People have already said it, but scanning isn't mandatory at all. The {G} also helps to alert you should stuff be nearby.

For some reason, Bioware just can't get resource collection quite right in Mass Effect. It's been different in every game. Maybe if everything scannable for points glowed, or something, just so we don't have to run the scanner over every single thing. Sometimes you can sort of tell something might be scannable, but more often I am wrong or I already scanned something like it and can't get the points again. Some tech I swear I have gotten points on more than once, too. If you thought spamming the area loot search button in Dragon Age: Inquisition was bad... I understand some people might get tired of it and this is the one mechanic I've actually really thought about. For one, the scanning for research points, researching, and development is entirely optional. Secondly, the game usually prompts you with a small hint to scan or you have developed as a pathfinder so you start to know which things are scannable for research. I love that aspect. You actually feel like you growing into the pathfinder role. The scanning mechanic as whole is great because it works just as well as the scanning in Horizon Zero Dawn or Witcher 3 (I actually like it better than Witcher 3) and it's not used constantly as "detective" vision like in Arkham Knight, Assassins Creed, Far Cry, HZD, etc. It even gives full detailed descriptions and analysis of everything scanned and it reminds me Of scanning and exploring in the Ridley Scott movie, Prometheus. I spent time trying to come up with alternatives to the scanning or supplement the scanning so we aren't scanning and going into combat all the time. Something like Witcher 3's tools. In reality, mass affect Andromeda has everything and more than Witcher 3's mechanics yet this game still gets complaints. For example, the Torch is our automatic flashlight or lights on the Nomad, the medallion is basically SAM, Witcher senses is a combination of SAM and scanning, the item from Keira to open passage ways is our ability to open Remnant doors, the powers, skills, magic, crossbow, and combat is ME:A's even better combat. The only thing I think I would add to the non combat sections is maybe a small drone like the one we get for the engineer class for scanning and doing recon. In reality everything works well and has a purpose to being a pathfinder. And we aren't magically pulling stuff out of our pockets. Everything we use, you see. It's kind of perfect IMHO. I would add something like Gwent though to the non combat gameplay or do more uncharted style puzzles. I love the alien sudoku though. I just wish there was more it

The omni-tool scanner itself isn't really too bad, in my opinion. Sure, it's annoying to have to do it, and I would prefer if it were removed from the game, but it's not the end of the world. However, the person that decided the Nomad mining mechanic needed to exist should go step on a goddamn Lego.
Yeah, the Nomad mining is a lot more tedious than the scanner ever thought about being.
I actually enjoy all the mining and scanning and planet scanning and collecting. It sure beats the hell out of picking thousands of flowers!!

I have one problem with scanning, not nearly enough remnant research. milky way is common, hell I get that from cryo, helius is common and the gear doesn't fit my playstyle anyway. remnant I'm 3 marks levels behind on armor, 5 on weapons. and I've basically finished the game at 95% done and whats left is just some fetch quests and one minor mission I think got stuck. maybe I shouldn't have used gear with exp boosts early on.

I actually like it. With time you start to know what is worth scanning and what isn't, and it's a nifty world building tools. Among the variations of Batman's Detective Vision I've seen, the scanner is one of the better ones.
It's certainly better than the Fish Eyes Senses from TW3, I can tell you that.

The nice part is you eventually realize what's worth scanning, so you scan less. Also, yes, thankful for the alert of something to scan. Personally I like it. Being an explorer, scanning stuff. I'll take this kind of scanning over the ME2 planet scanning for instance.

I agree with OP. It's just plain boring and repetitive. Also it degrades replay value of the game. Because ok, in my first playtrough i will scan shit, to be able to build shit. But no way in hell i'm gonna rescan everything again in my next playtrough. Either with new game plus i'll have everything i researched previous game, or gibbed's save editor.

Got to be honest, I absolutely love the scanner! I find it really fun, I love the info it brings up about things. I think it's really well done.
I hated when people's complaints had lots of the RPG mechanics from ME1 stripped down or removed from the games. Right now in Andromeda, people who enjoy the crafting and scanning and mining etc, can enjoy it, and people who don't enjoy it can largely ignore it. It's the best of both worlds, everyone gets to be happy!
