Its been long enough to look at the game objectively now.
And say whats wrong with it.
Endless fetching aside, poorly animated fights aside. Entire alien races rendered chracterless and given gender issues to deal with aside. Barren uniteresting worlds etc.
Lets put all that in the obvious basket.
In the not so obvious basket.....
Bio have created a game whose sole point is to make up for the fact it has no story to begin with, it has been refocused around loyalty missions and tying those missions to sex for that purpose.
Probably targetting teenage boys with confidence issues.
In ME2 you could at least say lives were on the line. That you needed loyalty to secure victory. That there was a story driving these interactions forward and determining the fate of individual relationships.
In MEA you're replacing thought out main missions intended to progress the story, with closed ended friendship arcs that serve no purpose other than to unlock "non threatening friend who isnt human mode."
Or "lets have alien sex mode."
(At a ratio of 4 aliens to 1 human.)
A lot of people have fallen for it and heres why.
There is a group of people who play Mass Effect to make up for lost human contact.
Having a group of non threatening, non humans to have sex with is actually less scary than looking an actual person in the eye. Even better if they can make friends along the way.
This same group can often be found complaining about pronouns and campaigning for gender neutral toys or simply saying that life is too hard, believing it has an adjustable difficulty level that must be changed to suit then.
They do not want to have to choose between Mordin and the Krogan. They'd rather secure snacks for movie night.
They don't want to put the effort in to taking down the shadow broker.
Theyre too busy listening to SAM tell them the shadow broker is too dangerous to attack head on and they should scan for an access node and let him do it for them.
They don't want a game that requires any more effort than theyre willing to put into it and thats not much.
To those people the game is a flawless gem, because the game is catered to them. Go here, scan this, say that, have sex, make friends.
Thats Mass Effect Andromeda's thing. Never push the player, dont allow the player to feel overwhelmed by difficult decisions, for the love of gaming don't expect them to think for themselves.
Give them a walking tutorial that follows them throughout the game and call it the protagonist.
The main story in this game is non existent, if you removed the Nomad and planet travel, its likely about 10-12 hours long.
And thats where all of the above becomes annoying. I can deal with half arsey animations bad NPC VA and poor dialogue this is Mass Effect after all.
But I do that because I respect the games ability to draw me in and make me want to. This presents nothing of value to play through outside of combat.
But if I'd wanted that and nothing else I'd play Gears.
A familiar quote about people who've been trying to make things better by upgrading it with garbage that, in theory improves it and its kind.
"No glands, replaced by tech. No digestive system, replaced by tech.
No soul, replaced by tech.
Whatever they were, gone forever."
This game is outdated, out played by other games and aimed in the wrong direction.
They'll need help if this is to continue.
Zip, out.

Interesting read.
Agree that central plot is underwhelming. For the most part, the attempt to make the squads "funny" or "relatable" generally fall flat with me.

Bio have created a game whose sole point is to make up for the fact it has no story to begin with, it has been refocused around loyalty missions and tying those missions to sex for that purpose. Quote by writer Mac Walters. Director of this game. As for the other half of your rant, It's funny how you blame the game's non existent story on those who really enjoy the romances when the game didn't even cater to them. The only romances that were really paid attention to in this game were Cora, Peebee, and Jaal's, 2 of which are options for male Ryders. The romance options outside of those 3 were all trash. If anyone was catered to it would be the male players. You just can't put the blame for this game's failure on the people who enjoy the romance and character interactions when the romance and characters were rushed just as much as the story was. If there's people out there who enjoy this game for the romance and sex scenes, then let them be. The only game where Bioware actually paid more attention to romances was in DA:I and that game did perfectly fine in other aspects too. I'm also pretty sure those who enjoy the romance scenes didn't pay $60 bucks for solely that. In fact, from what I've seen, those who adore the romance aspect of the games are the same ones to be very analytical of the story and have great discussions on the characters and plot. If these people come to this game to connect with characters because they struggle with it in reality, let them be. Maybe that's their first step to actually learning how to form connections with real people. People play games for different reasons, and some use it as a coping mechanism which is fine. They are not the reason for this game's mess. For every game that Bioware puts out there's always those few threads that tries to attack people who enjoy romances by trying to shame them since they think that all the game's resources went towards their wants when it clearly doesn't. Y'all act like gamers in general don't get attacked for being "losers" with a lack of human contact who escape to games to feel good about themselves. Just chill dude. Blame Bioware.

The writing in Mass Effect Andromeda is pretty much professionalized fan fiction. I was at the shop about an hour ago with an N7 tee. The cashier says this: Cashier: Did you see what they've done to mass effect in the new one? Me: Dont.... Cashier: My face, is, frozen! Because they spent $40 million making it! Its at the point its a running joke IRL as well, now.

Then you go off defending the right to be a loser who avoids human contact. No, people who do that need help.

All you needed was "The Witcher 3 was better" at the end and you would have received Dutch's seal of approval. A missed opportunity.

I added the screenshot to show you why the story was shit, backing up your quote. Did you read it? Whether are not you agree with me defending those who use video games as a coping mechanism, you still can't blame anyone but Bioware for the why the game was such a flop.

You probably owe an apology to the fan fiction folks. I'm pretty sure most of the fan fiction written by those over the age of 16 was better than the writing in this game.
You have to admit, it had a hell of a framework to be an amazing game. Sadly the story and characters were just uninspired, and it really lacked a Mass Effect soul. Just imagine if ME1 had been made using this setup, it would have been amazing. They just need to find some inspired writers, with an actual story to tell.

You don't have to do the loyalty mission, you can finish it after you beat Archon, if you feel like it. And that's the point.

Funny I feel the opposite of what you read. And I'm looking at it "objectively." You know, you don't have to pop in to every thread where people think the game is shit and tell them you think it smells good - it reeks of insecurity, just like shit. And then the same handful of people waft in "sniff sniff - hey, that shit smells good!" - you know who you are.

I don't go posting in threads that glorify this piece of shit game - I MAKE threads roasting this game, and post in ones that say likewise. If there's a rah-rah lovefest thread about Andromeda, I try and stay out of those - unlike your sort. You always seem to feel the need to pop in. Great post OP - wholeheartedly agree. It's unfortunate they can't patch the plot (although it'd be interesting to try and completely rewrite the dialogue/plot and still match the scenes).
