It should show naked people. That's what it should do. *remembers the time I tried to scan a Krogan* No thanks you, I want my brain relative intact. For Op, as everybody else said, don't do it if you think it is boring. And it is not like it is hard to get credits and research data anyway. I only do it because I need want to know new stuff. Don't need mutation that leads to this: media.giphy.com/media/bPmBQyyRmm9u8/giphy.gif

Its Mass Effects version of Geralts witcher sense... I expected this would happen but its not bad. Farming research points is easy, just scan some objects when it says so, its as hard as pressing "E" to grab minerals.

I really like it tbh, I'm always popping out my scanner in the hope that I can learn something new about the world instead of gathering resources. It's a great world-building tool.

The omni-tool scanner itself isn't really too bad, in my opinion. Sure, it's annoying to have to do it, and I would prefer if it were removed from the game, but it's not the end of the world. However, the person that decided the Nomad mining mechanic needed to exist should go step on a goddamn Lego.
Yeah, the Nomad mining is a lot more tedious than the scanner ever thought about being.

I agree.
While there is a glowing G in the bottom left of the screen.....That only shows if you near something important or quest items to scan, so it DOESNT show when theres other non important but research giving things to scan.
It would be far better if it did show when any research giving items are near.
This does make it annoying if you actively looking for research points as you are constantly getting the scanner out every time you are in new areas.....and even some older areas bring new research point items to scan i have noticed.

How do you get research points without scanning?
I don't have the game. Just curious.

Research points are only used for crafting purposes.
If you don't want to do R&D, you can function perfectly fine with just loot.
What I like about scanning is that it gives you context for what you are scanning. It's fun to read the descriptions. It's better than the ping system in DAI imo.

You dont have to use that everywhere, it usually lights up when theres one object near that gives huge amoutn of points. The little points u have to scan urself tough. Its not mandatory unless you wanna craft, as you can buy or find blueprints urself easily.

For some reason, Bioware just can't get resource collection quite right in Mass Effect. It's been different in every game. Maybe if everything scannable for points glowed, or something, just so we don't have to run the scanner over every single thing. Sometimes you can sort of tell something might be scannable, but more often I am wrong or I already scanned something like it and can't get the points again. Some tech I swear I have gotten points on more than once, too. If you thought spamming the area loot search button in Dragon Age: Inquisition was bad... It should also scan passively once you have it up. By that I mean you shouldn't have to press a button to scan, it should just automatically scan anything you move the scanning field over.

It's a interesting idea that I can imagine being done better. First, decouple it from research points so it's not a chore that player is obligated to do. Second, make as many things scannable as possible, all the plants, animal, rock, structures, etc. This will give people who like exploring something to deepen their immersion, while not making it a chore for everyone else.
Scanning should be rewarding experience on its own, and if you can't make it so then don't burden us with it by tying it some other feature.

I get a glowing ((G)) on my screen when something important is nearby that can be scanned. It only does this for plot-critical items.

Telling people not to scan is not a solution. It isn't optional content, you have to scan for most missions and even side quests to do them. You can't just not scan. It doesn't work that way. And yes it is a bad mechanic and yes its not fun.

And yes it is a bad mechanic and yes its not fun. The thing is that some people don't like it and some do. The times you need to scan for missions it is very easy and don't take much time. If people don't think it is fun to scan all the time, the solution is to not scan when it is not required by a mission. That it is a "bad mechanic" and "not fun" is your opinion. Apparently there is people that disagree. Could they make it easier? Sure they could just give everything you need to make everything. Or why not just give you all the weapon and armor? That way people don't need to do anything.

My only real complaint is that you have to press a button to scan while scanning. I'd rather it was passive. You look at something with the scanner, it scans. The main reason this is annoying (on console) is that I have to remove my thumb from the aiming stick, so I can't position the scanner and actively scan at the same time Other than that, I'll echo that it only lets you know something nearby is scannable if it's quest-important. Random objects you can get points from don't do this. Since I'm OCD about finding ALL the info and getting as many points as I can, I'll end up scanning virtually every area of the game. That can get tedious.

I like it. It's gimmicky, but for some reason I never get tired of it. I think it's because of the design of the scanner, it looks so detailed and it adds to the lore of Mass Effect.

Some tech I swear I have gotten points on more than once, too. If you thought spamming the area loot search button in Dragon Age: Inquisition was bad... I vastly prefer the loot search button in DA:I. I mapped it to a thumb button on my mouse. I can literally click it as I run along with no loss of speed. The ME:A scanner, however, holsters my weapon, slows my run to a slow walk, and puts this huge screen in front of my face. I don't recall if you can do a DA:I loot search from horseback (since I almost never rode them) but I know for a fact you cannot scan the area from inside the Nomad.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I'd rather Bioware just dropped crafting entirely from its single player games. I never quite understood the appeal of crafting. What difference does it make whether your character gets a weapon or piece of armor from crafting, loot, or a vendor? The end result is entirely the same, except looting and purchasing from a vendor don't require you to engage in time sink resource gathering. It's not like your character actually makes the item either. I could do without gathering elfroot or minerals. The only place where crafting works IMO is in MMOs, where some time sinks are needed to prevent player markets from being flooded by crafted items, which would render them near worthless to sellers. This. /facepalm It's not as if they can't make a game where you nickname your weapon. Here's my usual routine for going into the Development side of R&D, "Let's see, make level 4 of this, and ..... Nope. Have every other material in the known world, hundreds of them. But not enough to make the weapon I want. Great." This is the point to crafting. To make the stuff that you want. Except, when they hide the shit that is used to make what you want is when it becomes fruitless and vile.

I wish there was more stuff to scan just to learn more about things. I am surprised at what we cant scan like the Kett transport and their big mining impact drilling thingy majjigy.
Also with the way the crafting system is set up I end up sticking with the same stuff and therefore a bunch of unused research. I scan more out of habit than need.

It would have made a little more sense to have some sort of Detective Vision/Eagle Vision sort of thing because you have SAM implanted into your brain basically in complete control of you. Or because you have a space helmet on and the scanner could be in the helmet all Iron Man style.

Yup agreed. It would have been nice if SAM automatically scanned everything withing a 5-10 meter radius, etc. This. And the only time SAM needs to say something is when a plot point comes in range. Aside from that, shut it, I'm looking through my sniper scope for bad guys, you are wrecking my concentration.
