Borderlands 3
COntinuing on with the campaign with the wife.
And so much got done in a way. Not enough in others.
First mission on the list was doing a side quest where we plugged a head into a digital simulator in order to rescue the friend's memory of what's his face who used to run the Sun Smashers and then she betrayed him to the COV. And the whole screen was painted in a blue light all the way which was painful and hard to see through. In the end though we had to collect memories in the way which was also kind of awesome in a way since it dove tailed with my Inquisitor collecting her memories in the Fade. Anyways though it ended in a really weird spot since at the end of it we managed to pull her out of the digital simulatation with her full body and everything. But she was also the head in her hand...which was also talking and sentient. I know we can replicate vehicles and stuff but this seems a bit much.
For the bigger arc trying to get us off of Pandora and even succeeding in doing so. Going around and collecting a bunch of materials for our ship and what not before we left. But then the kicker happened. The big bads of these games continue to be a hyper annoying look on influencers. Actually probably best place to talk about it but they also made a 'fan video' later on in the play session where they celebrated the accomplishment I am about to suggest but they did some really...old timey sounding music like silent era movie cliche stuff and effects. I half wonder if Gearbox couldn't have gotten anything newer for copyright. Sure they are trying to satirize the whole influencer YouTube/ Twitch streamer thing by making a carcature of it but this just seemed so...off base because its not technological. Anyways after getting all the supplies and stuff the bandits attacked our launch site and we got seperated from Lilith because plot...and it turns out that the lady Siren influencer Tyreen also is a bit of a magic sucker. So she was able to absorb all of Lilith's power, our big sirent ally for several games. Still though we were able to save her life despite a tense cutscene and I at least was a little pissy running and gunning trying to reach her. It actually does do a pretty good job of establishing the physical threat these two possess as we have effectively Worfed Lilith who was a big component of the last few games, similar to what Jack did where I left off in Borderlands 2...but they are just so annoying and so far not charasmatic...where Jack oozed Charisma from BL 2 veryopening scene.
With us on the ship though time for some more Claptrap shannagans for the most annoying character in existance. He plotted a jump to get us away from Pandora and on the way to our first planet...and miscalculated which knocked out the gravity and caused a hull breach which he plugged...with his butt. Then we had to run around fixing the ship before we could get on our way. Despite this it was actually pretty funny with Claptrap and it was a great way for a game with the tone of Borderlands to introduce us to the ship, the crew, our vendors, and the new mechanics present in all of it. I approve. I also thought it was funny that Claptrap mentioned something about the stars going up his ass as he warped out.
Our first stop ended up being to Promethea and was really curious how this game would handle the different areas and just how different they will be. It has been a big bugaboo of mine that I am not sure any game has really gotten right yet but each new area...like if we are talking about a different planet or a different country would almost require very different culture. Different foods. Different games. Whole different out looks. And games have done good at parts of this like Horizon Forbidden West did have on brand food in each area that you could eat (but then had the problem of the passives really didn't merit their constant use) and granted this would require a really serious undertaking for writing and programming...but here we are, again. And I think they did do a pretty good job. Promthea is a city scape and the loot boxes...heh...reflect that.
The plot angle is us going around to save the planet that has been invaded by another corporationm, Maliwan, right now maybe one of my favorite weapon makers, is trying to take over the planet run by Atlas. We are here and Lilith reasons that Atlas would make a good ally in our fight against the COV because, logically, since they have been there the longest that they would know where the Vault is. Naturally the COV decides to help out Maliwan in their occupation. Except this does not make sense to me. Like maybe Maliwan had the upper hand and what not but the game kind of indicates that the Tyreen twins and the bandits they brought is what is really helping Maliwan suceed...and Lilith is right that Atlas may have more info on the vaults...which the twins want...so why help Maliwan? Just so they can oppose us.
And of course we get there and instantly turn the tide as well in a way in this corporate war. The resistance feels like Trunks and co hiding from Goku black and we just rock up and start gunning down lots of people. Though there is also a definite difficulty spike which helps. But we first helped them retake their warhouse, then their corporate head quarters, then take out a Maliwan weapon depot...and hijack a Maliwan AI in order to gain vital intel. Coolest bit here much like the last game it looks like we are going to be running into the Vault Hunters from the last game. And the real treat, first up, the same character I played last time. Zero. Quite fun that he talks in Haiku. But we teamed up and really took the fight to them.
Mechanically this game does feel so much better then Borderlands two. The alternative fire weapons really add a lot of depth to gameplay and there is just so many of them to so there is a lot of gun variety to explore in this game. Wonder if they can keep it up for 80 hours though. Negative here is really struggling to aim the grenade launcher so going to look for an AR upgrade soon. Next part of it to is the upgrade system has really been changed around, you can now use money to buy inventory or what not. SO you actually have something to spend said money on. Prices are a bit much but then I guess inflation is a thing even in the future.
