For some characters and stories, they only work a certain way. Personally I think a way that could work better is if it was more something like this:
A. Explicit sex: Some romances and stories only work or at least work best if sex is involved. B. Explicit no-sex: Some romances and stories only work or at least work best if no sex is involved. C. FtB/Optional sex: Some romances and stories are able to work both with or without sex.
If a game had say 8 romances, I would like to see something like 2 LIs are in Group A, 2 LIs are in Group B, and 4 LIs are in Group C and have them spread evenly over f/f, f/m, m/f, m/m since that way everyone gets options.

We can make that more efficient, I think. A playersexual system where the romances have an explicit sex path, a no sex path or a friendship path. Come to think of it, the former two may not actually need to be that separate. Doesn't Cora have a different scene if you turn down sex? In previous games if you turned down sex it was pretty much "oh, ok, guess we're done" right? But if you could choose between say a date scenario that ends in sex and one that doesn't, would that be acceptable?

I have a question. Does anyone think that the sex scenes between Ryder and any of the alien characters comes off as 'too casual'? Like Ryder and one of the aliens decides to have sex and bam. They just go for it, no questions, concerns or even kinky stuff brought up.
Take the sex scene with Vetra for example. I remember thinking about what sex with a Turian would be like and the potential risks that were involved since their skin is very tough and pointy. Since her sex scene is one of the many fade-to-black sequences, I kept wondering to myself. Why not actually use this sequence to build a bit of character? Like showing Vetra being nervous about how she interacts with Ryder and vice versa. Nothing too explicit has to be stated or shown, but giving both of these characters a moment where they try to figure out the differences between them would have made for one heck of sweet and tender moment that Mass Effect hasn't really explored in the past. Now of course you can mention Liara and Peebee with the Asari bonding, but that's too easy and even in both cases doesn't really go anywhere.

jeyl not for my Sara and Jaal from what I saw. It takes like forever to romance that guy and when they do commit, they share a simple kiss in his room and hold hands. Later in banter you find out Liam is teaching Jaal how to please Sara and when he takes her to Aya, he asks if she wants to be with him that way. If you agree, he then pleasures her like he was shown, but the shyness and awkwardness of them seeing each other naked felt pretty natural. After sex they have some kinky talk about it too.

Eh, not really since then that excludes certain types of stories being told on both sides. For the majority of romances that does works, and really you just explained Group C in my post.

Eh, not really since then that excludes certain types of stories being told on both sides. Like what? Well, to give an example of each case: A romance that requires sex would be something like Morrigan's since it involves conceiving a child or a character who enters a casual sexual relationship which then deepens into a real one. A romance that requires no sex would be something like an asexual character or a person who for some reason like religion or culture abstains until marriage.

A romance that requires no sex would be something like an asexual character or a person who for some reason like religion or culture abstains until marriage. Couldn't you combine those, say based on waiting until marriage for children? Thus making the diverging choice more meaningful as well (i.e. choose to marry the person instead of just whether you'll have sex with them or not). Of course, not everyone will want a romance where sex is dependent on marriage or implies children. I think you could make it work both ways like so: -character abstains from sex until marriage but wants children. -choice to marry now-> sex scene and possibly conception -choice to wait and marry later-> no sex but other intimacy to take its place.

While I appreciated what little moments that romance gave these two characters when it came to their intimate relationship, it still felt like it was playing it safe. Why not have this "how to please" conversation with Jaal himself with multiple choice responses? And maybe have Sara ask how she can *clears throat* please him? Gosh, this is so awkward talking like this on an online forum. Basically, yes. What we've got is ok, but this installment needed to do more.

They went a bit further (like his devour line), but yeah, now we need more intimate talks with our lover.

My thoughts are really more of a middle ground: If you're going to have sex, be polite: keep the door closed and don't wake the neighbors.

Vetra involves helping her sister, going mountain climbing and having dinner. Three dates before they do the nasty!

Insofar as the apparent obligation to put sex scenes in a game goes, yeah. But I still question the necessity. Heck, in DAI, people were saying Josephine wasn't a "real" romance because you didn't get to see her nipples. I hated that. I get that sex can be an important part of a relationship, but I wish some of those people would respect that it goes the other way too. Keep on dreaming.

Gosh, this is so awkward talking like this on an online forum. Basically, yes. What we've got is ok, but this installment needed to do more. Yeah, in my Jaal romance save, I never heard the pre-sex banter with Liam because I didn't take Liam out much at all in that playthrough. (My Jaal run came right after a Liam romance run, so I was using Liam less to give the other companions a chance, since I took him literally everywhere in his save). So now I feel like I've missed an important part of the romance for Jaal. My first thought on seeing the sex scene with Jaal was to wonder if oral sex was common to the angara or if Jaal had watched some educational vids. Having some discussion between the actual participants would be nice, though you could certainly add to that with some extra banter.
