I keep hearing that over and over from various people that it's literally the best RPG ever. That's what prompted me to get it on steam sale but the main drawback for me is the static player character. I really like being able to make my own characters - it's actually been a very long time since I've played a game where I couldn't do that. Not that I can't or won't do it, of course, but it's a bit of a downer. I know the reason why he's static (books and all) but nonetheless, it's one of the reasons why I'm dragging my feet. Another reason is that I don't really find Gerault attractive, I guess? I mean, if I'm going to be stuck playing a dude, lets make him good looking. (Yes, I realize that's shallow. I don't care. Ain't nothing wrong wanting to play hot characters, male or female.) Maybe my opinion will change once I play it though. For now, he looks like a cross between Gandalf and Aragorn. A grizzly " Strider" Aragorn, not the well kempt King Aragorn. That said, y'all have convinced me to give it a go after I finish my second playthrough of ME:A. I want to romance Jaal before it's ruined for me by stumbling across something really spoilery. That's my reservations exactly, because it is exactly the reason why I could not play the previous best RPG of all times, PST. And PST was closer in its structure to what I loved, I.e. It has a party and companions. W3 is playing a take on a novel with some other person's protagonist, whom I can't even make looking the way I want him to look (really, has to be that exact?) in a world that does not really appeal (another take on medieval Europe), and without party and companions. While my the RPG I desire is set in an exotic world (bright, warm colours) with colourful companions, a lot of fun, rather than darkness and hopelessness of tone, and a protagonist that lends itself to customization. So, JAde Empire successor rather than Torment's is my dream RPG. In other words, I guess, I want a totally awesome vacation from reality, happy escapism, not a game that reproduces the worst possible aspect of it in grim details. I wanna have fun rather than suffer agony for 100 hours LOL! While I do love me some dark fantasy, I will ecstatically play your dream RPG, too. Throw in some romance in that bright warm world of yours and I'm SOLD.

TW3 was the first Witcher game I purchased, as well. I was on the fence about even starting it because I got it in a Steam sale, too. But, it's the best game I've ever played and I liked it so much that I played through the main story twice and all the DLC three times. And I still haven't even picked up all the collectibles and side content. I now compare almost all RPG's to TW3 to see how they stack up. They did almost everything damn near perfectly in my opinion. I keep hearing that over and over from various people that it's literally the best RPG ever. That's what prompted me to get it on steam sale but the main drawback for me is the static player character. I really like being able to make my own characters - it's actually been a very long time since I've played a game where I couldn't do that. I want to romance Jaal before it's ruined for me by stumbling across something really spoilery. The game is good, and I kind of like Geralt. But I would never in my wildest dreams make my own character anywhere near his likeness. So I really understand your stance on that. The lack of companions is a major downer. I'm not entirely sold on the "princess is in another castle" plot. Still I really like the game and will eventually finish it. I just want to go through TW1 and TW2 first. TW1 I finished last summer and now I'm a bit stuck in act 2 TW2. Geralt will have to wait while I give all attention to all the Ryders.

I really have to try Spellforce Platinum, I own it on GOG. Have been meaning to play it, I just got sidetracked by Witcher 3 and it's two expansions.
I have to try SpellForce 2 Anniversary Edition, since it just got updated to work on modern systems, also along with bug fixes / widescreen support.
(I just found out from Steam, SpellForce 2 Anniversary Edition is out. That includes the SpellForce 2: Dragon Storm expansion, really freaking cool.)

I want to romance Jaal before it's ruined for me by stumbling across something really spoilery. I can completely understand the interest/desire to create a custom character. That's not something that really registers for me personally (I was totally happy playing as Standard Shepard and Ryder, for instance). As for Geralt's looks, the best you can do is customize his hair/facial hair and of course his armor, and some of those hair customization options drastically help. I think Geralt looks ridiculous clean shaven with straight long hair, for example, so I gave him a goatee with a shaved head with pony tail. He is also a lady's man in the game, despite the looks. One major romance plot point, if you choose to pursue a romance, is the relationship dynamic between Geralt and Triss/Yennefer (both of whom are pretty good looking in the game). He also has a few other romance options and access to a brothel. Anyways, I do hope you enjoy it! At the very least, the combat, cinematics, facial expressions and decision-making in the game are incredibly well done. The core is great, which can't really be said about the game in which this forum is based.

Focusing on school, so I'm not playing anything. I want to want to play NG+, but I have no drive to devote that many hours to the game again (at least, I'd rather wait until summer break so I feel less pressed for time and maybe there are more natural hair options for female Ryder). If I were to play anything, it would be ME3 again or Pillars of Eternity.

It has some dark moments but I never felt overwhelmed by them. As I mentioned above, my biggest selling point with TW3 is that it's just a fantastic game at its core. The fighting mechanics, facial expressions, cinematics, story telling and environments are so incredibly well done. I've never played anything that's like it. To me, avoiding TW3 because of the setting and lack of character customization is kind of like judging a book by its cover.

I completed all achievement, save game 100% and finish few post-ending quests after I visit all planets as throughout as possible to see all epilogue contents. I guess that is all and no point to play NG+ Besides NieR: Automata, Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Horizon Zero Dawn, is there any interesting RPG? I started Persona 5. It's so stylized and wonderful.

Mmgh, I played one game with just the main character that was helped from time to time by other characters. I like the party, and companions, and get bored without it. It's a core mechanics. I certainly like customizing the main character, at least to the extent of the Jade Empire. To me it's also a part of the core mechanics. I have never played a game which did not start with protagonist creation. What use are the perfect facial animations if they are for the face you don't like and it is not "yours"? For me a big part of the game is its setting, and everyone praises the Witcher for dealing with rape, and shades of gray, and stuff. I just don't want to deal with it in a game, real world is depressing enough. I also am deathly tired of Medieval stuff. I just played DA, and gods, not another bow, horse or set of armor.... On the other hand, I am pretty happy with DA2 graphics and Andromeda graphics and gameplay. I like simple fighting mechanics, so when people praise complex skill trees or lots of choices in builds and other "in depth" stuff, it puts me off. On top of it, I find games over 30-40 hours of length too overwhelming. I like to be able to skip stuff to see what happens next and do different stuff with another protagonist so it is different. So, what's there in the Witcher for me, if I don't like the protagonist, the setting and the core mechanics, and don't place much stock in the uber-realistic artwork? What's there that I am going to like? I am also attracted to men, not women, so hot women are not it either, and the main guy is not really customizable so I don't expect to fall for him either, like with Shepard. So far, I just saw nothing about Witcher that made me go: Wow, that sounds great!

So, what's there in the Witcher for me, if I don't like the protagonist, the setting and the core mechanics, and don't place large stock in the realistic artwork? For you, personally, there may not be much. I can understand that. It comes down to what you prioritize in a game. To me, character customization is not a core game mechanic in any game. It's simply an immersive role-playing feature. If I had to choose between a great game with no character customization and a mediocre (or bad) game with great character customization, I'd choose the former every time without hesitation. I can definitely see where you're coming from with the setting and the character builds. If that stuff is uninteresting to you then it makes sense to avoid that kind of game. My priorities for a game always come down to what I listed above, and in the case of TW3, it passes with flying colors and is the reason I think it's one of the best games ever made.

Witcher 3 expansions and Persona 5 mainly. Don't think I'd go back to any DLC unless they hire a new writing staff though.

Well, I hope you are satisfied that I am not just judging the book by its cover, I have at least browsed the table of contents and read the foreword.

I used to feel the same way about not being able to change Geralts look when I first started TW3. Then I stopped, went back and read the books and played the first two games.
Now I couldn't imagine playing it as anyone but Geralt.

Well, I'm not finished with it yet, and it will be a bit before I do, but between finishing MEA and starting a second playthrough, I'm going to finish Dishonored 2, and then I'm thinking about getting Hitman (no subtitles) Season 1. Watching the Outside Xbox crew play Hitman is hilarious and has really piqued my interest in a game I normally wouldn't care about. It just looks like a boatload of fun, and since I'm continuing graduate school and working full time a game I can jump in to, mess around a bit, and then finish a mission in about 30-45 minutes would be a good break from the games I normally play where playing for just 2 hours at a time seems like way not enough.
Prey is also looking pretty good though.

Now I couldn't imagine playing it as anyone but Geralt. There are plenty of books I love, including sci-fi/fantasy, and lots of characters and historic figures that I am crazy about, but I would not want to play as one of them. In their world - yes, meet them - yes, hells, even romance them. Play as them - nope, not really. :)

Still on my first playthrough with Andromeda but Persona 5 is in the wings waiting to be lovingly unpacked.

Swtor, DA:I, some Diablo 3, and ME:A Multiplayer. I'm waiting for all those patches they said they'd be working on over the next 2 months, so i can make a true playthrough or whatever.

Been at Persona 5's throat the past week or so... about to quit and return to Andromeda with some the terrible design choices in that game. So disappointed after loving the last two entries.
I am probably one of the few... but of the known franchises, I ended hating Berseria, Breath of the Wild, and P5 and absolutely loving Andromeda. I mean, for me the game of the generation and entries into the all time discussion are Inquisition and Andromeda....... two games that many hate for whatever reason.

Back to Witcher 3 for me. I may re-load and play ME2 because this game made me miss Shepard so much.
