Horizon Forbidden West
I did some side quests today. For the not quite exactly companions. One of them was 1 level over what I was. First time I actually bother looking at the level requirements.
The other made me hear machine sings. It was...creepy despite all the NPCs saying it was beautiful. Don't let AI design machines I guess.

The PALE BEYONDI finished the game! I loved it! Took me around 12h, that's with reloading certain disaster weeks, so I guess a normal first run would be 10h. I lost more than half the crew... Only 11 people survived. But hey, halfway through the game I was convinced I was fucked and didn't expect to even make it to the VERY surprising end. I think the ending is very divisive. Or rather endings. It's what you find at the end that either has you groan and roll your eyes or go "Cool!". You can choose not to go and find the ship at all and not deal with all the drama. Choose your survival over the uncertainty of possibly missing the rescue ship to uncover the mystery... which is stupid and anticlimatic from a narrative perspective but you CAN decide, fuck it, I'm aborting this suicide mission and getting my people home. Obviously I chose to find out what this mission was all about and well... MASSIVE SPOILERS FOR THE WHOLE GAME I'm going to take you on the journey with me, saving the big reveal for last. It's a 4 act drama and the prologue ends with the ship getting stuck in the ice, naturally, and the captain and some of the crew making a run for it with some of the supplies... they are just gone all of a sudden, and there's a vote who becomes the new captain based on how much people like you. I think it's scripted that you win my one vote. Half of the crew is still loyal to the original captain. I made matters worse by not lying to the crew that the captain named Hunt died which really affected morale and kept main characters loyal and very much not accepting your authority. Act 1 ends when the ship finally gets crushed by the ice and you are forced out onto the ice... You have a limited time frame to get most of the supplies out of the ship before it sinks. I did OK on that but failed to rescue spices that give a buff to food. Every time you raid a storeroom it gets flooded and people start freezing to death and you need to pump the deck clear of icy water. So this is all takes several weeks and at some point you run out of time... I did manage to salvage a rifle that gets you +1 on hunts and other supplies but I wonder if the missing food buff was a major drawback. In act 2 morale is low and the leader of the sailors is singing songs of mutiny... You have different ways to deal with it. I talked to this guy the wrong way for too long so he hated my guts. His brother is less of an asshole. Eventually your arrogant unlikeable advisor tells you to seize his accordion, didn't work. Next option is to smash it. Didn't do it because at that point I had a suspicion that my advisor is telling me all the wrong things. You have to be humble and tell this guy you're trying to live up to being a captain and eventually he stops the song. And then I was also lucky that this finally pushed his brother, the cook, to become loyal to me because I let his brother be. So the mutiny didn't happen but it was a close call, I think. Week 14 my first sailor froze to death... I was really struggling with the resource management. I should have rationed food better too. Once the coal from the ship runs out your only source of fuel is burning animal fat. But of course I also needed the animals as food... Maybe I should have slaughtered the entire penguin migration instead of letting some live, thinking if I kill them all I will eventually run out of peguin to hunt. The best food source are big sea lions but hunting those always results in injury, so it's risky. You can only treat 2 people in the medbay. So If too many people have frostbite or scurvy, they will die the next week if untreated. Injury does not kill, just keeps the crew member from working. So you have to play a tight numbers game and I suck at that. Having the penguins in camp was so cute though! I'm also not good at making tough choices so most of the time I gave people what they wanted. Each morning is request session and you decide if you grant requests or deny them. One time the cook wanted to have a feast for a special day to boost morale but I couldn't spare the rations. There are a ton of events you can take a gamble on. Often it pays off. Like digging a hole for ice fishing. Btw fish is how you increase your dog count. You need dogs to go hunting and also find reasearch spots. Research points are needed to raid certain migration spots for extra food. You had to move camp once after the ice around the ship cracks and then you spend act 2 preparing for winter. Your specialists argue about how long you can stall and use the brief summer to hunt as much as possible. 2 weeks or gamble on 5 weeks? I chose somewhere in the middle which pissed them both off, lol. This game is as much resource management as it is relationship management. I managed to get most people on my side. This matters for the epilogue of each specialist (regular sailors are not mentioned if they survive). You get to know these people, they get comfortable with each other. I was totally invested in them all. If somebody dies their friends will say a few words about them and how they'll be missed. Summer ended with not nearly enough rations so I thought I was done for. A huge tarp was put up and everyone huddled under it trying not to freeze to death. The cold gets worse each week which means you burn more and more fuel to keep alive. Now of course that tarp gets holes all the time and you need to assign like half the crew to fixing them. Even though the game tells you there is no more hunting in winter you can in fact still hunt. And I had really had to. Of course now more and more people came back freezing. And in week 18 I lost another person. Sigh. Shorting rations led to more and more malnutrition and then scury. And I was running out on lemons to cure them. And the medbay was overflowing as well. The good thing was that the weeks pass faster in winter. So being almost out of fuel at week 20 knowing we'll have to hold on until week 38 didn't mean certain death after all. It's 3 more cycles and then it's suddenly time to abandon the camp and get on 3 lifeboats, making our way to the spot where the rescue ship is supposed to come pick us up. I made one huge mistake I should have reloaded because I think that was what got most people killed at the end. A sailor claimed to have heard noises of a great beast and wanted to go hunt it. I was warned this was probably a bad idea but I was hoping it was one of those things that sound bad but end up saving you. So I agreed and they all came back injured and I didn't have enough time to patch them up. Oh and our aging navigator had a heart attack and I had to decide whether or not to let him lead the life boat journey or have him sit back and save his strength. I made the wrong choice and this had repercussions later... And as I had feared, the dogs couldn't go with us... So I had to go and shoot them or let them starve out on the ice. The dog handler begged to keep one of them and I said yes, of course. Of course this wasn't the worst part. I had to burn the dogs for fuel.......... You can also eat them. But that demoralises the crew. Yeahhhh. So then you are tasked to distribute the crew on the 3 boats. The key is not too have to many injured in one boat. Problem was at this point half the crew was freezing and/or injured. I made sure to have the boy and his dad on the main boat where all the healthy specialists are. Had a very bad feeeing about this but off we went. Aaand we got caught in a storm and 2 of the boats sank. We arrived on land, our navigator still alive. BUT then the sweet but stupid photographer wanted to take a picture very close to a ledge. So OF COURSE she dropped the camera and almost went over the edge herself. You can either tell her to leave the camera or send her to retrieve it. I reloaded this event several times but no matter what I did, the navigator would always go get the camera with her and because his heart was weak from the boat trip where I didn't le thim rest, he didn't have the strength left to get up the rope again, so he died. But the photographer and the camera were saved. So apparently warning her in the prologue not to take dangerous pictures again didn't help. This always happens. To save the navigator he needs to not lead the boat trip back. Well, shit. The dog handler woman tries to sneak off with her one saved puppy. The dog is pregnant and this woman decided to start over with a new litter and survive somehow. Not sure what her plan was but you get a whole backstory on who she really is. Which was nice. I managed to defuse the situation and bring her back to camp. The party finds a cave and inside the cave is the mysterious missing ship! And what a sight that was... Here the game takes a very unexpected turn into the supernatural! Inside the ship is captain Hunt who abandoned the crew. His people died, he had to eat one of them. He's the only one left. He tells you that the tree is magical and he's stuck in a time loop! He tells you that if you eat the peach from the tree you can go back in time and try to save everyone. Hunt never managed. He tried hundreds of combinations, made different people first mate but they all failed. The game obviously expects you to fail and not manage to save everyone the first time. Some people actually did and saw no reason to go back in time. At the same time Hunt tells you to destroy the tree. He does it every time before he goes back. You finally learn who the mysterious benefactor is. The tinned peach company, But more specifically, a woman named Minerva. She lost her husband and the implication is that she might want the tree to go back in time and save him. A lot of things are left vague and you have to decide for yourself what it means. In any case, at this point you can either complete your original mission and sail the ship with the tree on it back and hand it over to Minerva or destroy the tree and the ship with it and take the lifeboat out to sea and get help. You can decide to either take a sample from the tree to learn its secrets as a kind of middle ground. Regardless of your choice you can eat or not eat the fruit beforehand. This allows you to basically go back in time to any week and try to save everyone. (Before, the save tree, loving how the big twist is right there in the menu!, was linear and if you go back to redo a week all weeks after that are gone. Now you can try different branches.) The way I understood it, you might go back with the knowledge of what you did wrong the first time. I will have to test this because I WILL replay and try to save everyone this time. So basically this game is a crossbreed between the Netflix series Dark and the NG+ feature of a certain game I played last year. So, I ate the peach and burned the tree... Nobody should get hold of the power to go back in time and mess with history. Your assistant is VERY unhappy about it. He went on this trip somehow knowing what we'd find. He studied botany. Not sure exactly how he knows if everyone is stuck in a time loop and Hunt kept resetting it. I have to replay, probably already forgot the explanation. It was very late when I finally finished the game. You then decide what to do with Hunt and your assistant. I had them both jailed. You can leave them in the cave to rot or set them free. So then I hopped on the one remaining life boat with the dog handler and found help. This saves the remaining crew. You get a nice epilogue about your surviving specialists which changes depending on your choices. I was delighted to see that the timid doctor and the photographer became an item. Very cute. Was kinda hoping that my character could hook up with the dog handler, they eventually built trust and it was sweet in a very understated way. But nope. Not possible. Hunt rots in prison. I kinda regret this because technically he was just trying to save the crew and needed to make it to the tree and reset if things went bad again. Will set him free next time. The assistant apparently walks free regardless of my choice and lives happily ever after. OK then. Really couldn't stand that guy. THE END Apparently if you sail the tree back you meet Minerva, so I'm looking foward to doing that next. It was one hell of an emotional ride for me. I cried towards the end. The music was mesmerizing during the big reveal. I highly recommend this game. A friend of mine was so intrigued she bought it for Switch the next day. She's a huge boardgame nerd and The Pale Beyond feels a lot like a boardgame compaign. It would certainly be doable to do the survival aspect. The relationship stuff is what only works in a videogame and was aruguably the best thing about the game. There is no voice acting but I still grew to like the crew and their different personalities. 9/10 for an indie game. Very nice art style and music. Ending might be disppointing to some people but I liked it all right.

Fallout 4This game has one of the worse character creators that I have ever experienced. So, naturally, probably spent about an hour in it. Of course some of this was the wife's influence to since she actually did help with the CC process in this case and what I was trying to do which got a little bit more involved. Even took the controller out of my hand. As an aside bit of mixed feelings on this to as I am not sure I want her to actually design these characters or just advice me in the advice when I do it myself. I suppose the latter is the idea here especially for Veilguard, but then she is rather good at it and hands on. Other thing given my typical MO for RPGs, some variance not withstanding, but I do tend to play at least one character concept male and one character concept female then decide which one to run through as a canon character for a third PT, just in this case I still don't have all the DLC so...decided to recreate Clint the Sole Survivor. Given the weaknesses of the CC and my wife's input this ended up being a stage one from the ground up recreation, kind of kept some of the ideas, but well apparenrtly I gas lit myself into thinking Hawkeye was a blond and not a brunette so...yeah there is that. Quite proud in the end gave him the Ronin hair style to and well, he does not look much like Jeremy Renner but he does look like kind of the grizzled yet hollywood super hero war vet that I always imagined him as first. Though I must say me and her had a lot of fun doing this and we cracked a lot of jokes at the expense of the game and the dialogue. I don't remember most of them by now...que sera. First thing I generally noticed is get in the game and, another complaint about this game, seems to be quite limited on the quests sometimes. This did prompt the conversation from the wife 'you don't explore enough!' and to be fair I do like my exploration to be a little more guided side, but this game has always seemed week on the quests. But imagine my surprise when they added a whole lot of quests for this remaster. So look forward to diving into that, but just don't know the where and the when yet. Haven't done too much though I am happy I am up to level 4. But essentially met with the minutment, defeated the Death Claw, and moved everyone into Sanctuary. Decided to get Lady Killer, the Cap Trader one, and also...the one where you see weaknesses through Vats so far. Also discovered the first perception bobblehead. Otherwise the remaster seems to be off to a descent start so far... no haptics but they have really worked on the sound design it seems. Things pop a lot more. Graphics have gotten a slight face lift, for better and worse. Things look a little better overall and pop, brighter (which could be just my settings), and things look cleaner. But then this is still the old engine...a bit...Mama Murphy's facial expressions are...something to behold. Long term I will be wrangling with how I am going to handle this playthrough. Like didn't think the settlement system...well I did like the idea but not sure I like the grind and the execution. And like the idea behind the Minutemen but also don't really care for ambient quests so...just not sure how much time I will be pouring into it. Especially since I do want to play both this and DAI before Veilguard comes out and would prefer to do another complete playthrough of Inquisition, especially if I don't have saves for every main story mission like I would want to. So might make this playthrough reletively short, but then ...who knows.

FC25 sounsd like it's going t obe interesting as it sounsd like they're undoing some of the mistakes mad eby FC24 as intro's are back in the game this year for example. They're adding dynamic weather which includes wind apparantly which can affect th eball trajectory when taking freekicks an dcorners and such as wel as other types of weather like rain o rsno w and such tha thav ebeen in the game before. Also they've added women's career mode so w ecan pla y career mod ewith women as well now. I don't know if th ewind wil laffec tth ehair physics on the girls give nthe strand hair system they're already using but i tsounds interesting non eth eless Saw some moer info on FC2 5today and it's made me really excited because they've replaced Volta wit hsomething moer meaningful they're calling Rus hwhich is gettin gincorporated int oal gam emodes includin gcareer so we don' tnecessary have to send your youngsters out on loan if you think the yhav epotentia las i ncaree rmode every coupl eof months or so there's going t obe 5a sid etournaments which you can use t otrain your youth players up and give them a chance. I di dhave m ydoubts as to whether I'd get FC25 bu tseeing all this info is winning me over. Trails of Cold Steel 3Wrapped up chapter 2. Leaving the boss fight for the next day was a very solid move. Time will tell if leaving Chapter 3 for the next day will prove as a good move. Also I'll find out if I fibbed in not scanning the second boss. Probably. Just got caught up in the excitement and don't feel like redoing the fight. It wasn't hard perse but takes long and would be better suited for a lower difficulty replay. Cutscenes were amazing though. HadesFor the fourth time made it past the final boss. And for the third time they caught these fists. Was very, very close though. He ate through three second chances and few more hit's and I'd be toast. Only other weapon I've made it out with is the blade. Done fairly decent with the gattling gun, but not feeling the spear and don't have the skill needed for the bow. Also the Minotaur did me a solid in unlocking the final aspect of the fists. Maiming damage is so nice. Catching these claws.

For some reason this PT my PC is getting hammered too, I hate my fans being too loud and gladly sacrifice performance and picture quality for lower fan speed but nothing I have done so far will drop the fan speeds. I resorted to reinstalling MSI but even resetting the fan curves has not helped for some reason.

Horizon Forbidden WestThe "Thebes" quest was weird. I feel a few too many quests are trying to be both funny and serious at the same times and things don't quite land right...in this case, it landed in a volcano (sorta).
Oh and Starfield version of "get outta here, this place is exploding" was done better. But I guess I don't get stuck in pixels as much in Starfield (I was stuck in a wall at some point, well half of Aloy's body was).
Anyway, just a few more main quests to do. I finished a few more squatter quests. I mean the "companions" are kinda squatting the base, they seems to dump more stuff everything I return there, so they shall now be known as the squatters.

I mean the "companions" are kinda squatting the base, they seems to dump more stuff everything I return there, so they shall now be known as the squatters. Yeah Thebes didn't work for me either, I found the whole Quen culture a bit strange TBH and the whole Seyka thing and Aloy's sudden loss of emotional control and late teen hormonal angst was just over written. "The Squatters" I liked the base and the companions and that they had their time in the sun but weren't forced on you as well. I also thought the base was pretty cool and I liked how it evolved over time and as new people arrived.

Horizon Forbidden WestThe "Thebes" quest was weird. I feel a few too many quests are trying to be both funny and serious at the same times and things don't quite land right...in this case, it landed in a volcano (sorta).

Fallout 4
It always gets me and is a surprise to me...Fallout always seems to be a consistent example of you start off as a pathetic weakling barely scraping by at the start, foraging for supplies left and right, lurching from one fire fight to another...and then you end up the thing being an utter bad ass. Of course the other thing is I do it to myself as well, no powerarmor, no mini gun. May be going to try and do some differences this time, though I will ultimatley be after the Silver Shroud costume eventually. Though also going on after and maybe equipping some of the raider leather armor.
Continuing on with my usual MO with this game of making a beeline right towards Diamond City. I know the 'main campaign' of this game can be kind of short so its a little bit of a risk but probably not going to get Nick quite yet...just poke my head in there to get access to the shops in thre. But then I usually do meander down there and investigate things. Had a couple of deaths on the way down to and the vagaries of the save system makes me want to turn down the difficulty maybe but then maybe not, just gotta save alot...and get used to how quickly your health can go down to properly manage it. In the process of the meandering though I bumped into a quest I never had before that also unlocked a random merchand. 'Trudy' was being besieged by a pair of chem dealers who wanted payment from her since her son was on drugs. After dying a couple of times, first didn't expect to just get into combat, second tried to threaten them and that didn't work out. Third time I learned the awesomeness of cover even in this game and picked my shots a lot better. It worked. Second bit bumped into Paladin Dance and co down in Cambridge and went off with him to get the tech he needs...also heck of ironic timing that we bumped into Institute Synths given his identity. And I do suspect the mysterious readings Haylen picks up is beaming tech.
Funny moment of the playthrough for the evening bumped into a patrol in Lexington, Raiders and Ghouls, said something to the effect of 'I recognize that noise' when it came to the Ghoul growling and moved to engage...but then when I went into Vats I heard a very distinctive whisitling sound so I was like "I definitley recognize that noise!' and tried to nope on out of there. Don't think I can deal with a fatman this early though not sure there was a nuclear explosion this time but I wasn't taking any chances. Will probably go up to Lexington eventually.
Oh and for the moment I am looting everything that is not nailed down, at least being a lot more aggressive in it. I sometimes can get a little conservative given how much there is to loot in Fallout and the weight restrictions but again need caps, need supplies, and in case I decide to do anything with my settlements...or crafting at all...this is a good way forward. Do like how you get experience from the crafting of things so mayyyybbbbeee.

Still playing Forspoken atm but in Tanta Prav's area now looking for tree resin Debating whether I should pla ysome Fifa for a bi tjust in case I get invited to Beta test FC25 this year bfeoer I throw mysel fat Mass Effec tt ostart m yME/DA cycle. It'll largel ydepend on how long i ttakes m et obeat Forspoken though. Given the DLC isn' t supposed t obe that long I doubt it'll take too long a sForspooken isn't that long a game despite how much disc space it takes up. As you'd expec for a game that takes up 150GB i twould be longer than it is.

Making progress in Ghost of Tsushima....really enjoying it (as much as any other big game I've played: Jedi Survivor, Forbidden West, Fallen ORder, Zero Dawn, Shadows of the Tomb Raider. The more I play, the better I'm getting at Combat (not taking near as much damage) because I'm getting the hang of parrying/blocking etc which makes the combat more strategic vs Button-Mashy and me just totally taking as much or more of a beating than I doll out. So timing the parrying, then moving in for those fast counter-attacks is just so much more dynamic and fun. Also, really liking the story and graphics.

Horizon Forbidden WestAnd it's over! Bad guys dead. World "saved". The main story writing wasn't that great, especially the villains. Also, I didn't get to at least punch Sylens, but I think I would have preferred to shove him off something very high. Or maybe drop his ass from very high from my sunwing. I wasn't picky with it...boo game for not giving that to me.
Last mission was very wonky with the climbing points too. Sometimes it just didn't want to do anything, despite the game showing the yellow lines a few inch from Aloy's face.
I'm not sure if I'm going to do Burned Shore. I'm kinda tired of the game combat. Just not that fun with all the knocking back. Exploration is somewhat amusing, but also over-designed with the amount of traversal blocking features over more interesting environmental puzzle. I feel like the game tried to do too much sometimes.
Oh and way too many shit automatically going into the "tool". Took like 30 seconds to go through, super annoying while in combat to access something and even if you "cleaned" it up, opening chest often re-adding the thing you just removed.

Burning Shores isn't that long especially if you just do the main story, it has some fun elements and maybe the combat especially the end fight might be more your appetite re combat.

Fallout 4Well down to easy I go. Its been so long since I've played this game. Started in with Danse at Arcjet. And turning it on a bunch of SYnths just leapt down from the roof all DA 2 style in endless waves until I succombed. I missed the whole 'burn them alive with the engine thing'. With Paladin Danse in, which all he got is a little bit singed...wonder if that says anything about anything. But still, kind of odd set up. I think its been fairly well commented on, or at least I think I have commented on it at various times, that the faction system in FO 4 is not the best and not ideal. Probably more on that later but here at the beginning...its quite interesting that, at least for the Brotherhood but I am sure it applies to the rest of the factions, that they really front load and start you having to join these organizations from the outset of their arcs. This means, in a practical sense, you pretty much are going to betray someone should you not go along with it. Except for maybe the Minutemen but Garvey isn't that bad of a sort so even then. SHould've perhaps had the joining of each org happen later when you could have made an informed choice. But then maybe it still would've been effectively the same and I am blowing smoke out my butt From there did the first quest of the new stuff that dropped in the beginning of the game and it wound up taking me to yet another merchant in the middle of nowhere. Hmm. I do wonder if they also decided to add more merchants so I don't have to rely just on Diamond City...and that one place of which the name I forget. But then from there we can go through supplies quite quickly. 'Oh I am fine with my sixty bullets'. 'Crap I am running out of ammo.' In this process though I did pick up my first 'long rifle' which was a pipe sniper rifle. Gonna get it replaced as soon as I find a good .308 rifle at least but for the meantime it means I have to keep my .38 rounds instead of selling them. Got to the quest area and it seemed the raiders were fighting a little Civil War where the second merchant was so had to fight through them, and there was a LOT of them. But eventually worked my way through it *cough*. And surprise surprise the guy who was kind of a jerk to him is the one he stole the plans from and set up shop on his own. Though the first guy was also concerned about him so just, kind of a misunderstanding. Kind of.
