If you think about it, 100,000 people a gazillion miles from home are at a serious disadvantage. Thats no more people than a small cities' population.
Also considering only a fraction of them have any combat training, they were lucky to survive since they immediately met a hostile race that could be millions or billions strong.

The “magic number” of people needed to create a viable population for multi-generational space travel has been calculated by researchers. It is about the size of a small village – 160. But with some social engineering it might even be possible to halve this to 80. This is from : www.newscientist.com/article/dn1936-magic-number-for-space-pioneers-calculated/So perhaps 20K humans plus what was on the Citadel isn't too bad. Also Ryder can keep on killing those outlaws since I guess we don't really need them. With Gene Therapy etc. in the future we may not need as many people. Plus no one has said : There are 20K people in the ark, but are there also donated sperm and egg of human and other species? Seeds etc?

How many were on the Nexus? The arks hold 20k but the Nexus seems like it held just as many with all of the attempts at survival and colonizing (although it's clear that most are still in Cryo on the Nexus).
The main thing that gives me pause with the Milky Way population is that there are a lot of us killing each other. Outlaws, Nexus, Exiles, the Collective, etc....That's a lot of death going around casually with a "majority" (i.e. at least 50%) of people still in Cryo. At best, that's 50,000 people out in Andromeda and it's hinted that thousands have already died.
I think Bioware was a little too liberal with the numbers when it comes to the whole "lots of people are dying & struggling to survive" narrative.

Am I the only one who thinks one of the problems with this game is too many people? There's what 800,000 on the 4 arks (though not all survive) and who knows how many on the Nexus. Just about everybody has their favorite race from the Milky Way represented. I would have rather had 2 or maybe 3 new races from the Helios Cluster rather than have 'old home' week on every planet with Raiders and Outcasts. I disagree - not fully (a few more new races would have been great, especially if there were no main enemy...I'd have loved to have a diverse political landscape that you have to navigate instead of one all encompassing big bad!), but partially: I like that they didn't want to "throw away" any of the existing races (except for those that haven't left their planet yet) - hell, I still have hopes for the GETH I don't like that they made one of my faves (the Quarians!) DLC (they haven't said so yet, but IMHO that transmission from the Quarian Ark is DLC baiting!) and nearly wiped the Turians out (they aren't likely to recover any time soon with so many lost on their Ark! The Asari could have taken such losses easier because of their longevity and way of procreation!) Also: Not 800K, it's 80K (20K per Ark and a few on the Nexus!) greetings LAX ps: As a lover of lore I like that they added more to the lore of the existing races (with new ones it sadly is a start from scrap - the existing races already have a rich lore after all...not that, as I have already stated, some more new races wouldn't have done the game some good!)

I don't know if you read the book, but almost, if not all, were released from cryo during the uprising. We know the Ark cryo population as that's mentioned in several places in the game. But was a number given or hinted at in the book for the Nexus? Or how many lost on arrival? It's a much larger ship, so it's feasible that it carried a much larger cryo population. However, the Nexus was only partially completed; at no point in the story do I get a sense that there's a lot of people still aboard. Sorry. I meant the krogan. Most people on the Nexus were still in cryo. You're correct there. It's because there aren't enough resources to support them and only people who were able to work to provide those resources were thawed. A bit more with each colony, but it's still not at a level to support all the people on the arks and Nexus yet.
