Yeah, I'd play the hell out of a Bioware game without romances. I usually don't do romances in my 'canon' playthroughs, and a significant amount of my alternate playthroughs.
Buuuuuut part of what I very huggy much love about Bioware games is relationships. Not romantic ones, but if I was missing the chance to make my entire team figurative BFF bracelets, I'd be sad. The relationships between the squad and between the squad and the protagonist are part of what makes these games special for me. And I like the romances in principle (not always in practice -- insert gifts and get an awkward underwear rolling scene) because they're good for replay value and roleplaying another aspect of your protagonist.
So yes, but if I can't make spacefriendos, I'm taking my ball and going home.

Tbh, If I could go back, I'm not really sure I'd buy this game again. No romance would turn me off even further.

It depends, for me. I like the romances because they give me another avenue for roleplaying my character, getting into their head, and developing their relationships with their crew. I don't play romances for the sex scenes. For all I care, they could replace all the sex scenes with fade-to-black, but include deeper relationship-building content with the LI instead.
As long as they replaced the axed romance content with deep relationship-building between PC and squad, then I would still give the game a try. But if they axed romance and didn't replace it with anything...then probably not.

Nice! And great. I mean that you got a game (I don't know if you enjoyed it but nonetheless). Meminds me a bit of my last mothersday gift from my son - Dark Souls 3. Very funny combat system and I enjoyed it a lot for a while - but sadly no romance at all... About the Lhoghain choice: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! That is the greatest thing ever!!

I played KOTOR and Jade Empire without ever realizing that there were romances in them, and while I always say I don't have "canon" playthroughs, I do consider my best run on ME1 to be the one where Shep doesn't romance anyone (I thought they all seemed unprofessional from a character perspective in that game).
That said, I've found the romances since DAO and ME2 to be an interesting exercise in character development. In DA2 especially, I found that the unique character information that you got from the romances added to the replayability of the game as a whole. Of course, I didn't think most of the romances in MEA were very well done, so losing them wouldn't be a big loss. But I do think that when they're done well they do add to the overall atmosphere of the game in an interesting way that does give some extra replay value, so I'd miss seeing that (unless they were able to replace it with some other choice-based character development for NPCs).

Its kind of gotten too important if you ask me... I remember in Kotor it felt like an easter egg kinda thing.. was funny.. but to be that focused on it in an action/adventure/ rpg video game.?

Yeah, that caught your attention. Please answer honestly. Interesting topic from someone with Donk in their neame Eh? "Donk" has been my BSN handle/identity/whatever for a few years now. And yeah, without a doubt those that know of me will be sitting here wondering if I'm trolling or pulling the piss -- while that is tempting, I'm not. I'm curious to see how much of a selling point the romance mechanics are to these games, and judging by the responses, it's pretty important to the fans. Kinda makes me wonder why BioWare haven't capitalized on it and made a game that is dating simulator specific. As for my own opinion: it wouldn't stop me from playing. However, if they keep giving us open worlds with boring quests, I'm more likely to stop on that alone. I can understand how the whole romance/friendship building mechanics can be a "relief" to players who are fed up with playing fetch.

I'd absolutely play without romances. I do so about half the time. Even when they're well done, they only add a tiny bit of story. They can, and often do, help develop the characters a bit more. Still, there are other ways to do the same.
I don't think the romance arcs are bad, in and of themselves. I think the BSN obsession with them is weird, and that BioWare's fan service to these fans has been somewhat detrimental to the series. ME specifically has been negatively impacted; while DA has never seemed to derail or throw out logic for the sake of romance. I don't mind DA's approach to romance arcs at all. ME is too ready to embrace the improbable and absurd, for my tastes. ME would benefit from a reduction in romance arcs, and a focus on better story development, before reincorporating them.
People cite Solas as an example of the positives of the romance arcs. The problem is that Solas' arc is unique. While it adds an incredible depth to DAI's plot, there is nothing like Solas + Lavellan in any other game. That pairing stands head and shoulders above all others, in terms of impact and importance to the plot.
For the tl/dr crowd, I voted "Yes".

A dating sim seems like such a different animal to what BioWare actually offers. Like, part of what makes them fun is how they exist within the context of the rest of the game. Like, look at the scenes in LotSB if you romanced Liara in ME1. Having it live in an action adventure story is a lot better than it just being some dating thingie where your character is just exchanging romantic dialogue the entire time. I think it keeps a good balance that it remain the minority content in the entirety of the game.

I think it keeps a good balance that it remain the minority content in the entirety of the game. I've played a couple of dating sims that provide micro management and other "choices" to the game. It isn't just dialogue between two would-be lovers. Though the mechanics is designed to get you there, so to speak. BioWare could create a "Sims with story" type game where in between hitting up your dream dude/chick/whatever, you either work a job or play criminal (fetch quest in open world, anyone?) and in your other spare time you have to raise your stats like working out to keep in shape, etc. Tell me that wouldn't be an instant hit with the BioWare fanbase? Tell me you wouldn't play the shit out of that game xD And yeah, for the record I do like romance as a minor side content. I agree that's where it fits best, I guess my problem more or less stems from seeing meltdowns written on the subject. The game is deemed "shit" and I find it pretty ungrateful of them, tbh.

I certainly wouldn't buy it at release. Might pick up in bargain bin if they ditched romances. To me romances are a pretty important part of the immersion in the RPG experience. Trying to get into the head of a sterile character who can't engage in something so fundamentally human is far less rewarding.

I voted no, not because I wouldn't play the game but because I think that BioWare would loose a piece of what's special about their games without them. Many games have romantic subplots but BioWare games are the among the only games were I get to play as a female protagonist and have a romantic subplot.
Think of all the major female protagonists and none of them ever have any relationship but their male counterparts do. There are over 20 Lara Croft games and she has never had a boyfriend/girlfriend, but Nathan Drake has two in just four games.
This many not seem like a big deal to many people and that is fine, but romance is part of the human condition and it's something that people enjoy, that is why even super action films tend to have some sort of romantic subplot but it is a rare thing in games in general and even rarer in a game where I can play as someone like me.

Would I play/love a BW game if there would be no romance in it? Good question. At first impulse I would have said "yes" but then I started thinking... My very first experience with a BW game was NWN and I was so surprised when I learned that I can "romance" an NPC. It was "wow, now that's nice. Makes the whole thing more "personal" than just slaying some pixels and save the pixel world". So no, I wouldn't. Because it is a feature (as someone called it) that I love in every BW game. You can call it "romance" or "deep friendship", it doesn't matter. And it also woulnd't matter if there wouldn't be these extra candies like our "hot scenes". I even would prefer no eyecandie scenes at all because then nobody would complain (like me for example) that some get the better cinematics while others have to live with cuddling a fully armored Garrus or a "lovely headbutt". Or like in MEA a fade to black with Liam or Suvi while others have a full cinematic with Cora, Peebee or Jaarl. Either equality or no extras. But no romance at all? No. Am I happy with it? No. It needs to be more "natural". It has become too mechanical. The moment I get my "hot romance scene" I know the great showdown is knocking at my door. But it is a nice "feature" and no matter that it has some flaws, I love it. And I use the feature for my chars. And I don't care for any "trophies" - if I don't see a "romance" fitting for my char I don't do it. Or if I think of any the love interests as not fitting or interesting for my char I don't do it at all. But it's nice to know that I could if I would want to. To see that there is someone who is interested in my char other than "She/he is a hero because she/he has slaughter so much bad guys". Because that's part of role playing, too. And I'm thankfull that BW included it in their games. It makes my char more "real". It's part of them like a Creation Kit is part of Bethesda. Would I play/love a Beth game when there would be no CK? Certainly not.

I voted no. Do I solely play them for romances? Definitely not, I'm not that shallow.. yet. Why would I choose not to buy if Bioware's games didn't have this side-fluff in the games? Because my gaming attention is limited, I need something from a studio to draw me away from my usual games. for Bioware's games: that's romancing a companion IF I want to. I have nothing against the rest of the game, usually find everything that isn't romance/companion based in Bioware's games very much enjoyable as well, or I wouldn't play them at all obviously, not here solely for romances. I already have an extensive game library to choose from (meaning literally hundreds of games I can pick to play instead). So ditching romances, or even just ability to build a close friendship between protagonist character and companions, removes my main draw to these games which I would usually not be interested in at all otherwise, due to having too many enjoyable games to play already. So yes, the romance addition in any new Bioware game is a major draw to get me to buy their game, instead of some other studio's one. I'm also only here because Donk made this poll thread, and I miss Donk. *crawls back into hiding* *unholy shriek* AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Strange, I thought you two were more like THIS s12.postimg.org/vq002vd25/cats_sex.gifBut to answer the OP's question, I say this: how is it any different than what we have now, considering how much romance sucks in ME anyway? I'm gay and gay romances are a complete joke. Andromeda is the worst. So I don't romance anyone anyway.

Now I don't play games just for the ability to have a fling, have sex with all the crew etc but one of the most compelling aspects of Bioware games is the way they allow you to know your crew, friends etc and expand on those relationships. Plus Bioware is the only company AFAIK brave enough to include characters of all genders and sexual identities. So no I wouldn't.

Will play without the romance tracks, providing there are characters I can fall in love with and with enough content, like in KOTOR2 and Awakening. If a game is just focusing on the PC, then I won't play.

It is fundamental ingredient of human existance. Without it role-playing seems lacking. Imho. I have crgpgs that don't include the romance arc but they tend to not be played as much.

That is the greatest thing ever!! Well, I really enjoyed the whole combat stuff, was funny as hell. Never died so often in a game before. And it was the very first time I was mad as hell about a game but also extremely eager to beat it. The very first time ever I throwed my controller away in rage and just because of a boss fight... my kids teasing me for that ever since... got a pillow from them that looks like a controller - just in case...
