Here's an article I read a while ago. I can't verify their data, but given that they're a videogame data aggregate by trade, I'd say they're financially obligated to provide good data. They also talk a good talk. quanticfoundry.com/2017/01/19/female-gamers-by-genre/This is the breakdown among genre according to them: Intuitively, this strikes me as correct. In fact, it specifically notes that Inquisition has an unusually high female player base (48% as opposed to 26%). For a shooter like Mass Effect, though, it's likely a lot lower, but given that it's BioWare, it's probably much higher than average. Tactical Shooter at 4%? I don't know about other such games, but that's a liberal estimate for R6: Siege, I've put hundreds of hours into that game and can't remember ever hearing a single female voice on the mic. Curious about what's the percentage when it comes to more niche games like shmups and other such old time genres. It wouldn't surprise me if it's lower than the percentage for sports games. That's a nice statistic. A few year ago it would have been far worse. Good thing, it's changing. And another good thing, there are more and more games which are interesting to play for boys and girls. And I guess because of it the percentage of females will grow. It's like it was a million years ago, when females finally started to conquer the driver seat of a car or a bike. As for the pecentage in my family... we are four women and two men (and I considerl the girlfriend of my son as family because she is). One of us plays games like sims sometimes. Four of us play all kinds of RPGs and Action RPGs , four MMOs, three play shooters - fps and tactical (and one of them just fsp shooters. This person also hates "talking in a game or cut scenes" and skip it all the time). Who wants to make a statistic? About the argument that 4% amount of females playing tactic shooters seem a bit too high. Might be, because of genre or maybe because this seems to be one of the last "bastions of true males". I remember my son and his girlfriend (both love and play shooters) often talk about that and how annoyed both were about "cool guys" bitching badly around because girls in a shooter... hmm, coincidence? I remember my first game called Drakan which had a female PC. And I also remember that she was different than Lara (the "old" Lara) - and I don't talk about the game play. Since then I tried to find good games that also let me choose to play as female or even has a female protagonist. And there weren't much good games that had believable good female chars (and don't start a war again, I guess everyone has a different definition of believable and good. A game that has a half naked "badass girl" and that is because she has to be half naked because of "photosynthesis" is something I won't call either good or believable - just laughable). Besides BW and Bethesda just a few. Who of you remember NOLF? Vampire:The Masquerade - Bloodline. Venetica. And who of you remenber all that ridiculous stories about the development of "Remember me?" But all in all the girls are on an good way in gaming, both as players and prodagonists. And if that is because of "SJW" or "feminism" or whatever you might call it - fine! I don't care. As long as I can play a believable char that isn't just a barbie doll or damsel in distress I don't care why. And as long I get my fair share of good stories that are also good from a "female point of view" - all the better! BTW: Never heard something so funny than this "heels on riding boots because of preventing the food from slipping through the stirrup" story. There is a huge difference between "heels" and "high heels". My advice: just try it out...

She's the Lady of Space and Time. She doesn't rely on horses in the books or in the game. The person who has a horse gimmick is Geralt - who names his horses Roach. Your spin-doctor treatment is weak. Ciri has a horse named Kelpie in the novels she uses to get around. Even though she technically doesn't need one. Ciri is mimicking Geralt in many ways, wanting to be a witcher herself. None of this is of any relevance though. The boot discussion is stupid. Just enjoy the game, people. Wanting to look at pretty people in pretty clothes is not a crime. We all do.

If i get caught in a ME:A thread and i say "Just enjoy the game people" i will get flamed into Oblivion. I think Ciri's outfit looks ridiculous, and while i think its fine when she is on the run, the insistence on having her wear throughout the entire game is stupid.

I think Ciri's outfit looks ridiculous, and while i think its fine when she is on the run, the insistence on having her wear throughout the entire game is stupid. I made this statement in the context of people who all enjoyed the game, suddenly getting worked up over something as silly as Ciri's boots. I haven't read a single person disliking MEA based on an NPC outfit. Were Miranda's high heels stupid in combat or Jack half naked in space? Yup. Did this have an influence on the quality of the game? Nope. What people don't like about MEA has nothing to do with nitpicking an outfit. Nor did I mean to tell people who don't like W3 based on the setting or characters to just ignore that. I will say that it annoys me on a personal level that these days people have a problem with the most minor stuff in games. Which is exactly why developers don't know what to put in their games anymore. Everything is sexist or otherwise offensive. I'm not referring to your comment. I mean in general.

:smh: So hard to believe in this day of age there are people out there getting hung up on a digital characters choice of boots. A character, in a video game, a video about mutant humans using magical spells and enchanted swords to kill monsters and ghosts. The unrealistic part of all that to them is a pair of boots with heels or a woman wearing stockings. I just can't believe people are actually serious when they say these things.

Is your game socially friendly list. Does your game show Transgender people? -check. Does your game show a variety of different races? - check. Does your game show equality between all men and women regardless of how someone defines themselves? - check. Does your game allow the idea of a higher power as to not offend religious beliefs? - check. Does your game show the female body in a normal form and not the ideal standard? - check. Is your game light hearted enough as to avoid things like rape , abuse , torture and other forms of excessive treatments? - check. If you answered no to any of these prepare to deal with people claiming your not setting a good standard and trying to change your game. Have a good day.😊 Poor game developers the list tends to grow and grow and this isn't just MEA. Other games get hounded for these things alot. I'll never grow tired of Bayonetta shows the female form wrong and shouldn't be allowed. Heck even the South Park game was heavily censored for us here in Australia because these types of images are not ok in the modern world.... 😂 Censorship of any form of art should be shunned!.😆 Edit : i actually forgot one myself....oops see i would of been in trouble for not mentioning is your game friendly regardless of sexual preference.😆

And Bayonetta was designed by a woman...
That game was so intentionally offensive in so many ways, so over the top ridiculous, that I found it perfectly fine (I played it).

Hi all! Coming in super late to this convo, so apologies if this is all rehashed.... So I started playing TW3 again, at first just to compare to MEA and try to figure out if it was just nostalgia that made me think TW3 was a superior game. But honestly, I haven't even had time to think about it, because I have just been enjoying the shit out of it. Geralt's dry humor, the beautiful weather and terrain dynamics in the game, horseracing and fist fighting, brewing dedoctions and blade oils, uncovering secret treasures, crafting badass armor and weapons, talking to common folk and lords-n-ladies, and destroying shopkeepers at Gwent. Seriously...I feel like the game has so much fun stuff to do. It really is an amazing game, imo. It's funny, because I have heard so many people bash TW3 as too grizzly and dark. I can see that a little, I guess. But personally, I find it hilarious, beautiful, and fun as hell. Geralt's little "uh-huh" that he does always makes me laugh. I have to say, he is probably my favorite character to play in any game (and I am a girl). But I am sure all of that that has been discussed ad nauseaum in this thread. Just wanted to chime in about the clothing. SO I was playing through the Keira storlyline and my boyfriend peeked at my computer and chuckled at her outfit. He said there was no way a woman living in a hut in the woods would let her chest be so exposed. I countered that she is a sorceress, and bugs don't bother her. He rolled his eyes, and told me to enjoy the magical boobies. Then we got into this huge discussion about medieval clothing, and he brought up a cool point about how important clothing was to establish rank in medieval times. In Tudor England, for example, there were several laws passed in parliament about clothing (and who could wear what colors, fabrics, etc). The nobility left clothing in their wills because it was so important to them, and it was a punishable offense to mock the king's clothes (this was one of the charges levelled against Anne Boleyn, and was considered very serious). And the nobility wore some ridiculous crap...even to do things like hunt and ride horses. See Queen Elizabeth, for example, who was a very established horsewoman. I guess my rambling point is that Ciri's clothing, as well as the sorceresses in the game, may not look very functional...but they are prolly waaaaaay more functional than what nobility actually wore to ride and hunt in medieval times. OK...off to enjoy more magical boobies!!!

Censorship of any form of art should be shunned! So let's make games that shows all female and male in an idealized standard. Let's make games where you can undress males and females and don't end up with an castrated ken body. Let's make games where females are beautiful, have curves and boobs and males look like young and attractive underwear models and have a huge and sexy penis - and show them ingame. Let's make games where you can choose if you want to dress your female in heavy armor and your male in nothing but a tiny chain mail string tanga. Let's make games where you see males running around naked because it's natural. Let's make games that have romances included shows cinematics where the focus is on the mans face in all it's orgastic excitement. When it come to torture, abuse and rape - fine if it has to be in it to make a game more dark, gritty and mature. But then let's abuse, torture and rape everyone, no matter the gender. It actually isn't even FANTANSY, it has happened, it happens and it will happen that men get raped by other mens to humiliate them in the worst kind. So include it in a not so light hearded game, too, that want's to be called dark and grim and mature. We can kill monsters and ghosts and aliens, we can wear stockings and high heel, it's all about fantasies - so why not the whole package? Yes, no censorship anymore. If you can say "fine by me" to all of it then you are a truly openminded soul. But if there ever will be a game that has all of it and devs that have the balls to do it... wow, I bet there will be a huge shitstorm of all exaclty the same people who cry now about these "stupid standards that destroys gaming" and "stupid people complain about everything". Have a good day

Have a good day Better than having games get cut or banned for *too graphic in any form*. Or shunned because its content is not ok. Creators of games shouldn't have to abide by what's correct when telling their own story. As i said this isn't about one game but games in general. It happens to movies and tv shows as well so it's nothing really new. But it's something we should definitely try to convince others to ease up on. From equality to things like showing torture or maybe just a good rape scene. Appreciate the story they are trying to tell. Even now i will cop it for talking about it. Just remember that people destroyed them for Tomb Raider debacle. Even though there was no real rape. It was just trying to stay true to their story they were telling. www.google.com.au/amp/s/www.themarysue.com/lara-croft-misogyny/amp/We need to change how people see these things. That maybe one day we can have truly remarkable stories told of all sides without interferences. Anyway waaasy off topic now back to what ever this crazy ass thread has become.

Perhaps you don't appreciate the context? If a fantasy world is built well, its magic fits in perfectly naturally, and if it's developed in detail, you can even point out the occasional place where something doesn't fit. A story is realistic or not against its own world, not against ours. However, high heels on a person wandering the wilderness is stupid in both worlds, the fictional and the real one, because it's implicitly assumed that the fictional world is like the real one in everything where it isn't explicitly different. So naturally, the "realism standards" of the fictional world apply to magic because magic is where the fictional world explicitly differs from the real world, but our world's realism standards apply to footwear. That's why people don't complain about TW3's magic as unrealistic, and why they do complain about aspects of Ciri's outfit. I'm actually rather shocked that I have to explain this, but then I guess most people aren't much involved in appreciating worldbuilding, or doing it. Not that I minded Ciri's boots all that much. They were a workable compromise, and I probably wouldn't even be talking about this if someone hadn't brought it up. What I do object to, is the underlying assumption that a woman absolutely has to have heels on her footwear. That's just stupid. Worldbuilding again: the fictional world doesn't have to adopt the real world's standards in clothing. There's absolutely zero reason for those heels except convention, and convention is not enough justification to avoid realism - well ok, for some people it apparently is, but then I'm something of a purist when it comes to worldbuilding. Edit: Yes, I made the same point about Miranda and Jack in ME2. Only there it was *way* more blatant to the point where it affected appreciation of the world. TW3 does things more subtly, and that I respect.

Uhm, isn't anything open game, pardon the pun, when it comes to discussion around a game? If i get caught in a ME:A thread and i say "Just enjoy the game people" i will get flamed into Oblivion. Nope. I disagree. ME2 is where they first introduced the asinine breather masks, which looked stupid then and look stupid now. Shepard wore full armor, but they didn't bother to provide actual armor and helmets for the rest of the squad (though some of them had base outfits that were armor). Ryder (and other squaddies) wear full armor in hazardous environments (while SAM constantly chirps environmental warnings at them) and there's Peebee in clothing with exposed skin and that stupid breather mask. It's immersion breaking. When developers do this, they're putting their ideas of what's "sexy" and appealing over any sense of verisimilitude and logic in the world they're presenting. Far too often sexy just means revealing, and there are plenty of ways to make clothing sexy / attractive without making them so revealing that they break world lore. ETA: ME2 was the first time I ever bought alternate appearance packs for a game. They helped to make the game make a little more sense.

Nope. Far too often sexy just means revealing, and there are plenty of ways to make clothing sexy / attractive without making them so revealing. Actually I think it's just the iconic look vs practicality. It's an old RPG thing going back a long time...even on tabletops and the like. Games like Final Fantasy have been doing it for years, giving you a specific look and making the equipment more tangential to their stats vs their appearance.

It's funny seeing the high heel debate come up here when it went on for pages on the CDPR forum. The real reason is simple: artistic license. The shoes may be riding shoes but they're not the least bit practical for a sword fighter. I personally think they're a bit silly and they should have also made Ciri a Witcher outfit when she got to Kher Morhen. It's like Triss' hair. People bitched in every game it was too red, and CDPR just made it redder and redder till she looks like a flame head in TW3.

"Iconic", cosplay, etc. These things could be satisfied with base outfits - they could still wear protective gear when they go out in the field. Some characters (Garrus, Tali, krogan) have base outfits that are armor - if they designed all of the characters that way, they wouldn't need to provide a separate base outfit in addition to armor.

Yeah well, I think artistic license should be tempered by some modicum of realism in works that want to be taken seriously. In the case of the footwear, I mainly object because it's so unnecessary. Nobody looks any less beautiful for having semi-realistic heels. Hair isn't so much of a problem because (1) it can be dyed, (2) it doesn't affect functionality - I'd only complain if a warrior had very long open hair in melee combat.

Far too often sexy just means revealing, and there are plenty of ways to make clothing sexy / attractive without making them so revealing that they break world lore. I agree that ME2 ditched the more realistic geeky sci-fi art style of ME1 for over the top coolness and a more sexy look for the ladies. I was not particularly thrilled about that at first. Then again most ME1 armors were butt-ugly and boring. ME3 was a better compromise between iconic and sensible. It doesn't really bother me, certainly doesn't keep me from enjoying a game. Bioware could however easily solve this "issue" by offering more squadmate customization. I thought DAI was perfect in that respect. Companions had an iconic look but you could dress them as you pleased. The more iconic characters are, the more memorable and enjoyable they are to most people. Just look at how many people say Kaidan and Ashley and pretty much every other regular human character is boring. I believe it's not just their personalities. It's their non-iconic look a well. They didn't even have their own armor in ME1. Jack's clothes match her personality. Agreed though that they could have given her a different combat armor. People like exotic and they like sexy. I know not everyone does. That's fine. I don't like anime style mods in Skyrim either because I find it immersion-breaking for the setting. So there you have it. Since both Mass Effect and the witcher series feature lots of impractical clothes, hell, pretty much all games do, I don't find it THAT immersion breaking. I know it's not consistent with the laws of physics even within the fictional world, but as long as it's all part of the same dress/art style, it's fine by me. If that's making any sense?

Bah, screw all you prudes revolting at the audacity of a female video game character wearing high heels, and how dare she leave those elbows uncovered! I'm off to play a round of Lollipop Chainsaw while I thumb my nose at your sense of realism!

Bit of a strawman? No one here is saying this because we are prudes, it is about immersion. The more the game reminds me that is in fact a game is not a good thing, in my opinion. I don't care how characters look in game. If they want to design a woman with big breast and skimpy armour then thats their choice, more power to them. I will however use my right to say that i don't think its very immersive, and doesn't add to the world, only detracts from it. My enjoyment of TW3 hasn't gone down because of the design of Ciri, but i think there was an option to actually add some armour to her in the form of her alternate outfit, but no they went with something even less practical. Even if Ciri is incredibly powerful, a sword could cut her down like any other. Not wearing armour is silly. Lets discuss this forever! Outfit number 1, the one of the far left. Looks feminine and sexy, but is practical.

So a woman in high heels or not wearing a full suit of heavy plated armor pull you out of your suspension of disbelief but shooting fire from your hands, battling werewolves with a sword made of silver, and being a mutated human with fantastical Witcher abilities don't? I dunno, if I can suspend my disbelief to the point I am fully engrossed in slaying Wyverns and strigas while coating myself in magical exploding shields and drinking potions to instantly heal all my injures after being slashed repeatedly with a sword I don't see how something as innocuous as a pair of heeled boots or wearing leather armor is suddenly going to be "ZOMG that is just going too far!!!!". I suppose everyone is different but that seems silly to the point I find it hard to believe that immersion is the real complaint here.

Then again most ME1 armors were butt-ugly and boring. ME3 was a better compromise between iconic and sensible. I thought ME1 armors were okay. The human armors were form-fitting and had thin (space-age materials) plating to reinforce where needed. Shepard's armor got a lot heavier post ME1, though they did make sure to present boob sculptures on FemShep's chest. Yes, DAI did well with that - though I still find it odd that the exact same piece of gear looks entirely different on different followers. In DAI's case, each follower was a different body model / class combination - so, for the most part, they just applied some minor tweaks or recoloring to the 2-3 armor models they had for each, and sold it as iconic individuation of the followers. The problem with Kaidan and Ashley is that only one of them survives Virmire, so they both have the same arc for the rest of the trilogy. When I think of them in ME1, I see Ashley in the Phoenix set, and Kaidan in the set he wore at the beginning. Those are iconic looks to me. Other human followers have unique appearances and they aren't all considered boring. Miranda, Jack, Zaeed, Kasumi, etc. all have their share of fans. But, yeah - I don't much care what they do with a character's base "iconic" outfit, so long as they also use fully protective armor and helmet on them when we take them out on missions. If they're not going to spend the resources to create an additional armor for a character, then they should make their base outfit look like armor and slap a helmet (not a breather mask) on it for fieldwork. You're completely entitled to your POV about it - as is everyone else. But just as you find anime in Skyrim immersion-breaking, I find breather masks and certain ME2 outfits to be likewise.

I suppose everyone is different but that seems silly to the point I find it hard to believe that immersion is the real complaint here. Since every fantasy has its roots in reality it doesn't take that much for me to immerse myself in the world and believe that those things could exist. After all most of The Witcher 3 is based on slavic myth. Its when a design stands out like a sore thumb and breaks with the design of the world that immersion truly breaks. Also the reasons you list for my immersion breaking is just more of a reason for a person in that world to wear full armour in frontline combat. Is there any other woman in TW3 who is a frontline fighter that is dressed like that? Cerys wears a full get up, and she looks great. Rosa Var Attre which you help with fencing lessons also wears a full armour, and again she looks great. Why is it that Ciri don't wear armour and have high heels? The armour i showed in the fan art could have been as sexy, as iconic and pratical all in one package. Missed oppurtunity. Again like i said it hasn't ruined my enjoyment of TW3 and i don't have an agenda. Immersion is the most important thing to me when it comes to gaming, that is my only battle here. Still there isn't much more to be said on this "issue". Have fun with your gaming, and take care.
