This is what Andromeda needed, according to the gospel of myself:
1. A detailed/better/more expansive Character Creator. Better hair. Better skin. No gender locked things. Lots of variation. Different colored eyes (left eye brown, right eye blue, for example). Better makeup options. Lol...what was with that "eyeliner?" Or the options for eye shadow? Bizarre.
Think DA:I's CC, but better. As for genetic sync - our parents should've just been adoptive. It would've given the Ryder character more depth and background - like...what happened to Ryder's real parents? If adoptive, our parents could've been any alien race, not just human. That would've been a compelling setup. I call dibs on Turian parents.
2. Less crafting. A personal preference. Just buy the armour you want and mix/match. Hunting for craft items is busy work assigned to us to fill gameplay hours. It's a scam. Let us earn credits during in depth cinematic quests and side quests. Then we can spend those credits however we please. There can still be some crafting I guess, but really who cares? Superfluous.
3. More new alien races. Give us at least 6 to 8 new aliens. All we got were the Angarans. And we got two bad guys - Kett and Remnant. Give us more than that - I don't care how they justify the aliens being together in one cluster. Fuck. A good writer will figure it out. Anything is possible in FANTASY.
4. Diverse face models for aliens. I think the Asari in this game are a good example of why copying and pasting is not only distracting, but downright sad. DA2 made this same mistake with dungeons, houses, and caves. So very sad; so very lazy. (At least DA2 had an excuse - they were rushed.) The Asari all had the same face! It was so distracting....and confusing....and stupid....and sad.
5. SAM is..... pointless. He tells you when you have email (even when you don't). He tells you how to solve puzzles. He tells you to use that asinine scanner even though there's already a ping and/or a vibration. He tells you how to cheat at poker. He tells you how to wipe. It's ridiculous. A male AI is not a bad idea. He could've been the next EDI. He could've been a companion. Maybe even a love interest - a nonphysical one at that (think of the film "Her"). Hell, he could've been the villain. I think any idea here is better than the role SAM ended up filling. I would like to mute SAM.
6. The scanner. There was far too much dependence on that thing. I believe the scanner revealed the overall emptiness of the vast worlds throughout Andromeda. Also the scanner was a bit difficult, visually. A scanner isn't a bad idea, but it should've been used sparingly and its UI could've been better designed in terms of color, size, transparency, and highlight. It could have functioned above and beyond locating the same random crap. Like.... use the scanner as a lie detector during conversations. You know? Boost your tech skill points and eventually use the "scan" dialogue option to determine if an NPC or companion is lying to you. So, instead of being able to persuade others to tell you the truth - you call them on their bullshit. You solve mysteries more efficiently. You get yourself in trouble more easily, or out of trouble more easily. It can go either way. It could've been a fun idea. Wish they could've thought outside the box on that one.
7. There's nothing really wrong with the nomad, aside from those random bugs. I just think futuristic motor bikes/dirt bikes with jet fuel would've been way fucking cooler. Also, perhaps a little less clumsy. And..... more original than just rehashing the mako.
8. If a companion has something to tell us on the Tempest, why can't they just tell us on the Nexus? And vice versa. That was obnoxious. Peebee is standing right there on the Nexus, but she has something to tell me back on the ship. So irritating. I understand if they want to meet me somewhere specific to talk, but the constant back and forth between nexus and Tempest.......
9. We needed a much better organized menu system. Nuff said.
10. Make viability really count. Like vastly game changing, to the point of causing me to worry - to actually stress - that a planet is not viable.

Agree totally with #3. Seeing as we're going to a new galaxy we should have had as many new species as there was in ME1!
Although consider how crap the angorans and kett are I don't really trust this team with coming up with new and interesting species!

I agree with most of this.
I'm just a lil worried about the overuse of the word "nuanced" around here lately.
I think we might be causing it to lose all meaning.

I would start by making several changes to the way crafting and inventory works:
1. Combine the research and development aspects of crafting, so that weapons, mods and armor could be simply upgraded.
2. Bring back ME3-style workbench, and have augmentations be part of the modding process.
3. Remove inventory management altogether, have merchants sell weapon upgrades as an alternative to crafting them.
4. Replace generic junk with credits. Doesn't make any less sense than finding Milky Way loot in Andromeda.

I can never disagree with a better character creator. Heterochromia is interesting. I've never seen a CC with it (help me out if you have), so it would've been cool to see it here. I feel lucky that I got really close to what I envisioned, but if I ever want to make a different character, it will no doubt be…problematic.
Can't agree about crafting though, only because I really enjoy the changes in mechanics I can make to certain weapons (and armor) that you wouldn't find in loot unless they were all perks granted by RNGesus. What I think could use improvement however are augmentations. Too many of them are unsatisfying to use in practice, like that beam emitter. If they actually made augments more worthwhile, that would give crafting a real shot in the arm. I think what could offset the dislike of crafting for folks is making more and better gear available at certain levels from vendors. Right now there seems to be way too few, and in one case no higher levels at all (looking at you, HALBERD!)
I disagree with having more alien races active in the cluster, mainly because it undermines the story behind the angara and their conflict with the Kett and how this is the source of their initial distrust of the first alien life they've encountered since then. Aside from there being no interstellar super highway, their civilization is barely recovering from a major collapse, so that might make it seem even more awkward. Besides, what we learn from the Journey to Meridian, it makes even more sense that the entire cluster is basically all angaran.
I agree with more varied faces for aliens, but I'm fine with a wider variation of colors and markings to offset the copy/paste effect, like the turians. Overall I find that a number of angara look recognizable as individuals that I can overlook how many look alike. It's really the asari that are a major problem, because they're all from the same litter as Lexi.
I like SAM, but it really should be prioritized to more important information and leave the rest to the HUD to convey simple information, like environmental hazards, and leave us with our own literacy to read the information that shows up on a scanner.
I think the scanner could use a fair bit of refinement visually though. I have some thoughts about that, but it would take a few drafts before I could say I have an idea that could work.
I would LOVE a jet bike in Mass Effect. You have no idea how much I would go for this. Our team would have to have one each though, but that's fine. I'm just trying to envision a krogan riding one though. It's both awesome and hilarious.
I agree that companions should be able to tell you anything anywhere, unless of course there's something they want to show you that's specifically in a certain location, like Peebee's project, or that thing Suvi shows you in her final romance dialogue.
I agree with this. I can find my way around it now, but it's not as intuitive as I'd like.
I'd like planet viability to result in visual changes to the outposts, like more NPC's, perhaps expanded facilities and more vehicles, maybe even major additions like greenhouses.

Agree with most of what you said but as far as new alien races go we were confined to just one cluster. It wouldn't make sense to get more than what we got. It would be like a game being set in just the Artemis Tau cluster. The trick is expanding the game outside of Helius in the sequel but in a realistic way since we don't have a handy dandy mass relay network in the Andromeda galaxy. Lazy Reapers.

Goes to show they should've scrapped the original story and re-drafted something that introduces a slew of new races to the overall gameplay. My opinion, of course.

If I could change Andromeda? - the asari would not be in the game. The quarians would be in the game. A quarian will be a squadmate - Alec would not be dead. - My Ryder would be wearing Cerberus armor - there would be a hologram of Earth in Ryder's cabin - there would be a reaper model in Ryder's cabin - Ryder would be able to wear clothing like what Suvi wears - Addison would be a fueler. Every time I stop by the Nexus, she would fill the tempest up with go-go juice - Scott/Sara would wake up earlier in the game. They would be doing odd jobs on the Hyperion - Cora learns she is the daughter of TIM and learns who he is. At the end of the game, she leaves the tempest to form Cerberus. She is seen wearing a black dress/skirt with a cigarette in one hand and a drink in the other. Ryder is standing by her side. She is now know as TID, the Illusive Daughter. - the game will have a lot of renegade interrupts - I would make Kandros Amabassador - Primus would be the main villian instead of Archie the Archon - one of the ketts rebels against its kind and joins the squad.

If I could change one thing about MEA, I would make sure my main character doesn't look like a ventriloquist dummy. Agree with many of the OP's points and others in the thread. I think it mainly comes down to attention to details and polish. There isn't anything devastatingly wrong with MEA but there also isn't anything great about it that makes me want to overlook its flaws. If they can fix some of the bad technical and dubious design decisions MEA2 could be really good.

I would outsource all the technical development work to a competent and experienced studio. That's exactly how you end up with buggy games in the first place. Just take a look at most AAA games out there that admit to doing it and you'll see what I mean. Outsourcing ones own game really isn't the way to go imo, especially when some of my favorite franchises fall victim to outsourcing, just look at halo as one example, the Doom reboot being another (doom was so bad ID got rid of the guys they outsourced to and just redid everything themselves).

#2 I can't get behind this one. I love the process of searching for material to make armor, because it actually feel like I've put in work to get that. Money seems to be very easy to make in these games. So more craftable armor and weapons. Things I would've added: 1. I wish Sara/Scott would have woke up much earlier and had comments about your LI. 2. A lot more friendship scenes. 3. Liam having more dialogue options. 4.Insanity being a little bit harder. The enemies are all weak sauce 5. Daddy Ryder dying later in the game. He could've got injured at the beginning of the game, so he wouldn't be able to do the Pathfinder duty. 6. A gay squadmate for m/m. 7. A Cassandra Pentaghast character.

ME:A is already a victim of what you are describing. If you outsourced it to a lesser studio, yeah they will screw up. In a way, we can say that EA "out-sourced" development to Bioware Montreal and the amount of new bugs I am discovering on a daily basis is simply astonishing (just got hit by a scan anomaly and galaxy map hangs and cant do anything except alt-f4).

Story stuff, including character. I would want a rewrite, for them to get more into some things they barely scratch the surface of. I would want a better villain with more interesting motivations than pure power or ability to destroy. I would want sloane to have been more compelling and complex. I would want far less clues about what the kett are doing so that it has more impact. Too much foreshadowing. Or make it more complex than it was (perhaps angara were being brainwashed). Better characters too. Most of the squad needs some tweaking. Right now PB is on level with a high school kid, not a very mature one at that. Cora actually was kind of interesting but needed a bit more of a solid arc. Jaal is fine. Vetra needed some more complexity. Liam needed to be less of a mess. Take his drama down two notches as suggested by Ryder to a roekkar. Make him more mature or come off more mature. Maybe still gets into trouble but not in a screwy way. He needed more calm to him. Less high strung ready to lose it. For a crisis response guy, he was the crisis too often. Drack was well written.
More backstory for Ryders. I think it should have been clearer that they served in the military for a few years and they should have been a few years older. Pathfinder is a big deal to take on. I don't think it would have detracted from their heroism if they had a backstory where they had some solid experience like a Liam or Cora had. Cora had the most it seems but adding a bit to the ryders would have been nice. They made them too green.

Is there really such thing as outsourcing to the correct people? Doom went with guys that had experience with H2-H3, pretty big names, guys with a decade of experience. The issue with outsourcing period is you risk issues because the people you outsource to do not have any experience with the franchise itself + the devs need to go back through and make sure the people they outsourced to did their job, it's why it's better the devs just do it themselves. I'm also aware Andromeda has been outsourced as well, and in this games case from what I hear they're actually responsible for the quick patch a week after launch and have various patches coming the next two months. As for Andromedas actual development itself I personally am unaware if they've outsourced and personally I never cared to look because I expected issues as is since Bioware Montreal is the newest studio handling the game. I'm sure you're aware their only experience was the omega dlc and the ME3 multiplayer, would I call it outsourcing though? Ehh not really because it's a studio that is actually apart of the main dev group themselves but an expanded one to allow bioware to work on multiple games at once. Because it's internal it technically isn't outsourced.

Just because they carry the Bioware name doesnt mean they are not an inferior studio. So I argue that ME:A is " technically" being out sourced to a 2nd grade studio. Also, I said "I would out sourced all technical development" to a competent and experienced studio. Just technical development task. The creators only need to think about how they want to present the game and do not have to worry about the development team not being able to deliver what they want.

I am not sure I understand this logic (and I have seen it alot in these threads). This is assuming all clusters are equal. But we know Helius is a special cluster because it has so many potential life bearing worlds. If the MW folks identified 7 habitable worlds in this cluster, then you have 7 planets that can support life as we know it in the same cluster. Right there is the possibility of 7 distinct species that evolved on each planet (if we ascribe to the notion that only a single advanced species could dominate each planet by excluding mutalisms, and stuff like that...which would be super cool to have in a game about alien life, but...whatever). When you add in... Meridian and its life pumping juices (ie, space magic), etc, then virtually any of the rocks in the cluster could have supported life. That gives waaaaay more chance of planets in this cluster to have life on them (of all kinds, not just carbon-based, etc).
The question then becomes one of the probability that given a set number of life-bearing planets, how many would be at the stage of evolution to have a technology advanced species. But then... meridian does make this cluster unique, in the "creation myth come true"...so if the entire cluster was engineered, then perhaps that would be why we only have a single species. Gah! I've talked myself into one species making sense... via Bioware space magic!! This fracking game... Sorry for convoluted rant. I just wanted to comment to OP that I like the idea presented in his point #6!! Using the planet scanner in interesting ways (as well as Sam) would have made a huge improvement to the game.

I think the one thing that drove me the most insane was the CC, hands down. I could've dealt with everything else if I was given the chance to truly create my *own* character.
I really wanted to create a guy, but the male presets were unattractive. Their skin and their double chins and lazy eyes.... come on. If they're going to make a preset with tons of natural flaws, then allow us to tweak those flaws out if we had a different design in mind.
I heard people complain about the same issue with the women. Preset 9 was the only female I found attractive aside from the first preset - the Asian girl.
And that's only because 9 had the eyebrows I wanted - she wasn't actually anything that remarkable next to the others. So dumb.
