Just got the Crusader today. My questions to you:
What's it like? What builds is it good for? What are the advantages (if any) over other shotguns?

Unless you are on PC and can fix the firing mechanism, don't bother.
Other than the stupid firing mechanism, the gun has a lot of potential, I can't stand the way it fires where it was aimed, instead of where it is aimed, which kills it for me. Otherwise, probably a great gun.

I love it on the asari infiltrator. It takes a little time to get used to using because it doesnt have a spread but shoots one pellet.

The most absurd abuse of the crusader I have ever seen:
Geth Engineer, don't know the build the player was an ace. I do know he had Drill Ammo 3 with shredder mod and HVB, and while he didn't cast a lot, he didn't need to. Wall hax + dat penetration = lol.

The Crusader is my highest-level ultra-rare, I have it at level IX. I've been using it since it was level I, I like it a lot. It doesn't behave anything like a regular shotgun, it's more like a Carnifex/Paladin on steroids.
+1 for equipping it on a Huntress. Because your aim needs to be precise, you can use Dark Channel as a stagger to keep the nasty thing still while you blow its head off.
I'd suggest hipfiring it, the recoil is much more manageable and it's pinpoint accurate anyway.
The best mods in my experience are the thermal clip upgrade and the extended barrel. It has 50cm of innate cover piercing. Drill ammo works very well if you want to wallhax using it. Because of the double hits, drill ammo Crusader wrecks Phantoms if you have a power that can force them to put up their bubbles.

It's a good weapon. But as Arkhne said - you need to fix the damn delay if you're on PC. I use it on the Demo girl. Stagger with Arc - headshot. Turian Sentinel/Geth Engineer also work very well.

Since you're on console, just lead by a slight amount and it's hard to explain through text, but once you figure it out it's great. Love it on the huntress like Nat said, also stupidly powerful on the GI with the RoF bonus. My Quarians enjoy the gun as well.

It's basically a hybrid between a sniper rifle and a shotgun. If you're sick of the stupid buckshot shotgun assumption (as if shottys only fired buckshot) then this shotty is for you. If you cannot fix the firing bug (aka you play on console), then you may want to walk away though...

It's my most used gun in the game, and I'm on console, off-host, so I suspect the firing mechanism balances out normal lag issues. Or something. I dunno. It's glorious, anyway. Melee AIU or Huntress are the two characters I use it most on, but it's good on any character who can stun. It doesn't benefit from smartchoke and has innate piercing, so opens up at least one slot for an omniblade. If there is a 'tip' for dealing with the delay, it's that basically if the reticle is red, the enemy is already dead, but they just don't know it yet. Second only to the Claymore in my shotgun affections.

The Crusader is the killer of all armour. Hitting smaller or fast targets on console is a bitch however. Think of it as a shotgun loaded with slugs. You have long range at the expense of spread which means it doesn't ignore shield gate and there's a much tighter crosshair. It's not bad when you get used to its targeting wierdness but there are better options. I like it on all infiltrators, the Paladin, and Turians.

Remington 870 Magnum firing slug rounds. The firing delay is your character flinching because he knows he's going to feel the shot in his shoulder the next morning.

It is, with the delay-fix, arguably the best shotgun in the game.

Batarian Sentinel. If they're not moving they can't dodge and the firing delay doesn't matter.
Crusader is also boss at applying ammo effects, which I don't think has been mentioned yet.

I tried it on the Batarian soldier, and after staggering enemies with Ballistic blades, I could easily mow them down. I'll try it on the sentinel soon because it sounds even more useful with him.

That's real funny. I just unlocked the Crusader as well (final weapon on my manifest) and came out of match a couple minutes ago where I used it for the first time. And what do you know -- this thread is on the front page.
Obviously, I've only used it once, so I can't give much insight to the weapon. I tried it out on the AIU, and it works real well with snap freeze. Since the Crusader requires dead-accurate aiming and doesn't get the luxury of a scope, being able to freeze a wave of small enemies instantly makes everything a lot easier.
And you already know about the delay bug. It's not a huge deal, but every once in a while, a shot that should have hit, just phases through the target and deals 0 damage.

I use it on Krolord for when I can´t melee and on Batarian Sentinel as I am not keen on his powers and with Crusader I can play him as full weapon platfrom if things go wrong. It´s hard hitting weapon, it can be basically used as sniper rifle if you wish to, it is strong enough for that. But like others said, its firing takes some getting used to.

The common denominator of all the builds posted above is that they have a stun (Tsent, GE, QFE), which helps you balance the fire delay bug. For instance I use it (unmodded) with the salarian infiltrator : energy drain staggers every mook and in one or twho shots they're dead.
It's a super strong boss killer at any range. Another great perk of the gun is that it has enough penetration to double hit a banshee without drill/AP ammo (with both piercing mods). That way you can use incendiary/warp/disruptor/phasics and still double hit the bad guys. Oh and it ignores armor mitigation and never gets reduced damage througs walls cuz innate piercing. And I forgot to say that it's one of the best melee guns because it doesn't need a smart choke so you've got a free spot for the omni-blade and it destroys bosses while your melee takes care of the mooks. And on top of that it's pre-dlc, so no weight malus with the high-velocity barrel or the omni-blade (as long as you only equip one).

Forgive the noob ass question (I haven't really played since 2014) but would this gun be remotely viable for a N7 Paladin? I just got oddly fascinated by the idea to play a class named "Paladin" with a shotgun named "Crusader".
