Aside from asari who have vaguely human faces and breasts, I don't see how straight or gay applies to other alien races. For example, other than being male or female do races like turians or salarians attract humans the same way as other humans? I mean I'm gay in real life but even if Scott is gay I don't see much of a difference between a male and female turian. My point being that even though my Scott is gay, he may still get with Vetra

Female turians look pretty feminine to me, even in the face. They are pretty distinct from the males. And as mentioned, they still have boobs. If you are turned off by human boobs, then you will probably also be turned off by turian boobs.

Ok but they don't look human. Maybe others have them too? Haven't really looked.
Anyway, my point was about being physically attracted to someone. Would a gay human male be more physically attracted to a male turian or salarian just because they're male too? Again my opinion but I don't see it

I think some of it's the voice. Most gay men I know aren't going to be attracted to a character voiced by a woman even if the character looks visually ambiguous in gender.

Would a gay human male be more physically attracted to a male turian or salarian just because they're male too? Again my opinion but I don't see it Well, under Nyreen's clothing up there, maybe her boobs look nothing like human ones. We can't know since we don't know what a naked turian looks like. But with the clothes on, they look exactly like human female boobs. Would you, a gay human male, be attracted to that chest? Or would it be another turn-off on top of everything else alien about her? Do you, as a gay male, find Garrus's voice to be more attractive than Vetra's? What about the type of sexual organs they might each have? (I can't believe I just typed that. ) I do see what you're saying, it's just difficult to answer since none of us actually consider these aliens to be sexually attractive. I think if we'd grown up to consider it normal to develop relationships with other sapient species, then we would pick up on the feminine traits of the females and masculine traits of the males, and those traits would attract or repel us accordingly.

Garrus has a handsome face and a really attractive voice, and probably still has a dick down there. Vetra however has more feminine curves and a woman's voice in addition to the beef curtains bewteen her legs.
Krogan male and female pretty much have the same body but the women's faces are softer and their voices are a complete turn-off. Also, the males are still the ones with a dick. And a quad.

This is why I stay away from the whole 'What am I and what are you' debate.
It never actually stops anywhere. Eventually you end up in a weird place where you have to reduce everything to an acceptable non offensive name tag, after you've justified sexual preferences discussed of course.
Its sex, human. Call it sex and have sex.

Don't really know. I don't process my sexuality in the sense of "that's the gender I like so I'll go for it". It's more like, "that one looks/acts/talks interesting". Yeah, it still mostly comes down to one gender but I don't think about it. I just react (even if only internally) to it. We'd have to first have extraterrestrials in our lives before we can really figure this out.

..I mean, I imagine if Mass Effect aliens were real, that'd be a bigger hurdle then gender. But hell if I know, because while our ancestors probably played footsie with other hominids (which is still closer than aliens for obvious reasons -- I mean, on a technical level, even making time with a sea cucumber is still less dramatic than making time with a quarian since the sea cucumber is more humanlike), our modern experience doesn't really have an analogue for a sentient species that isn't our personal species... Let alone how we'd make out with them, if at all. Add to that that their voices are probably all filtered through our universal translator or something, and hell if I know.
Since this is the fiction-y world of science fiction, most aliens seem to fall neatly into our general bauplan and gender divisions, which makes it easy for them who love ladies to love asari and so on. I guess I'd go with "Maybe, if we ever got some really strange aliens, who were for some reason a romance." But when they fall neatly into earth genders with human voices (again, for the obvious reasons of fiction), it's not surprising people tend to stick with their preferences.
...Except with turians, because Garrus has dat voice and Vetra is super tall and that's fantastic.

Well every alien species except the Asari and the Hanar use the same sex/gender classification as humans, so yeah, it does mean something.
You could argue that aliens IRL would likely have a completely different conception of sex and gender compared to humans, but BioWare wrote them to be "human" enough to be attractive to a decent chunk of people, and that means having recognisable sexual characteristics.

I know but I was just thinking about attraction. For me at least that starts with the face. So maybe I would be more attracted to a female than a male because of that. Or vice versa

Just because a race has male/female sexes and sexual dimorphism does not mean the divide has to occur the same way. Didn't the ME2 Garrus romance have some comments about that? Frankly even though Mass Effect has moved firmly into 100% Rubber Forehead Aliens and dropped all pretense to anything else, I still think it was a mistake moving to full on sexual encounters with aliens outside the token space babe race. But since the cat's out of the bag, OP's post got me thinking. What if we had a androgynous hermaphroditic race whose voice was also indeterminate in terms of male or female? If it didn't weird people out, I think that'd be the ultimate in "fair banging for all".

Since the aliens are so humanoid it does.
On the other hand if most aliens looked more like Geth and Hanar? Not so much.

Frankly even though Mass Effect has moved firmly into 100% Rubber Forehead Aliens and dropped all pretense to anything else, I still think it was a mistake moving to full on sexual encounters with aliens outside the token space babe race. Which is why I'm glad that when it comes to, at least, some of the alien races, the scenes remain fade to black. I know it may be an unpopular opinion but I was always relieved that the scene with characters like Garrus, Tali and Thane were all fade to black for the most part. I love having alien romances but I don't want the races to suddenly become physically compatible with humans because of said romances. It's not as if this would mean the relationship is necessarily non-sexual: there exist plenty of other ways to pleasure a partner without genitalia contact. But since the cat's out of the bag, OP's post got me thinking. What if we had a androgynous hermaphroditic race whose voice was also indeterminate in terms of male or female? If it didn't weird people out, I think that'd be the ultimate in "fair banging for all". I'd like that: having a race that actually is what they kept half-heartedly trying to present the asari as being even back in the OT. It could be very interesting provided it's thought through and done well.

Female turians look pretty feminine to me, even in the face. They are pretty distinct from the males. And as mentioned, they still have boobs. If you are turned off by human boobs, then you will probably also be turned off by turian boobs. I just had this image of a female turian undressing and revealing their boobs are actually mini dicks. I think some of it's the voice. Most gay men I know aren't going to be attracted to a character voiced by a woman even if the character looks visually ambiguous in gender. Good point. Hey, OP, have you played DAI? There's a woman that, uh... Well, this'll get awkward one way or another, but yeah, woman who feels dresses all that jazz like a man. Maaaaaybe go for trying this theory on there. I have played DAI. I guess my point was that we don't really know what kind of "parts" these aliens have. Just because someone is straight or gay doesn't automatically mean they'll go for the same when it comes to salarians or krogan

I don't know, does it matter? That's kind of what I initially thought was interesting about the alien romances, back when they added Tali and Garrus. Questions like, could you fall in love with someone based on their personality, even if you didn't know what they looked like, or if they looked very different from you, or even if that relationship could be risky. The Garrus romance in ME2 played with this a bit, at first you're not sure what he thinks, or if it's just crazy, and then of course Tali wondering if it's worth the risk removing her suit. Liara with her much longer lifespan, etc.

It's hard to know really. Everyone's different in terms of the exact things they like sensually and emotionally, and a lot of things might come into attraction to other intelligent species that don't translate into the way we think about genders. We don't really have a point of reference for what asari do during sex, for example.
Anyway, you don't really know *exactly* what is going on with other species in terms of sexual intercourse. I look at it this way: romance characters you and/or your characters like, and just headcanon that it's 'working' in the bedroom.
