This has been bugging me since I started, as I'll be in the middle of a conversation and a companion will say something that's barely audible despite being stood directly behind me.
Is there an options setting that I've overlooked to have speech volume dependent on proximity to my character rather than the direction of the camera?

Not that I know of. I have the same problem. Would be good if they'd adjust the audio mix for companions during dialogue in a future patch.

I've tried a bunch of audio options but nothing seems to fix it. I have subtitles turned on so I don't miss the dialogue entirely, but the low speech volume is definitely annoying.

I'm glad you posted this - I thought I had not chosen the correct audio settings. Have spent ages messing around with audio settings of my soundcard as well as the minimal choices in game but nothing seems to fix this.
It is quite a crucial thing for me because straining to hear an npc talking less than a couple of metres away from you simply because you turned Ryder and the camera to face away from them is ridiculous.
I hope they can fix this sound issue so the game feels more enjoyable, as listening to ambient npc banter is part of the fun when roaming around worlds and hubs.

Same to me. My first thought was because of my "cheap" onboard audio chip. It's good to know that happens to others, too. Without subtitles no chance to follow such conversations.

Im using headphones and it still happens panning the camera helps but it only goes back so far and that appears to be the problem.
Camera angle = Volume level.

Happened last night. Started Drack's loyalty quest, talked to the dude behind the counter in New Tachunka (sp?), and Drack made a few quips while the guy was talking. Could barely hear it, but thought it was my soundcard and/or speakers. Glad I'm not the only one (well, not GLAD, but you know what I mean).
