hmmm i had a few ideas on the subject.
I'd like a Remnant "Caretaker" AI: Basically a machine with a Turian/human like form with a screen for a face (Think of Soundwave from Transformers Prime). Backstory would be that it was in charge of uplifting the races the Jordaan create/recreated (possibly) with knowledge of them and technological achievements.
The companions main purpose would be an engineer combat style.

A salarian (an infiltrator esque type squaddie with a shotgun; think like a geth hunter from ME3) and/or asari commando. A batarian; this was some huge missed potential in the OT imho, would love to see one now. But could enough of them been packed onto the Quarian ark? A Quarian. Would love another female, but I guess in fairness, it's time for a male.

I was thinking more or a Pathfinder Squad-mate Exchange program. Let the squad-mates experience how it would be to work under a different Pathfinder: Cora exchanged to the Salarian team(yeah she'd want to go to the Asari) Liam exchanged to the Turian team(let him learn some disapline) Vetra exchanged to the Asari team(reasons) PeeBee exchanged to the Quarian team(if the Quarian Arks shows up, just to see her in a full containment suit)
We can still meet-up, with our old team-mates at Meridian, or the Nexus, to talk or continue/cancel our LI.

New squadmates will help if they also come with new writers. One of the big problems with this game is it just feels like a spring break roadtrip with a pack of annoying dipsh*ts. I swear, all that's missing is a Wesley Crusher character to drive me completely around the bend. And I'm not saying take all humor out; just take out the stupid. I know Bioware can write better characters than this. They've been doing it for almost 20 damn years.
No more human characters. I can't take any more chili bowl or Kim Jong Un haircuts since that appears to be the Andromeda galaxy rage.
Female drell character would be cool; wouldn't mind a ninja type assassin. Quarian male; somebody earlier in the thread mentioned Kal Reegar; loved that guy; wouldn't mind a quarian marine. Batarian male would be another interesting character. They really took it in the neck from the reapers; wouldn't mind a really quiet angry guy mourning the death of so many of his species.

I want a squadmate that will surprise us - something completely unexpected, whether in species or build/class or story. I don't care what the specifics are, I just want to feel like they've done something new with them.

Hey guys, Elections day are coming where I live, and I keep hearing the same sentence "The original is always better than the copy". Really, what applies to politics also applies in videogames. More to the point, squadmates. While I find them good if taken independently, I guess that what, consciously or not, disapoints most people is that they feel like tweaked copies of the original crew: 2 humans as starting companions : the soldier-like girl and the nice sploppy guy One asari archeologist (again), but with a different character One turian gunner, good at heart but rebellious toward autority (again), but it's a girl One krogan (again) because we need one liners like "I guess shooting at it won't help?" or "until we kill them all... right Ryder?" One nice character codexing you the history of his people who are good guys but have taken a beating by the Geths, oups sorry, Keths... excepted this time it is a new specie Cora/Ashley: A human female soldier with biotic powers who was picked to train and operate in Asari space with an all-Asari unit, vs. a human female "vanilla" marine with serious anti-alien issues. But hey, they both have boobs so obviously they're practically the same character. Liam/Kaidan: A scruffy-looking ex-cop who found police work too rigid and structured and left the force in a hurry and then worked for years in an all-civillian crisis response team, vs. a very squared-away and by-the-book career navy officer. Again, striking similarities. Peebee/Liara: An Asari explorer, rogue and quasi-scientific explorer with a "lets poke it with a stick and see what happens"-attitude to alien technology, vs. a scholar and scientist with several publications behind her and very limited real-life experience. But hey, they're both blue, so... Vetra/Garrus: A very unusual Turian with no prior military service and none of the usual ingrained "unit before self" attitude that is so prevalent in Turian culture, and a background in smuggling and "procurement", vs. a former military, former Citadel security archetypical Turian with a fetish for really big weapons. But since they're both Turian and both have a rifle they must be practically the same, right? Jaal/Tali: A hardened resistance fighter and combat veteran sent as an envoy/chaperone from a newly encountered species who finds themselves in a battle for their existence with an aggressive invader, vs. a teenage girl and accomplished mechanic from a species that literally created their own worst enemy and got their asses kicked by them, now out in the galaxy for the first time in her life and getting caught up in events beyond her control. Drack/Wrex: A grizzled veteran and unstoppable juggernaut of destruction... yeah OK, fair point.

1. Ixy Zorbant A demure (or emo) Salarian woman who rejects the elitist intellectualism of most Salarians. She speaks slowly, is uninterested in science or technology and is forthcoming where most Salarians are reserved or prudish. She is on a journey of enlightenment and self actualization. Possibly looking for ways to extend her live well past the 40 something years a Salarian should get (which is all the strange given her young age). She is not an experienced combatant but was formerly a trooper with some exiles and displays a natural talent for battle.
2. Jeff An aspiring young Krogan artist and musician exiled by his father and told not to come back home without 5 war stories. He's a sensitive soul with powerful biotics. Powerful enough to somehow end up on the crew.
3. Xara Th'ralus (Xeetee) Asari Sherlock Holmes, the greatest detective in Andromeda (formerly the Milky Way). She can't be separated from her long coat, her brow is often furrowed in faux concentration, she is condescending, self aggrandizing, blunt and her wit is both dry and derisive. She is hunted by an enigmatic nemesis who followed her from the milky way. She is - by her own description - a sociopath who hardly displays emotions besides neurotic disappointment (when struggling to crack a case) or slight amusement (when things are going her way). Still, she is capable of love. It just won't really feel like it
4. Walter Colwell An old human man: veteran of the First Contact War and former President of the United North American States who was so unpopular he came all the way to Andromeda for a fresh start. A natural politician: charismatic, persuasive and possessing a mind like a steel trap even in his old age. His motives are unclear but he seems driven by a need for domination and you wonder if you can ever trust him 100%. He fights with the aid of a bulky cyborg-body-suit type thing that moves his old bones around as if he's still an officer on the frontlines of Shanxi. Outside of the suit he is a healthy but physically limited man of 70
5. Dhonne A Batarian man who deeply believes in the Batarian Hegemony and who's primary delusion is that he can bring the Hegemony to Andromeda. A highly, highly skilled combatant who probably served as one of the Hegemony's top assassin's or body guards but refuses to acknowledge where his skills come from. In the Milky Way, he'd be your enemy. In Andromeda, his fighting skills and influence over the Batarian arrivals make him a valuable member of any team. You just hope you can help him see the light some day
6. Tali
7. Calo Terion The nastiest, most sinister, rigid and cruel Turian we have ever seen in a Mass Effect game. A career military official who joins the crew out of absolute necessity with all the good intentions in the world but a heart of frigid, immobile steel and a sadistic taste for bloodshed and the torture of captives.
just some random ideas
edit: added names cuz I was having too much fun

We all know we're getting two humans on the squad (would love to see Bioware change this to just one human, personally). I'd like it if, instead of them being the starter squad, they'd be acquired as you played through the game. Their personalities and backstories would be unique, something we've never seen from Bioware before, and they'd stand out in the line-up against the alien squaddies instead of fading into the background as almost all of our previous human squadmates do.
I want to get away from "check-list" squadmates. I want interesting and new and bold.

I'll start with what I don't want: Vorcha and Volas...and Elcor. Those three I can handle for only short periods of time, and by that I mean they way they talk.
Elcor would be fine, if they didn't talk so damned slow, it would also be interesting to see one who didn't tell you, 'With great sorrow...' before they spoke, just deadpan every line and have the crew react to it.
Oh, and Hannar. No thank you.
Of course they could be on the ship, just not as squad members (or else I'll never take them with me, I don't care how 'awesome' they are).
Now for who I'd want along as squadmates: A human, male or female, I don't really care. Just write them better, they are almost always the weakest of the squad in terms of character (to me that is). A female Drell who isn't an assassin. I don't want a female version of Thane. A male Quarian, preferably a soldier that doesn't use shotguns (they have crap defense and a tear in the suit could mean death, why would you get close enough to get hit?!) A female Krogan. They're just as tough and capable as the males, so why not. Doesn't have to be war minded like the other Krogans we've had, but keep the Krogan sense of humor, I love it to pieces. A New Alien species member. A female Angaran. An Asari, even if they aren't a huntress, then at least a commando. A female Salarian. A Turian, male or female, it doesn't really matter, though I do like seeing female Turians.
I'm sorry to say but having a Batarian doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Whether or not Shepard does it, their home system, along with almost all of their population, was wiped out by the Mass Relay exploding. I believe they make a point of saying this in ME3 that the Batarians are basically extinct, that there is no way they can recover from what happened. And unless I'm mistaken, the Arcs left shortly before the Reapers actually invaded in ME3, which means that the Batarians are basically dead. Since the Andromeda Initiative is suppose to find homes for the MW races to start over, it doesn't make sense to bring along a race that, even if every single one of them was rounded up, couldn't muster enough people to restart their population.
What I would love to see happen for the next ME is the choice of what race our character is, and depending on that choice, the squad member of that same race, would not join us. There is no reason why, even in MEA, we should be stuck playing a human, when there is so much more potential to be had if it is opened up to playing as a different race. Would that make it more difficult and create more work? Absolutely. Would it make it better? If done well and done with love and care for the characters, races, and lore, hell yes.
