. And it is not like it is hard to get credits and research data anyway. I only do it because I need want to know new stuff.

The omni-tool scanner itself isn't really too bad, in my opinion. Sure, it's annoying to have to do it, and I would prefer if it were removed from the game, but it's not the end of the world.
However, the person that decided the Nomad mining mechanic needed to exist should go step on a goddamn Lego.
