They didn't have to. This is literally the stupidest criticism of the game out there and that's saying something. She was a tertiary character that you had to go out of your way to find and then go out of your way to find out she was trans.

I honestly never even realized Hainly was a trans female. Krem was obvious because of how he looked and the voice was Jennifer Hale. Yeah, I remember Hainly gave a previous name she had. Honestly, I never looked at it that closely and just figured she wanted a new life and thus gave herself a new identity. I will agree that the overall execution of the character was bad, considering no trans person would ever act this way or tell their life story to a stranger. It was definitely a blunder on BioWare's part.

Oh my god, why has this become such a big deal? People are so outraged by an obscure character with two lines that Bioware felt the need to apologize for it? Get over it already.

Yeah, but what is more of an indication of society? The fact that people could get offended by it or Bioware actually taking the time to release a statement apologizing for people being "hurt" by the characters presentation in the game?

I fail to see how one minor npc is a big deal that people got all stirred up over them.

Probably because they handled Krem a lot better. I think folks are missing the point of the whole issue here. The problem is the presentation is an actual criticism of tokenism, which Hainly represents. Krem doesn't fit that stereotype of tokenism. One reason for that is the fact we saw him a lot more than Hainly, but it is also due to characterization and sort of earning that story from him.

Not sure what you mean? They're both as bad as each other. It's stupid that people are upset by it but I didn't think it was this big a deal, and it's stupid that Bioware decided to acknowledge it.

Bioware doesn't have to respond to everything that offends a very small amount of people and this goes for real life too. If I tried to not offend anyone then I would have to seclude myself completely from society. It's those people's problem if they are so easily offended.

My thoughts?
Bioware created a trans character. Some people had problems with her. Bioware addressed the problems. I don't see why there should be much drama from any sides here.

I think there are a number of characters that do and say very stupid things, to the point where they insult my intelligence as part of the audience. I would hope that BioWare starts to fix all of them as well.

I honestly didn't notice the transgender part when talking to this character, though I did think it was a bit weird that all the random NPCs in Podromos started telling me their life story when I first met them. Instead of apologizing for offending anyone with that specific character, they should try to find more subtle ways of adding depth to NPCs in general.

People who have, throughout most of their lives, been disregarded or told they're overreacting end up annoyed at at studio that in the past had better representation of the only existing trans character in the game...
Bioware apologizes because it was a mistake...goes about fixing it...
People get angry that Bioware does something out of a desire to set things right with a community they care about (or if cynical...want to keep any outrage or scandal online to a minimum)
Sounds about right...

They're not apologizing for having included Hainly Abrams' character: they're apologizing for how they included her character. Basically, Bioware agrees with the criticism that her dialogue bit feels like a checklist attempt and so want to change it so it's more natural and not something she says completely unprompted.

The fact that they had to announce it and make a big deal out of it. Clearly a sign that they are trying to win a certain group over. This isn't a political campaign. Keep these sort of announcements out of the video game industry.

That is a sort of cheat for RPGs in the end though, asking random NPCs questions about themselves and whats going on in the world around them. Perhaps the issue is the volume being higher due to the large amount of NPCs?

Krem was much worse: explicit, unavoidable, patronizingly educational, and constraining in response. This character just was. It *is* dumb that a random person I just met would volunteer this information to me, but I just thought it was silly and went on with my life. I think a better way to do it would have been to have some character who is semi-important who just happens to be trans and that you find out about it in some indirect way: snooping in people's datapads perhaps, which is totally something Ryder does anyway.
