Continued to motor through Rogue, picking up a couple of decent gear sets, completed all the upgrades on the Morrigan, all the View Points, cleared New York... Okay, now I'll get back to the main questline. Ooh you got the "Valhalla" set!!!!! I liked running around in that suit as it looked so out of place.

Alrighty... done. It was interesting to play a game from a Templar's perspective, and revisiting some of the older characters, even if it wasn't the most exciting time period to do it in. But it did hit a few good narrative notes along the way. And I agree that a fully upgraded Morrigan is a monster on the sea, and I never once got myself into trouble. Hell, I think I lost one full bar of ship health just once, and that was taking on the strongest fort and a number of ships at the same time. I got boarded once though! I didn't know that was a thing in these games. Shay's weapons were pretty much the same as in BF, but the grenade launcher was fun to use every now and then. The rope dart thing was still... useless though. Combat and parkour was serviceable, but didn't improve over BF. Especially wonky in close quarter fights, enemies shooting through cover, annoying jack-in-the-box assassins everywhere, bad camera movement in places (esp. tavern fights), etc.. I really leaned into the sleep/berserk darts in this one. Storyline aside though, it was a bit of a slog, but without the gorgeous landscapes of later games. These games all had that washed-out look to them. It felt more like padded out Black Flag DLC than anything else.

Hrungr I almost spoiled that for you then, I was about to respond to you meeting young Arno with "Soon to be young Arno the Orphan"!!!!! Yeah for all the grief it got at release it was all, well mostly fixed up and it is a beautiful game. For me the story was a bit weak and there were on PC for me at least issues with staying undetected due to LoS problems with the guards in nearby buildings.

Hrungr Glad you mostly enjoyed it. Care to join our Order? It was good to see that there were tempered Templars out there. Hatham even backs down at the end with Shay's reasonable argument. Though in the modern day segments, not so much. Eg. Otso gets reprimanded by Abstergo for not taking down an Assassin surrounded by school children. Then Otso in turn gives the protag that always classical choice of "Join or Die". Though the Assassins were just plain dumb here. Two cities fell from tampering with the same kind of Isu site, and yet they still went after a third. Twice is not a coincidence. Knowing that, they should have just hidden it all away or dumped the book and box at the bottom of the Atlantic. And somehow, just seeing the tech at the third site convinced them not to meddle with it (and ofc it ends up getting triggered anyway). Um...? Hrungr I almost spoiled that for you then, I was about to respond to you meeting young Arno with "Soon to be young Arno the Orphan"!!!!! Yeah for all the grief it got at release it was all, well mostly fixed up and it is a beautiful game. For me the story was a bit weak and there were on PC for me at least issues with staying undetected due to LoS problems with the guards in nearby buildings. I noticed LoS issues as well, even within the first couple of missions. And that anyone with a gun will blatantly open fire into crowds without batting an eye.

Sizeable crowds in this one, and some nice viewpoints... The crowd sizes were blamed for some of the early problems with lag etc. I think it's probably the prettiest and one of the most fun games in terms of climbing challenges and just because it is such a great recreation of Paris. It would be amazing to see London at some stage other than the Industrial revolution and the Ezio games re done with the superior graphics of today and better KBM controls.

Yah! Hrungr has made it to Unity. I'm curious to see what you think of this one. Most of my gripes involved the terrible bloat of online features and content locked behind CoOp. (CoOp wasn't ready at launch.) I honestly never experienced a single glitch until a year after the game had released. I think the PC crowd likely suffered most of the bugs. Even then, they seemed overblown, as is the way of the internet. They had them patched by day 3, if I recall correctly. Damage done by that point. I really like Unity. I think its visual style, parkour and navigation are the best of the entire franchise. This game, more than any other, made me feel like I was in control of an Assassin. I like Arno and his story holds up as well as any others in the series. I'm not sure why people feel he was boring or weak, but it's often said. They should've put all the effort used on those ultimately hollow side quests that cover the map (they're great for making lots of livres) into adding even more story. Some of the tools are way too effective. Those pretty much cover my gripes. Have fun.

As one of the PC Crowd there were some serious issues like the game just crashing when trying to interact with chests, severe lag, audio issues and as mentioned issues with loS. You'd have things like a guard in the building 100 metres away would see you through two walls and the object you were hiding behind breaking stealth, while the guard standing across the room couldn't see you and had the same LoS. Which was a pain because some of those missions doing it in stealth was compulsory to complete it. I think there were also issues with loggin in which delayed me playing it (and others) for over a week after release IIRC. More minor issues were with things like the stupid gold chests not being able to be looted or crashing the game when you tried to, Co-Op missions not allowing you to join etc. but ther was only one of those I couldn't solo. I think there were also issues with the club stuff but I never played them.

They ended up getting obliterated by hate-memes. It sounds like the anger was well placed. (The memes just make me roll my eyes.) I often wonder where the series would be if they'd launched Unity properly. I like that the series has been rejuvenated, and think many of the changes are for the best. Unity has a lot of good features, though, that might've taken things in other directions. We'll never know where that might've been. Syndicate had strong characters and a fun story, but the gameplay was terrible. After Unity, it felt to me like a huge step backward in every way. And so here we are. All things considered, I can't complain.

Yeah Syndicate I actually enjoyed but it certainly felt like a step backwards for me and whilst I liked Origin a lot the combat was too much hard work for me. It will be interesting to see where they go with Valhalla in terms of what they pick up again from Origins and Keep from Odyssey.

Hrungr, getting the Phantom Blade ASAP was good. It really improves Arno's options. All of the Café Theatre stuff is good. The quests are solid, and the financial rewards, both short-term and long-term, are great. My favorite weapon setup is probably sword and pistol, but the long gun is way to get to the best gear quickly with half the cost. You can get a good long gun for 25K, IIRC. Then, you're good until you can buy the best long gun. Of course, that's me talking after countless hours with the game. I'm pretty sure I experimented with everything before arriving at my cost-efficient progression path. To unlock skills more quickly, you can play both types of CoOp missions solo. In fact, the only way to unlock all skills is to complete those missions. They're pretty fun, with a few standouts, in my opinion. I miss running around Paris with Fraternité Parisienne, my Club.

One thing I hated about Unity, and even more so in Syndicate, was how they severely limited non-lethal ways to deal with enemies. And I find it funny how in Unity the non-lethal weapons are the weapons that in reality would most likely kill someone since they're things like maces.

I remember looking at the weapons list the other day, and it had me scratching my head. Like, how are pistols lethal, but rifles are non-lethal? How are these weapons non-lethal? What are those - nerf spikes?

I really liked the spear in Unity, swords are nearly always my fallback but I remember using the spear to get the achievement for using it (IIRC) and never changed back. There was only one Co-Op mission I couldn't do solo but others said they did, it was timed and I just couldn't quite beat the timer.
