While watching Star Trek: TNG tonight, I realized that part of why I love the show so much is that very few of the confrontations Picard and the crew get in to are solved with combat. There is some, for sure, but it is almost always used as a last resort.
Don't get me wrong. I love the combat of MEA. The jump-pack makes things very fast and fun, and it's very well done. However, I would like it if it weren't always the only option. In ME1 there were several instances where, if you played your cards right, combat wasn't necessary. The first part of the final fight with Saren, for instance. Also, when entering the biotic compound with Father Kyle, I believe. There were a few others IIRC.
At any rate, I don't want future Mass Effects to be stealth games where like Dishonored or MGSV where combat can be avoided totally, because I do believe that no matter how you roleplay there are some instances where it will be necessary. However, it would be great if there were, in more instances, cases where wits and imagination can help solve a problem rather than combat. Combat can still be an option, for sure, but I think ingenuity in solutions would be very welcome.

I could...actually agree with that. More options for less combat should definitely be an option.

I was actually surprised by the number of quests where you did not have to fire a single shot or had limited combat. But yes. I'd be open to seeing what they come up with

Yeah I really liked those little side missions in ME1 where you were able to potentially resolve certain issues peacefully. I would have also liked an instance where a mission can test our patience where we might be really tempted to just kill an NPC but we can still play along and take an alternate route. UNC: The Negotiation comes to mind. I always kill that goddamn Warlord, because screw him and his loud mouth, but it's fun in that there's different ways that mission can go down.

I guess not every thing needs to be settled with guns and a lot of stuff in MEA was resolved without violence. But,I say let Star Trek be Star Trek and Mass Effect be Mass Effect. The flustercluck that was the ending of Mass Effect 3 should show you they should not write beyond their skill sets. Maybe it was how rushed the ending was and that they really couldn't show their vision in a proper way, but I still say it was beyond their talent in a scientific, coherent and most importantly a some what believable way. Or maybe I'm looking too deep and making a mountain out of a mole hill

Funny you bring up Star Trek because I was thinking to myself earlier that overall the Mass Effect games have done a better job of delivering a Star Trek like experience in a video game than any Star Trek games have.

TNG's way of doing things isn't really in tune with bioware's target demographic though. People want to shoot kett in the face not ask questions about the meaning of life. Also considering the writing we had to ignore in andromeda to enjoy the game, I don't think the writing team would be up for that kind of thing.

I'm still in my first playthrough and I'm pretty sure I had several situations where I could go with violent route. I don't feel any difference between ME:A and trilogy. Well, besides the need of paragon/renegade points.

I agree, but I'm also biased because TNG and Picard are my favorite Trek series and captain, respectively. In ME:A, diplomatic, peaceful solutions are even more vital than they were in TNG. If things go belly-up we can't call for support from our home planets. We don't have a fleet of warships we can call upon to intimidate our enemies. We only have the Nexus and our allies. ME:A is pretty much in the same position Voyager was in the Star Trek universe. Voyager had an incredible potential for storytelling and lore-expanding, complex relationships with new species. Unfortunately, they opted to forgo that in favor of telling the "riveting" holodeck stories, destroying everything that made the Borg interesting (to be fair, TNG kept beating Borgs' collective dead corpse for a looong time, too), and a trigger-happy idiot Janeway behaving like she had Star Fleet and Federation right around the corner with an inexhaustible supply of redshirts and spare parts, ugh.

Oh agreed, the Andromeda Initiative is very much in the same position as Voyager. In fact, before the game came out and we didn't really know a lot about it, I had posted about how MEA would be more like Star Trek because, like Voyager, they had very limited resources and should depend more on diplomacy (though I agree Voyager must have had a cloning facility for the number of people they went through). I love the game and very much enjoy playing it, but I was hoping for a little more in diplomatic situations.

I would want it to be clever, if implemented. With real options to solve the problems in unique ways. I would also want it to me more like the original Star Trek. Emotional McCoy, logical Spock, go-with-ur-gut and bang the hotties Kirk, stabbity-stab them Sulu, or the ship-comes-first Scotty. Which path will you choose? I would also want Janeway type options as well. The "I am smarter than you all and I don't give up" option!

Yes. More storyline involving the Holo deck trying to murder everyone.
Not the biggest fan of the next generation. Deep Space Nine was better. Babylon 5 even better.

Funny you bring up Star Trek because I was thinking to myself earlier that overall the Mass Effect games have done a better job of delivering a Star Trek like experience in a video game than any Star Trek games have. Interplay was Bioware's old publisher and I don't know if you liked these games, but after playing these... when Bioware came out with Mass Effect, I knew they would get it right. Of course, publishers changed, writers changed, whole studio changed, but yeah... I'll take one crappy Andromeda over anything... ANYTHING... from the Star Trek universe.
